So guys, my best friend and I want to go to our big con as Pancham and Teddiursa mascots together. I figure the two bear pokemon are going to be adorable together. I've made mascots before, but never one with quite so large of a head to body to legs disparity. I was hoping /cgl/ would brainstorm some ideas with me to be as accurate size wise as possible. The go-to answer would be to make the head absolutely enormous, but I can hopefully find a middle ground with you all.

Pic related is the only teddiursa mascot I found.

Uhh...I know how to make mascots, and that's definitely not it. Just sweating would make something like that collapse on you. Fiberglass for a stiff head, or upholstery foam for a soft head. That's not the problem at all, as I clearly stated in the OP. I was asking what /cgl/ thinks about balancing just how large teddiursa's head is compared to its body. It's 2 heads tall. A human is typically 6-8 heads tall. That means that, scaled up to human size, teddiursa's neck is somewhere near crotch level on an adult. That's not really viable as a costume.

Look at teddiursa. Look at that adorable fucker. Now try and imagine a human inside of it. That's what I'm having trouble with.

>> No.7176241

I've never personally made a mascot but from just glancing at the picture, if you want it to be a smaller head, then make the body bigger so it's more proportion right?

The head could be to the mid-chest or something.

Also you're under estimating the strength of paper maché, which can be very strong. It's only time consuming to make because you have to make sure each layer is dried thoroughly before you add another layer on or else mold can happen. And then you just seal it to prevent moisture from weakening it.

Piggy backing off of this.

I want to make a Blastoise costume, and I can't decide how to make the "ring" around the shell, you know, the white part. Should I just go with paper mache? I was thinking of using some sort of flexible plastic piping, but I can't find any that are six inches in diameter and not ribbed for ventilation.

What does the seagull braintrust have to say?

Also, where is the cheapest head molding kit out there? I see ones for 100 dollars, but I know that they're jewing me.

>> No.7177459

>>7177435
The white part is still part of the shell. It would only make sense to use the same material or similar to the rest of the shell.

And what material for head molding sod you want to use? I personally use light weight resin, but that requires clay sculpting, mold making and whatnot. What materials are you experienced with?

>> No.7177468

>>7177459
I decided to look at what the furfuckers use, which is what I'll be emulating, and apparently they wrap their heads in plastic bags and duct tape, so I'll just use that and cast a head inside of it.

I don't consider the white part to be the same part of the shell as the front or the back, really. I'm using pleather for the front and back, and I don't think that would translate very well on the rim.

>> No.7177472

>>7177230
Did you drop your trip for this?

>> No.7177500

>>7177468
I know quite a few of those furfuckers, and I've never heard of using a plastic bag and duct tape to make a mascot head? Or are you talking about making a cast of your own human head? If that's what you're talking about, medical plaster bandage in a few layers should do much better than duct tape. A duct tape mold will warp badly. Plaster bandage is not too expensive, either.

And what do you think that white part on Blastoise is, then? I always thought it was the rim of the shell since the shell is drawn the same way as koopas and any other japanese turtle. You could try attaching warbla sheets and paint them like armor.

>> No.7177637

>>7177500
I'm casting my head and then applying cut outs of foam to it for the base, then applying larger 3d foam carvings for the features. I decided I'll make a duct tape head out of tape and a balaclava, then fill it with expanding sealant foam for a quick and dirty head cast.

I don't know how to describe the white part, but I would think it would be more of a "bony/shiny/rigid" type of thing, whereas the back and front are more "leathery/flexible."

>> No.7177650

>>7177637
I'd still recommend using plaster bandage rather than duct tape. The front of your face will be completely lost with duct tape. If you want head size, there are male head busts that are cheap at only $5-$10 at black beauty salons. Other than that, it sounds like you're on track.

That's interesting. I always figured the shell on the back would be really hard, the white part was the outside of the shell, and the belly would be hard, or maybe leathery. Either way, I think warbla painted to look hard is going to be more lightweight and doable than most options. There's this poly sheeting sold at my Tapp plastics that can be heat warped, but I don't know how available it is elsewhere and it seems like it would be unnecessarily heavy and bothersome for what you're doing.

>> No.7177671

>>7177650
In real life I think Blastoise would fit your description, but I'm making him soft with hardened edges to fit a more cartoonish artstyle. I'm using pleather for the front and back. I'm going for a step between a plushie type of furry costume and an actual turtle, which, in my mind, is blue, brown, and tan pleather.

>> No.7177679

>>7177671
Makes sense. Pokemon are a really tough call, since even Blastoise's cannon is colored the same as his face, so you're never sure what anything is. (Insert flesh ribbon pun here)

They said beach ball and paper mache, which is the poor-man's head blank. As a fursuiter you should know the dangers of sweat-laden paper mache breaking down and cracking. There was a bad incident at anthrocon 09 of a brittle head dropping dust into the suiter's eyes and they had to be carted off to the hospital and the head was chopped off and destroyed.

Either way, I already replied to him in the third post. It's not a big deal, he probably just read the subject and assumed what I was asking. I don't care. I wasn't offended as it seems some of these anons are. No big deal.

And for reference, I do scale comparisons by drawing teddiursa over a photo of myself. Doesn't help with figuring out how something like that would move. Can it sit, can it see, that sort of thing.

>> No.7178120

Building durable for the long term leaves you with two popular options. A soft head like a plushie is usually high density upholstery foam - think of the thickest, most uncomfortable but flexible couch backing. The other is for hard heads. Fiberglass is the way to go. For either, you might build a rough structure to build upon like metal hoops or chicken wire. This does not go into the final product, it's to get you started.

Once you have most of a sphere, you have to either mount it to your shoulders (heavier heads) or onto your own head (via a helmet or similar structure).

Did that answer your question, or did you need clarification or other methods?

I'm planning on doing a mascot cosplay like the one OP wants to do - the cat mascot of the Fairyland Cafe from Azumanga Daioh.

Exposure to heat and moisture (sweat, hot breath) over longer periods of time causes the glue to break down. Both elmers glue and wallpaper glue are water soluble. You might be lucky, or maybe you didn't wear your costume that long. You used it on an enclosed head? As a prop material it is fine, but paper mache is not good for anything exposed to constant moisture.

That's nothing back breaking at all. That pretty mild for most of America in August, California and Florida hit the hundreds in August. And the body isn't really the issue, it's all about the head.

I'm guessing your suit either has good ventilation and the hot moisture is escaping pretty well, or that the roof of your head has a lot of moisture damage but it is thick enough/supported well enough to have not shown signs of wear yet.
