Babby's first breadboard; also, edges are sharpened and generally more sword-like. I'm not very happy with how much light the 6 LEDs put out, even compared to just my phone's flash's light like in the last pic, but oh well. I'm gonna cut out a couple inches of material from the ass end of the thing so hopefully there'll be a bit more light at the base of the blade.

Wasn't happy with the results from the first Alt-Eisen helm that used a model that was fairly low poly as its base. Decided to switch to a much higher quality 3d model by Ette.

It still needs mirrored glass for the eyes and strapping to keep it in place. Its got metal reinforcements for the ears and horn since they are so large.

Need to start building the limbs and body of this mother.

started this on Friday and have made pretty good progress so far - just attaching things at this point (I painted everything after these pictures were taken)
Been on a budget so I've only been doing costumes that I can make without spending any money. I already had everything so this cosplay has cost me 0 bucks so far and I'd like to keep it that way haha

Not him, but Home Depot has lexan/plexiglass/whatever you like to call it sheets but it's very expensive there. There are probably much cheaper sources for it.

LEDs can be gotten at Radioshack and probably any other specialty electronics store. You might have better luck just getting them online, though, if you want something unusual or very specific.

The LEDs was just Amazon. I'm not all that familiar with LEDs so I can't really say if it was a good buy or not.
Plastic was... I don't really remember the name of the site, but it was basically the cheapest result in the first few pages of Google. I usually use US Plastics, but they didn't have the right color.

>>7148393
They're unfinished; I gave them a bit of a once-over with 150-grit paper after sharpening them with a 80-grit belt sander, but you can still see the grain marks from the belt sander if you look close. I'm fine with that since it looks kinda cool, and it needs to be a rough surface otherwise you won't see as much light scattered from it, it'd be more like the flat edge.

Now it looks like its time for me to build a vacformer for guy's visor, then that should be about wrapped up as well. Hmmm, because it looks like you would most likely be after more directional light, if you are really feeling up to it you could get some high power LED's like the ones here:
(1) http://dx.com/p/3w-160-180lm-2850-3050k-warm-white-led-light-bulbs-20-piece-pack-133080
(2) http://dx.com/s/LED%2bbright%2bwhite?category=951&Sort=PriceL2H
Though, as these dram much higher current, I would recommend getting a LiPo battery to power them.

So like say that you connected two of the link (1) LED's (~3.1V rated voltage and ~625*10^-3 rated current) in series, and powered them with a 7.4V lipo battery.
The resistance required for this circuit would be: R = (7.4 - (2*3.1))/(625*10^-3) = 1.92ohms (or ~2ohms)
The wattage that this resistor must be (like as in the power it must ba able to dissipate) P = (I^2)*R = ((625*10^-3)^2)*1.92 = 0.75W

OR if you were to connect the two in paralel (here current drawn from the battery would be 2*625*10^-3) and power the circuit with a 3.7V LiPo battery then the cacluations would be:
R = (3.7 - 3.1)/(2*625*10^-3) = 0.48ohms (or ~0.5ohms)
P = ((2*625*10^-3)^2)*0.5 = 0.75W

So in both cases the resistance used must be rated to at least 0.75W (or ~1W for ease of things), though in the paralel case as the resistance is so small (~0.5owms), you should be able to just do without it.
Also with both cases make sure to use some bulky wire, at least 21AWG.

THOUGH, all of this does require you to buy a bunch or stuff like a LiPo battery and a charger (if you don't already have one), so can get quite expensive. In the end if you are happy with what you have then its all good in the hood.

Thanks for the help! Unfortunately though, the space constraint for the LEDs is pretty tight at a little under 1/4", since that's the width of the blade and accordingly the hollow space in the hilt. I guess I might be able to sand a little bit with a dremel tool to make it wider, and I'll have to do that to fit the 12v battery in, but with the leads on those I don't think I'd be able to fit enough into the thing to make it brighter than what I've got so far.

Plus, I think the ones I have are already reasonably directional; something like 15° viewing angle?

At any rate, further progress; got the scabbard pieces glued together and awaiting sanding down and rounding off. Put some anti-pill fleece into the inside of it so the blade doesn't get too scratched up.

It's Toyosatomimi no Miko's sword, from Hopeless Masquerade. She's got this one attack (one of two attacks where she actually pulls out the sword, and she never actually uses it to cut, but I digress) where she pulls it out a bit and it shoots a burst of light across the screen in a laser-like attack. That's kinda what I'm going for... but it's not gonna be nearly that bright apparently, haha.

At any rate, I made a shoe. Really not happy with it though... it looks like craft foam on a beach sandal instead of a sweet golden sandal, because that's pretty much what it is. And I'm sure it'll fall apart after a full day of con-ing... egh. Not sure what to do other than this, though.

Hey guys, here's my brotherhood of steel helmet I wore to the con last year.

But Now, I'm looking at making the entire suit.

I'm wondering what a good matterial to shape a bodysuit would be? In the helmet I used clay, card stock, resin, and the like, I'd like it to look asthetically similar, the suit looks much easier than the helmet, but I could be wrong.

Thoughts?

The suit is a longer more drawn out process, generally with armor like this you make the helmet last since it is going to be the focal point of the armor.

As for making armor given your skill level you might want to look at making it from a pep file and then reinforcing it with fiberglass and resin.

pic related, it's my armor built from a rough kit on the rpf.

And these are basically done now. They turned out better than I expected. Not sure if I should bother making the toe-caps match or not (they're pretty close color-wise, but they're a fake suede material). I mean, it'd look nice, but I'm worried about the practicality since the toe warps a bit more than the heel when worn. Maybe I'll just go find some shiny PVC and use the same paint on it so there's not such a stark contrast between the textures, but it's still a bit flexible.

The primer is uh... Rustoleum 2-in-1––the kind that's designed to fill surface flaws and be sandable. I just masked the area and sprayed that on, did some wet sanding, primed again, and some more really light wet sanding to get it nice and smooth and then I hit it with Valspar Perfect Finish in gloss (the shit in the picture). I forget what color it was exactly. I kinda wanted something a little more vibrant but this was the best they had. Anyway, basically standard spray painting procedure.

That Valspar shit is really nice btw. I used it on another project recently and it's pretty durable and goes on real smooth.

And one toe-cap finished. I only have one finished because the other one had some rougher spots and I'm waiting for another layer of primer to dry. I experimented with just pulling a layer of cheap plastic over the top (I had an old shower curtain liner lying around and figured it might work), but my rubber cement didn't adhere well to the fake suede and the spray paint caused the plastic to pucker unpredictably after I stretched it over the toe (didn't do that when I did a test on a flat piece). So, instead I just painted the toe caps with a few layers of mod-podge and then primed and painted just like the heels. I think it turned out pretty well. It's not perfectly smooth, but I think it's pretty passable and still somewhat flexible.

On the downside, some paint leaked under my masking tape onto the clear PVC, hopefully I can scrub that off later and the plastic bags I was using to cover the rest of the shoe left ugly scratches on the heels, so that'll need another coat of paint probably. Fucking gloss paints. I'm not sure a gloss topcoat would help much.

Just a stock photo. I went for the type with clear PVC in the middle so I could wear it over leggings designed to look like the boots. Originally I was thinking about making the back detail detachable so I could use the shoes again in her non-Junketsu outfit, but I don't think that'll work so well. There was another similar pair with less of the plastic visible, but it made the ankle strap a lot more critical in keeping she shoes on, so I settled on these.

I know some people find the shoe-over-socks/leggings instead of boot covers thing tacky, but it just seemed a bit more practical here to me and I don't think it looked bad (might have to hit the PVC with some satin topcoat to dull the shin a bit though). Also the heels are really fucking high, so I figure being able to take them off easily is a plus.

there's a few things that might fix it. they might just need to be hemmed a bit shorter. otherwise make sure that your ease in the cap is a bit more even. it could be an issue of the seam allowance being off. if you modified a pattern to narrow the sleeve you might have to trim the cap down a bit to account for that. and maybe last, if you're wearing a shirt under it and the sleeves are bunching inside the jacket, that could totally mess it up.

It's a cheap plastic. And it's big enough.

But how would I go about making it look worn out and make it look real?

Or is there a better way?

And it's pretty much done now. Just need to get some cording for the scabbard decoration. It's not perfect, but I think it's passable for now. It's pretty ugly up close in some areas, but at normal viewing distance it looks alright.

Waited til the last minute to start on my Halloween stuff and rushed all this (besides the initial clearwrap double) in ~3.5 days, while working each day so I did have time to post over here as I was crafting. I wanted to learn to make a proper bunny suit but ran out of time so I cheated and wore an underbust corset underneath for support instead. I still ended up wasting half a day trying to bone it first though.
Not particularly happy with the leaves but they were the best I could find locally so I tried to compensate with around 10 hours of meticulous gluing. Cuffs/heels were literally thrown together just before walking out the door so hopefully I can redo them in to proper accessories for actual convention wear.

I don’t know why I took Halloween so seriously this year as I hardly did anything and the time crunch+ stress was nearly as bad as the days just before a con.
However, I did tackle me fear of bunny suits so that is something.

The base sword was made up of 3 pieces basically: the scabbard (the white part here), the blade (not pictured) and the handle. I didn't take a picture before I got started, unfortunately, but it's a pretty generic cheesy, plastic 'ninja' sword. The blade portion was just rubber-cemented into the handle, so I removed it before I started modifying the handle/hand guard and scabbard, so it'd be out of the way.

Here's what the handle looked like when I installed the blade (pardon the stupid filter, the light in my room was looking real orange when I took shots of this stage, so I just slapped the bluest looking default filter gimmick on it to correct it somewhat). I already glued it in so I can't take another shot of it separately, but the silver blade section is a separate piece and it just sits inside the hollow handle. The blade then goes into the scabbard (the white part) like a regular sword does and the added pieces just sorta fit together (not as well as I'd like really, but it's close enough).

I somehow managed to finish that Miko costume... about 5 minutes before I was due for judging. Just like Laharl last year, oy. I'm really bad at this whole timing thing.

I'd post a finished picture of it all together, but unfortunately I don't have any yet.

I've never been a fan of how stiff corsets make people look when under a costume(also the belly pudge caused by corsets looks kind of odd since it does that to everyone. Would a belly band limit that?

I assume the poster means the spill-over above and under the corset. A properly worn corset or girdle wouldn't show that, only retards in off the rack corsets look stiff and lumpy.

not who you are replying too, but because an improperly fitted corset pushes flesh down, a lot of people get this awkward bulging in the lower pelvic region where the corset ends.
You can see it on that ivy

That's not bulge though, that's just where the hip naturally expands out due to the pelvic bone. Everyone's pelvic bone does that.

Going as a Hunter since it's simple enough for a first time cosplayer. All I have so far is a lot of fake blood for the clothing, and this fang set bookmarked. The rest I can just Goodwill for.

Think this'd work? I'm a bit unsure.

No it's not that...I guess I am not explaining it properly.
Your flesh has to go somewhere and 9/10 cosplay corsets are not seasoned at all, it is just flesh pushed down to create a flesh squishy bulge. It is not your Iliac crest or part of your bones.

You're talking about a "pooch" then? (Excess flab on the abdomen?)

My anterior iliac crest protrudes all the time so yeah this is clearly not a corset thing. I do have to admit it would be ridiculously accentuated if I were to put one on though, I'd look fucking disgusting. It is a most unfortunate phenomena when pants shopping though, damn.

Ya, deff a pooch. I mean, everyone has a little one, but when your corset does not fit your hips and is squeezing them like most OTR corsets will, holey hell does it look like shit.

I don't know, its a thing you notice when you tight lace.

That's pretty sweet, though I'd suggest replacing the plastic sword's fake-wrap with an actual ito wrap. It's not too difficult to do, and looks really nice when done well.

>> No.7175984

>>7175976

Yeah, I was thinking about it, but the fake wrap texture is pretty heavily embossed (there's like a good half inch deep indent between each one), I worry that doing a real wrap would just end up slipping around or looking bizarre unless I replaced the handle with something smooth and I just don't have time right now. I might try it after I get the rest of the costume done and see how it looks though.

>> No.7176047

>>7175984
Ah, that's fair enough. When you do get the time, I'd say maybe use a belt sander or something to just grind the handle smooth, then wrap on top of that. Then you wouldn't have to take it all apart or something.
