Finally have a chance to sit down and type my story.

I wore lolita to an amusement park today.

Things were going pretty nice, no one was acting nasty towards me. Got called a princess for the first time ever and a second and third time later on.

Halfway through the day we took a break and a group of teenage girls sat next to us. I had this feeling they were talking about me, as I overheard something like:

"Then she walks onto the schoolyard like this" and they started prancing and doing silly princessy stuff in a really mocking way. After a while they stood almost in front of us heckling and pointing and making remarks. My protective/aggressive sister yelled something back at them and they walked away in shame.

Nothing too bad, still made me feel bad. But things got worse. While standing in line for a ride a few ladies behind us started saying nasty stuff about me (according to my sister and later on about her too). One of their kids kicked me. My sis almost exploded.

My little sister wanted to put on some pants because it was getting cold. While my older sister helped her, I saw a few people closing in. This one guy walked by and I heard spitting sounds.

I really wanted to go home then, as someone spit on me. As soon as I came home I took a hot shower and put on some simple clothes. I don't think I'll be wearing lolita for a while.

Teenage girls always seem like the ones that make fun of different fashions the most.
Gurl, half of you look like you just rolled out of bed with your messy buns, Uggs, and Love Pink sweatpants and no one says anything to you. I wore this headband to the mall the other day and I heard some 14 year old say it looked like something out one of the Saw films. I don't even think she's seen any of those movies...

But don't let that stop you, Darling. There are so many people out there who will honestly admire your creativity and style. Just remember that you can wear the plainest of jeans or blandest of shirts and people will always judge you and always find something negative to point out. You're only going to have one life, might as well do and wear what you think is beautiful.

I remember flagging down a girl dressed in OTT sweet with some tasteful cybergoth elements for a picture at a con once. She actually looked pretty damn good, considering I hated both styles at the time.

I'm pretty sure the poor thing thought I was making fun of her, since she didn't say anything and just stood there with a half smile while I took the picture. Just last week, I was coming back from a cherry blossom festival with my friends, we went to get something to eat and while I was waiting for my food, this one black lady calls her children over so they could take a picture with me.
The girls look at me and they're like 'who is that?' clearly not interested--or so it seemed to me--but their Mother was telling them to come take a picture with me either way.
I didn't refuse or anything, but I do dislike it when parents try to use their kids as an excuse to get a picture of Lolitas.
After that, we were walking toward the train station and this lady with a stroller looks at me and asks me if she can take a picture of me with her baby. I stand next to the stroller and right as she was taking the picture, she was like 'a picture of the two babies!' (No bonnet required for that comment.)

Nothing terrible, just something to tell.

Last week saw someone dressed in lolita at my uni, they were doing a costume shoot at uni (my uni is AUB in the UK) but one girl was dressed wearing a bodyline skirt and I dunno what else as I was really busy. Yesterday I saw someone who looked like they were kinda wearing lolita... But they were really dressed victorian inspired with a huge amount of poof or they were ita cause their skirt was a bit short and their clothes looked a bit poor quality. I nearly got excited last week until I realised this girl who I thought was wearing rockinghorse shoes was actually just wearing wedges.. I did see about 2 weeks ago someone around the local area wearing the Chocolate Rosette salopette (not lolita but still a print) walking their dog, they looked cute!

If you're worried about resale value, you are too poor to be buying brand. If your long-term financial plan depends on you being able to re-sell an expensive piece of clothing, it is too expensive for you to be buying right now.

Plus, weed smoke is not as "sticky" as cigarette smoke, so to speak. Not trying to stir up a drug debate but it's very easy to eliminate the smell of marijuana from your clothes. So you could still wear your clothes to church or whatever you feel guilty about.

? pot smoke is not the same as cigarette smoke and there are things called Dry Cleaning/Freezing/Etc that completely remove the smell (specifically for cigarette smoke, freezing kills the odor causing bacteria). I know because I used to smoke in my brand, would do all of these things before selling, give to my non smoking friends and ask if it smelt like smoke, then sell without mentioning and never once received a complaint.

Man some of the stores I read about girls in public make me pretty happy to have not received such a horrible experience quite yet.
Don't get me wrong, the teasing and slandering and awkward stares do happen and I feel as though I am dwindling on the fine line between socially acceptable and downright wrong, but really all the negative attention only comes from wearing sweet lolita in public (as opposed to most of the more 'socially acceptable' responses I get in classic lolita).

I guess I could share just one story though to help out with some of the negative ones that are going to flood here :

I do not mean to sound so rude, anon. But perhaps you did not read my post thoroughly?
I had already suggested wearing sweet lolita was dwindling on the line between socially acceptable and not being socially acceptable.

I am not a sweet lolita by nature, more of a classic and gothic lolita. But I know when things are too outrageous to be worn on a day to day basis while carrying out daily routines so, I tend to treat myself in the fashion when eating at restaurants or going to special events with friends (like the movies), worn only at those times.

That and I was merely responding to prior posters and their own experiences.

Forgive me if I seemed like some 'delusional' person?

Okay so I don't usually get any major reactions outside of people quietly staring, laughing bitches (always teenage girls) and the occasiaon person that comes up to gush/take pictures.

The other however day I was waiting outside a shop for my friend in regular sweet with a short pink/brown wig. Some middleaged guy zeros in on me, rushes over and asks me if i'm german. I was worried at first he was coming to shout at me or something as he looked vaguely angry, so I burst out laughing, deny being German and ask him why he would think something like that. He wont tell me, so we proceed to stand there in the longest awkward silence ever before he holds out his hand like he wants to shake mine. I hold mine out and instead he strokes my hand and leaves.
It was so fucking bizarre.
I didn't know whether to laugh or wash my hand.

I've never worn lolita in public because I'm not a lolita, but I have people randomly meet me and tell me they've seen me around and they love my lolita clothes/style. I mean, I'm glad they are at least on the right track and are being nice, but the most lolita thing I own is tea party style shoes. A girl I'm friends with now was insisting I dress in lolita when I first met her, even though I was trying to say I don't own anything that's actually lolita. I just let it go because she's foreign and I didn't want to seem like a jerk.

So yeah, I don't know where you guys live that you get all this flack, but young people here seem to have a general idea of what it (or Japanese fashion, I guess) is. My outfits can get pretty ridiculous to a normie, but the worst I've had is someone laugh at my floral coat to her friend, who didn't laugh with her, and I'm not sure if she was even being mean. Lots of people just smile and run up to me and stuff because they think I'm cute, so it might have been along the same lines. Older people compliment me a lot too, and I've gotten "it's so nice to see a girl dressed like a lady" multiple times.

Despite everything that happened, I had a lot of positive reactions too and a great day. There were a few girls that wanted to know about a statue in the park. I politely explained them that you could buy special park coins there, as a souvenir. That's when they started gushing over my stuff, especially my circle lenses. I still feel kinda embarrassed about this even though it happened like 2-3 years ago..
I was at work when two lolitas came in. I was working at a Sanrio at the time and I had just started getting into lolita, and had just bought my first dress (off-brand from QTLand, like a fool). Two beautiful girls came in wearing AP. They bought a few things and I was trying to keep my cool as I was ringing them out, making small talk.

There are three Lolitas at my college. My college is a women's college near a co-ed school. Most people here wear normal clothes, a few try to be /fa/ (especially the /lgbt/ crowd), some are in gym clothes but usually dress pretty normally. There's a group of weirdos that cosplay every fucking day, and I mean, "make a cosplay out of what's in your cosplay" quality, even for cons.

There are other cosplayers but they keep it on the DL, have awesome cosplays at cons, and during the school year/off season/whatever you guys call it, are just normal.

My friends and I dress normally, even though we lurk /cgl/ and /fa/.

The three Lolitas:

1. Milanoo Lolita. She's also /lgbt/ and wears lots of random rainbow accessories. Not pastel rainbow, though, bright rainbow petticoats, toe socks, the whole nine yards. Her normal look is all black stuff from Hot Topic, mixed with whatever bright rainbow accessories she can find. Her Lolita stuff from Milanoo is really low quality. Back when I came to the college and met her, and she was looking for good stuff to buy, she found Milanoo and I mentioned I'd heard bad things about the site. She didn't care, got some really bad looking sateen monstrosities, and looks fucking terrible in Lolita, which she wears almost weekly. She's pretty ita and pretty annoying. She's convinced other people to try her Milanoo-tastic Lolita and yesterday, at a college party, a bunch of them were all wearing really shiny, ruffly Lolita dresses, even though for graduation, white plain cotton dresses are traditional, not Lolita.

2. Bodyline Hippie Lolita. She wears a bob with bangs and only wears circus-style prints. She wears a lot of Bodyline, owns no brand, and is an SJW. She's also annoying as fuck. Example, in the cafeteria, she'll knock into people with her petticoats instead of waiting for a crowd to disperse. She wears Lolita every day, everywhere, including to gym class. Somebody in her gym class told me she wears Doc Marten boots (the only kinds of shoes she wears, oxblood, whether or not dark red goes with the coord), bloomers, and a ruffle top to class. She also wears elements of Lolita to work, even though she's a lunch lady. She doesn't do ladylike stuff, ever, and yesterday, at the all-white cotton dresses event, she wore gray Lolita.

3. Good Lolita. She wears brand but doesn't brag about it (vs. Bodyline Lolita bragging about Bodyline), is ladylike, and very nice when people ask about her coords. She has normal friends and isn't a fucking weirdass. She wears a wig and makeup when she goes Lolita, which the other girls do not do.

And I guess, honorary mention goes to Slutty Lolita, my friend who owns a few Alice and the Pirates pieces but treats them badly. She's a fatty-chan and the pieces do not fit her but she doesn't want to lose the weight to fit in.

I'm too tall and busty (not a fatty chan though) to do Lolita.

So yeah I just went to jury duty in my Naked Snake cosplay. It was actually pretty uneventful. Took off my stabo harness and my belt of ammo pouches at security (I left the m1916 holster at home). Got a few stares during orientation, but no one talked to me. Was summoned to a trial which was about this guy who allegedly stuck his dick in his 6 year old daughter's mouth. Judge didn't fine me for contempt of court when I went to the jury box. Lawyers didn't ask me any questions and just excused me right away. Went outside to eat lunch and only got a few stares. Went back inside and spent the rest of the day reading A Storm of Swords. Overall, it was a pretty good day.

This, maybe it comes from living in the Bronx for too long, but someone willing to yell shit at you or talk about you in obviously loud levels is DYING for a fight. They are looking for an excuse to put their hands on you, and 1000 times out of 10 if it's not a group of notoriously skinny and uncoordinated white girls they ARE talking about you to their clique in the hopes you'll do something. Because it doesn't matter if you can take the shit talker, it matters if you can take 3 or 4 of them. You know how many people want to tear a pretty dress apart?

I have been to Japan twice once dressed mostly as a tourist and once mostly dressed as a lolita. I'm super white- blonde hair blue eyes white- so overall Japanese people will be nice and mostly kinda "Oh non-japanese person, you so silly not knowing things" as long as you make an effort to be respectful and polite and not loud and obnoxious- overall positive experiences.

That being said SO MANY more people were nice and went out of their way to talk to my friend and I when we were in lolita vs. touristy clothing. Shop-staff in lolita stores were more attentive even when we weren't wearing the brand of the store we were in. Random strangers would come up to us and help the poor confused Americans on the subway more frequently. It was overall a better experience in lolita than in more regular tourist clothing. That being said prepare for a ton of sneeky photos, odd looks, and sometimes comments (as a blonde I heard "Alice-Chan" a lot).

These were my experiences and mostly in Tokyo, others may have different ones.

I was harassed last year for walking to a convention in Homestuck cosplay by these drunk and smelly natives, after snickering and following me yelling "it's not Halloween" I don't give a shit what you cosplay it's not fucking okay to throw your disgusting used tissues onto me. That's not even the worst part, after I briefly told them to leave me alone, one of the guys calls me a bitch and dumps his soda on me, the three of them start laughing and walk away, I was fucking shocked and didn't know what to do except stand there, there's nothing a tiny girl like me could do anyway.

I got it all over my wig and face, most of the paint came off, it was my first con so I didn't think to bring any supplies (makeup, paint etc) so being halfway there i didnt think it would have been worth it to walk home and reapply my facepaint so I just cried home. Good thing it was only the first day of the con, also decided that my friend would drive me the next two days. what a horrible experience though.

One was wearing a very messy yoko wig paired with a long white dress and a shitty corset, and the others in their typical clothing but with wigs. They were squeeing over animu merchandises (all bootlegs, I was at Chinatown).

I mean, I told her to search for hellolace to find out where you could buy stuff, but trying to explain second hand sales or even just buying from brands sites seemed to really confuse her so I just stopped myself when I saw her trying to process the info.
