I know we Texasfags still have San Japan, but A-fest is a little less than a month away. No schedule yet, but the official panel list is up: https://animefest.org/e/AF2013/Programming/Panels

So A-fest general! What are you cosplaying? Are you making progress on it? Which panels look interesting? Etc.

>> No.7018459

I have to finish my costume for SJ before I can star on afest. Luckily for afest I'm only making one new one, and its a school uni, I can do that in a week (I hope)

>> No.7018561

I'm guessing it's another year without a band then?

I know Afest had a bitch of a time hotel wise this year. There is a massive Jesus Fest going on the same weekend. Largest in the US. Dallas was chosen as the location for this year, but they change cities each year. It's why all the hotels are sold out, especially any large suites.

still have no idea what to cosplay and scrounging for ideas, but looking forward to it all the same!

what trends do you expect to see the most of, aside from the obvious homestuck/superwholock/adventure time?
I'm thinking dangan ronpa and SNK, but I'm not too sure what the texas cosplay scene is like in that regard

Not making anything new for San Japan, however for Animefest, John Watson, Takashi Natsume (Natsume Yuujinchou/Book of Friends, which will be my new cosplay), and probably some form of Rin Kagamine.

Still have a ton to do on my Sakizou costume, but yeah, looking forward to AFest. Will probably only be there Friday night through Sunday night though. Sucks I'll miss getting to watch the walk-ons. I really hate how the walk-ons are on Friday night.

Unrelated to the Jesus thing in Dallas, but we had some Mormon camp take place at my university during the summer and they TRASHED the dorms. Carved "JESUS" into our cork boards, put deodorant all over the walls, wrote all over the furniture, etc. They were little terrors in the Caf, too. It was a small school out in the boonies, and usually in the summer we had like... 40 people living on campus. So you could set your bag down in the Caf to grab a seat and be fine. These little turds would move your bag and leave you with no where to sit in a room full of Mormons who just got their first dose of caffeine.

But so are we like sharing the hotel with the Jesus camp or is it just at another hotel downtown? Because this could get interesting really quick.

>>7018667

I think Titan is going to be the big one, but I'm curious to see if people do closet cosplay or shitty attempts or if most of it is legitimate attempts with 3DMG. I really wanted to cosplay Armin but knew I would not have time (and I blew my big cosplay budget with A-kon), so I'm going to save him for A-kon next year.

Is DR a big thing in cosplay? I know a few months back all the seagulls thought it would be this huge cancer and I just don't hear anyone talking about it. Did AoT just turn out to be better than we expected and overshadowed DR, or is DR just sucky and was never going to go anywhere? I haven't watched the anime, I just was really curious since at one point we all thought DR was the next thing.

I know this will probably get some shit, but I'm actually doing Nagisa from Free! So I'm interested to see if there are any other Free! cosplayers at A-fest.

Depending on when my panels are I'd like to compete as a walk on (resurrect my Holo) or do the Hall Contest. I'm leaning towards Hall Contest if it works out time wise with panels. I really wish we had a schedule because I have cosplays that go with panels and can't know what day I'm cosplaying what until we get a schedule.

>> No.7019025

I have no idea who I'll bring, other than Ladypool and maybe Rikku if I end up having time to find better orange fabric, make the belt, and buy a wig between studying my ass off and working towards more martial arts testings and stuff like that.
Since that's probably not going to happen, I guess I'll just bring Yoko like always.

I still notice a lot of Homestuck cosplayers on tumblr are also doing DR, but I can't wait to see all the SNK honestly. But I can admit I'm super jealous I couldn't do it for A-fest.

I only saw two YAOI panels so stop bitching about that.

And the shit list of panels seems to be due to the lack of panelists who want to do panels. I was watching the list of panels that were submitted. I don't know where the quality panelists are going, but it's not here this year. Even San Japan was hit pretty bad as far as panels/panelists go.

I would assume since Afest has no band, they had to fill in for time. They used to have a pretty strict anime/Japan theme only panel policy, but once again lack of panelists. They took what they could I would wager.

>> No.7034370

>>7034132

Thank you for pointing that out. I was looking at the list and scratching my head going, wtf Jebus you can't count worth a flip.

I think the panels are just like HALF cosplay Q&A which is the problem. And then like a good majority of the cosplay track panels are by one girl, so there isn't a lot of variety in terms of WHO'S hosting a panel either.

But here's the thing. If we want better panels we have to submit better panels. Not everyone is a public speaker, but the state of anime cons that cgl moans about (all these cancers) won't get better in terms of panels until people decide to DO something about it.

I couldn't figure out for the life of me why some panels were picked except that in the end A-fest seemed to approve 90% of the submissions, so it seemed pretty easy. The first round that got picked in June seemed to be more of what the con staff "REALLY" wanted, but who knows.

But I, too, though Afest used to be more pure in terms of programming. And now we have Brony panels all over the place, Homestuck, and a TON of Supernatural/Dr.Who/Sherlock combo stuff. Even a Harry Potter panel. I'm a bit disappointed since I was looking forward to A-fest being the ANIME con in town as opposed to A-kon. But in the end, there are still some panels I'm going to go to (shameless fujoshi).

tl;dr --> submit a panel next year if you hate the lineup, it's not that hard to get in

>> No.7034532

>>7034132
>>7034370

Excuse me that I thought more yaoi panels were on the list. But yes, I think that instead of doing what they did this year (have everyone vote on the panels on the website), they should go back to having the con staff select the panels. If you let bronies browse a panel voting page, of course all of the brony panels are going to get in, and that goes for every fanbase as well. One thing that is shocking to me though is that there are no Sailor Moon panels, even though they got Usagi and Makoto's english VA's, along with the english ADR director, to come to this con.

>> No.7034685

>>7034532

So you don't want the power in the people? A-fest actually allowed the congoers to have a direct say (though con staff had the final say) in what panels get put in the con by voting.

Panels are submitted based on what people want to submit. Maybe no Sailor Moon fans wanted to submit. Or maybe by the time they were announced people had already made plans. So the reason there are no Sailor Moon panels is because no one submitted any, dipshit. You also had to be registered to vote and could only vote for a panel once. So it's a lot harder to stack votes when you literally have to pay to vote.

If you don't want a ton of Brony panels, then next year submit a different panel or don't vote for them. But you must just have this complex against fanbases. Oh right, you do. In the A-kon thread you blamed the state of cons and all this cancer on girls. Which is probably why you knee jerk reacted to two yaoi panels and lost your mind because some fujoshis got some programming.

Stop complaining if you're not going to do anything to change the status quo. I for one was happy A-fest made the panel submissions and acceptance process a lot more transparent. If you'd rather give up your say in the submissions, that's fine, but just because you're butthurt over some Brony and yaoi panels doesn't mean we need to revert back to total staff control of the system.

I'm not even going to waste my time with typing alot about this because something along the lines of what I type next, you're going to turn around on me so fuck it. And sorry, but I like the "first come, first serve" type of panel selection. That's part of why San Japan has always been good about their panels. Also, I was simply acknowledging that yaoi panels got in this year. I rarely see those kind of panels get mentioned at all so seeing them surprised me.

What San Japan does though is start from who submitted first and if it sounds like something the staff thinks would be good for the con, they submit it through. I agree that they rarely submit non-japanese stuff through simply because they try to stay anime-related (one of the few anime-based cons left) and I like that the most about them.

>>7061430

It's really THE major player, so it is a bit frustrating, though in some ways I feel like the "hometown con(s)" for FUNimation really are just done because they're hometown cons. Not that they treat us poorly, but A-kon is a top 5 anime con based on attendance. Especially given that FUNimation at the movies hasn't been happening, I'd like to get more than just small announcements for once. Not asking for Otakon level stuff, just... a little love.

I remember someone asking about FUNimation at the movies at A-kon and they pretty much put the task on us fans to find a theater.

But it wouldn't surprise me if they boycotted given that it looks like A-fest has some fansubs they're showing. I got no problem if people want to watch that on their own, but I personally have a serious problem with any organization showing illegal anime--be it a con, public anime club, etc--showing fansubs (especially if the video rooms are a feature you need badges for, it's an even further ethical issue when it's something that requires paid admission. Use my money to legally bring in anime. Even though I know those are titles not licensed, that doesn't make it suddenly legal).

Showing fansubs at a con is like showing licensed anime without an okay from the rights holder. Then again, A-Kon did this plenty of times (ex. Seconding this >>7061893. A-Fest may be a small fry when it comes to copyright violation--it's certainly not the ones putting this stuff up--but that, or your assertion that it's a test of these laws doesn't at all make it okay.

Showing licensed anime without an okay from the rights holder is illegal too as it constitutes a "public performance" if the movie/show is shown outside your home. Anime clubs can get away with this because they are usually non-profit and small and it's not as great a legal concern.

FUNimation isn't going to go after some college anime club, even if they're pulling in 100+ people, for a viewing of a copy of one of their anime because while technically, yes, that is a public performance where the anime wasn't licensed for that viewing, they have bigger fish to fry, LIKE fansubs, illegal uploads of their dubs/shows, and such.

Again, it does get tricky when you consider that the shows A-fest is using fansubs for aren't licensed in the US. So the immediate concern of a distributor like FUNi or Sentai isn't there, but the Japanese distributor and license holder could take action.

But all of this legal talk really ignores what for me is the heart of the problem in that this is simply an unethical thing for an organization to do. ESPECIALLY when we as congoers pay into this "convention system" so to say, and our money goes in part to fund the general stuff we see at cons (video rooms, panels, guests, dealer's room, AA, gaming, etc). So we're paying to see illegal anime. I don't go to cons to see anime, I mean, we can all see it on our computers. But again, that doesn't erase the ethical (and legal) concerns that the practice raises.

And just because A-kon did it NEVER makes it okay.

>> No.7062007

>>7061984
the other major difference is that most anime clubs don't make profit, but an anime con does.

10 years ago anime was more obscure so the industry would turn a blind eye to fan subs as long as it wasn't licensed in the us. That shit doesn't fly now, and I wouldn't be surprised if afest gets some serious negative backlash for this

>> No.7062442

>> No.7062791

>>7062442

FUNimation has gone after individuals for uploading illegal anime. It's no different than when an individual is prosecuted for downloading music. Just because you are small fry doesn't mean you still can't be a target. Corporations will do anything to protect their licenses (anyone remember when Warner Brothers got super anal and tried to sue Harry Potter fanfic writers?).

Again, in this case it would be the Japanese distributor and I doubt they know, but certainly we as fans will notice (and I guess the only thing to do is complain to con staff, though eventually if it were a big problem not buying a badge would send the message) AND no doubt companies like FUNimation will notice and not want to take part if asked.

I agree with >>7062007. Given that a) legal anime is so prevalent nowadays you have to actively TRY to get illegal anime, b) A-fest requires a badge to see video, and badges cost, and c) they seem to generally have a better standing in the anime community here in DFW (as compared to A-kon). At the very least, yes, there will be fan backlash and for me it really tarnishes their image (more so than this non-anime paneling they approved this year).

Again, about the only things we can do are not showing up for the illegal video programming, complaining to staff, and putting our money where our mouth is if it continues (I don't want it to go that far).

Has anyone addressed this on their Facebook and Google+?

I wasn't saying it was okay, I was saying since A-Kon did back a couple of years ago, I wonder if Afest thought they could get away with it too, which clearly is not the case since they pretty much put it all over the schedule if you know your anime companies. I didn't know much about fansubs back when I first got into anime but now that I know enough about it, I would've spoken with somebody about showing them the first year I went which was A-Kon 21. Also, if you're charged to show copyrighted material somewhere (i'm not sure if you are, i'm saying for the sake of argument), then how much did Afest spend on the Miyazaki films and the movies like Epic and Dispecable Me?

And to top it off, I wonder if their guests of honor (the director and producer for GiTS and Eden of the East) even know about this. Almost everyone in Japan is concerned about illegal anime and I wonder if they would come back knowing they were at the same con that showed fansubs.

It doesn't matter if people care or not. When something is illegal, whether people "care" isn't taken into concern. I'm not the anon you're replying to, but I think in this case whatever "soap box" you perceive us to be on is actually fairly justified. We're asserting we disagree with an illegal (and unethical) practice. I think you're also making a sweeping generalization about youth at cons. The implication that cons think they can get away with this perhaps because there are so many kids at cons has a bit of truth to it, but is nonetheless troubling (but is just symptomatic of anime con culture today).

>>7063744

Then please tell me why I regularly see "Japanese man arrested for uploading X anime" on ANN. I don't doubt that the majority of the Japanese population isn't concerned with anime and that only a subset are. I also don't doubt that an American con showing illegal anime wouldn't ruffle feathers in Japan because they probably wouldn't know.

But A-fest isn't a small con, and it also has Japanese guests. Japanese licensors are most definitely concerned about protecting their assets. A-fest had the option to not show some of these titles, but they're on the schedule anyway.

I think a lot of you don't really understand that businesses only will pursue legal action and "go after" someone, only when they feel that the amount of money is justified. They aren't going to pursue something if they feel like the long term profit won't out weigh the amount they will spend on legal fees. The most they might do is send a C&D, but again, that would mean actually physically sending someone, which they aren't going to do.

Well, unless it's a FUNimation title that is being illegally shown (as in they didn't get proper permission to show it) FUNi won't care. And I think Disney and big Hollywood companies are the ones who are more likely going to be concerned with an illegal public showing.

Since in this issue we have 2 separate legal problems: a public showing without proper license (i.e. Brave) and showing illegal material (i.e. fansubs). Both are very different, but still all part of copyright stuff.

I don't see FUNimation on the vendors list for the DR, so it's possible they decided to skip this one and it's not at all related to the illegal shit. It might come up in the future, but at this point I can't guess that far ahead.

>>7064849

May not be new, but "we've done this before" doesn't fly as an excuse for illegal activity. 2007 was also a different time in anime (though arguably the turning point with US distributors and illegal content).

Regardless of legality, I still scratch my head and go WHY? Of all the legal anime out there, why pick something that is unlicensed. Not like we're hurting for licensed anime. Sorry if someone thinks it's a shame JoJo doesn't have a license, but keep it at home and in private. Don't put it out in a public forum.

But back on more of a con topic, cosplay is done except for my zipper on a jacket. Now panel powerpoints are another story...

Funimation and other companies won't do anything. Not worth the effort for such a small event. Hell, no one said or did anything about the badges at San Japan that had a a ton of licensed characters on them. Funimation was actually AT SJ and they didn't care.

>> No.7065806

>>7065463
The badges at san japan were original art in a very stylized rendition in original poses. There is much less of a claim there because of the 50% rule and on top of that the badges (from what I'm aware of) were all for staff, so technically you weren't paying for them.

Screening a film you do not have the license to screen is pretty much as cut and dry as you can get.

From the few I saw of the SJ staff, they weren't stylized, they were pretty obvious which characters they were. It was always my understanding that licensed characters on convention badges were a big no no regardless if they were paid for or not. SJ didn't pay for the license or get permission from companies to use the characters. Afest likely didn't get permission to show those movies.

Nothing is going to happen to either convention. They are too small fry to get in any sort of legal battle. Might get a C&D but it's very unlikely.

>> No.7066021

yes, googling sailor moon and using the first image you find is a no no. Having art that depicts what one might construe as sailor moon in a highly stylized art style is at best a grey area.

The various giant conventions like DragonCon or NYCC might get their attention mainly because of the media attention they get. While SJ has been growing, it still doesn't hold a candle to the major conventions elsewhere in the U.S.

When A-Kon used to show fansubs no one went after them either and they are a hell of a lot bigger than SJ. So yes, in the big world of nerd conventions SJ is a small fry.

>> No.7066464

>>7066216
What do you mean no on when after them? Funimation black listed them for years, it's why all they had was shitty authors and artist as guests that had nothing to do with anime, they literally could not book an voice actors.

Yeah, you don't seem to understand what makes a convention a big one, Dragon Con, SDCC, those are exceptions. Anything over 10k is certainly considered large and certainly worth the industries time.

>> No.7066503

>>7066464

Yes, though I think something like a SJ that pulls 10k is really at this point on the low end of a potential top 10, or just makes a top 20. It's a midsize con. Given how cons have grown, to hit the top 10 now you're looking at 12k or more. A-kon wasn't even in the top 5 in 2012 because Anime Boston has gotten so huge.

Just checked and SJ is actually #14 based off 2012 numbers. Anime Matsuri was #13. I think it says something that of the top 15 cons, we have a decent amount in Texas. I think the reason we DON'T see a FUNimation presence is that it's Dragon Con and something else. Can't remember, but I just saw the FUNimation post on my Facebook feed and A-fest is NOT listed as a con they are going to this weekend, despite them probably having the staff to do it.

And I'm guessing since they did A-kon this year they figured they had their fix of DFW cons? It was weird though. They were surprised when people asked about FUNimation at the movies (Asian chick was like, "So I guess we're getting this question because we're in Dallas?"), but then asked a very specific local question (Rojas asked who saw Wolf Children at the Dallas Film Fest).

>>7066216

The argument of X con did this doesn't apply. There isn't any rhyme or reasons as to which cons will get singled out (just as you never know who out of the millions of pirates will get arrested).

It's best to treat things like this as if they were serious. You don't even mention the word bomb or gun at events around police, especially since Boston. With both events there expect DPD to be out in full force. Something a lot of people don't realize is that most dogs you will see w/ LEOs are bomb sniffing dogs, not drug dogs.

There are police snipers, city EOD, and all sorts of things people never realize that go on at events. Now, probably not with afest. But, the other event seems pretty high profile and there are a LOT of people going to be around.

Generally speaking if you see something, say something.
No one cares about learning about different types of things that can be identified as threats so I won't go into it. Go ask night time /k/. But there are just some general safety things you should always think of no matter where you are. Failing to do so is just ignorance of the world you live in.

Well, thus far it has been an interesting con, and I think my highlight of Friday was seeing Greg Ayres bitch out Jebus for being an asshole in his panel, and then the conversation afterwards. Really looking forward to Greg's "Why Your Fandom Sucks" panel this afternoon.

Who won cosplay? I didn't make it to the show last night.

Also, word to the wise: saw a lot of cars getting booted last night. They are checking this stuff, so don't let your meter expire and make sure you park legally.

a code geass pair. The judging was very strange. Most of the costume I had pegged for high titles only got judges awards.

Also the people running the show were rude as fuck and didn't know what they were doing

Nobody there? Hilarious? Waiting two hours in line for registration on Saturday morning was the least hilarious time I've had at any con, period.

I don't know if more people came than they had anticipated, or they forgot everything they learned organization-wise last year.

But the rest of the day was pretty cool!

Had a great time (more relaxed than A-kon, not a huge con, but still a really fun time for my first A-fest). I think the highlight of my day (beyond running a panel) was running into Slutcliff's Free! group.

I'm sorry if I was a bit in Gou-mode I don't think I was fully prepared to see male Free! in the flesh. But it made for an awesome cosplay moment, I'm so glad to have found other Free! cosplayers. Thanks for the fun times!

They were. The pre-reg line was also the on-site credit card line. Only way you got a badge fast is if you were paying cash on site. They also were getting insane with badges to a point that they kicked out people of the fucking artist alley if they didn't have their badges on. In the dealers room I put my badge up because a lot of people kept wanting pictures, and in the middle of it we had this heavy set security member with a massive stick up his ass came up to me and said I had to leave because I didn't have my badge showing. I pulled it out and put it back on and he still kept trying to say I HAD to leave and come back in and "do it right". I told him I wasn't going to jump through ridiculous hoops and if he wanted to take my badge and kick me out because I put it up for photos, he could be the douchebag that did that. He huffed off and before he got the satisfaction of doing anything I left the dealers room and went to drink. This con has become too expensive for a 4 day con that has almost nothing going on with it and it's obvious by the dropping attendance numbers that I'm not the only one thinking that.

>> No.7078446

Someone got kicked out of the video rooms by a guy claiming his badge was a fraud and he was stealing from the con. The irony of this being said as we watched Disney movies that there's no way they paid for the rights to screen.

>> No.7078466

>>7078440

A similar thing happened to me. I put my badge in my pocket since some people wanted to take a few photos, then RIGHT AFTER this staff thing walks up to me and says I need to display it. I pull it out of my pocket and tell her I just put it away for those photos. Then she tells me I can put it away for photos, but I need to wear it otherwise. ...WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU THINK I WAS DOING?

But I mean, they check your badge to go in, why do they constantly need to check EVERYONE anyway?

>> No.7078467

>>7078440
well this is news to me, although admittedly something I was afraid of experiencing.
I usually don't bother with buying a badge if there aren't any panels I want/am able to see, since I've never had any trouble with wandering around without a badge on the convention floor itself. Have Animefest and the other Texas cons really become so strict about badges?

>> No.7078485

>>7078466
My friend was wearing a costume that didn't have any good place to tuck the badge out of sight, so she had it in her purse. We were accosted by a staff member who told us it must be "ON AND VISIBLE AT ALL TIMES" because there were stolen badges and they wanted everyone to be "safe." Safe from... people walking around who didn't pay for a badge?

>> No.7078489

Animefest has only recently really become bitchy about badges but I think they finally realized what most other cons know and don't care about because they can't stop it...there will be con-goers that don't buy badges or use other badges to get around. Most times I may not buy a badge because I really have nothing to do at a con. If the panel line up is shit, and the guests are bland, there's little reason to pay for a badge. The biggest problem is that this doesn't make those people pay...they either won't go or they'll continue skirting the system, and the people that deal with the stupidity are the legitimate con goers that buy badges. Just add it to the list of things they do that benefit no one.

I didn't have problems with management or volunteers, other way around actually, because yesterday I went to pick up something and decided to go into the Dev room to see the stuff, but they stopped us for a moment because they were taping some wires.

badge shit is legit, I got bitched at for keeping mine in my purse.

>> No.7078942

Seems like the badge stuff was really all dependent on who you ran into. A friend of mine (who doesn't like anime) came to see my panel and I didn't think anything of it (I presumed he had bought a badge) but today my gf told me he had actually just asked the volunteer if he could see my panel and that was it and they let him in sans badge. My gf bought a badge for the weekend, but I was shocked that he had gotten in without one given what everyone's been saying on the thread.

Question, do they usually only have like 4 skits in the skit contest? I was a bit surprised there were so many if they separate skits and runway on different nights.

Twice when I was in the video rooms, they did random badge checks. It wasn't a lot but if you didn't have a badge out they asked to see it, and if they were suspicious they'd scan it. They were doing the same in the Artists Alley and the Gaming rooms too.

Most notable groups didn't compete. Two years ago they had 15+ skits and it was worthy of it's own slot. Last year it was 8, this year it was 4. Every group that normally brings something decent was missing. Saucy Noodle, Twinzik, JAC, EPS, Epic Flying Toasters, even the guys that won last year didn't perform this year. The monologue guy was good but he used a one-trick pony twice, so he needs something new.

I worry if they combine them back, you won't see a full contest on Sunday, you'll see it on Friday.

Why do they not do the contest Saturday like other cons? Is it because of the dance?

And I agree about the monologue guy (Forever Alone I think is his stage/group name?). Really well done and he seems to be a great performer, as well as someone who knows the technology (his was by far the best recorded) but after this the 4th-wall Persona stuff is going to get old unless he can shake it up a bit. "Character being forced to dance" has been done twice by him. But still, fantastic skit there and at A-kon.

I'm just a bit perplexed it was so short in terms of skits. Was this an off year in general for the entire con? It didn't feel as big as I've heard it is (first time attendee, so I have no idea). Do we have rough numbers yet?

>> No.7079458

>>7079451

Most times because of the bands they get. Why a band can't warm up on Friday when no one is there and then play Friday night instead of walk-on pre-judging being while people are still at work...no idea.

As far as the small number, it's just like with panels: they can only work with what people submit. It most likely is a testament to how much of a nose dive the con has made over the last two years when they had solid numbers every year prior.
