You're missing the point. It doesn't matter if they didn't have a choice, if the venue sucks, the venue sucks, and I'm not going to waste my money on a shitty con in a shitty venue.

Maybe you just didn't encounter anything wrong (which is a pretty big miracle IMO)
I was a panellist, and I gotta say, paying full price to be there when all my co-panellists were guests was not cool. Besides that, The "panel room" was a hallway out in an open space where you could hear the entire con but not yourself, because the microphone speakers were located downstairs underneath the panel room. Luckily they won't have to deal with that this year because they got Unplugged's old venue... except wait, that venue sucked too. I remember several people having issues with one thing or another, and Antonio was nowhere to be found.

If you only have one month to plan a con, you shouldn't try to run a con that only had a month of planning put into it. I have no idea why they moved it to December since it was in January last year. When their first venue rejected them they should have held off till the new year instead of cramming it in at the end of this year.

Also, they have no real guests. VickyBunnyAngel is the only one I would consider guest worthy, and she's everywhere all the time so the opportunity to see her is not missed. Everyone else on that guest list is a joke... not to mention our favourite foot fetish photographer, Tom Savage.

Mark and Alex, you're making me laugh!

First: NO PANELIST GOT A DISCOUNT! Even Anime North doesn't give their panelists a discount so why would you expect a start up con to?

Second: We get that you don't like Antonio, or FrostCon. Sure, convince your friends not to go. That's not gonna bother the staff or people that enjoyed their time. Actually, staff might be happy if you don't show up.

Third: There's no point in telling people who support the staff and had fun not to go. Your bitching about stupid things is not going to get anyone to change their minds.

Fourth: ConBravo, I wouldn't attend even if it was the last con on earth. Why? Because it sucks, the guests are nobodies, and the con chair is a bigamist asshole who thinks publicly humiliating people is a good thing.

>> No.7206651

>>7206637
Hey hey hey, I haven't told anyone not to attend Frostcon. That would seem to be the effort *you* guys keep making towards ConBravo!. I also think Antonio needs to stop confusing his stories about *why* he was banned.

Here's the thing: Antonio isn't banned from the convention this year. He was barred for one year due to his severe breaking of the vendor hall rules in 2012. Every vendor has to pay for their space in order to sell a product, and he did not. He came in with another vendor, set up his own table with a pay-for service without an agreement or payment, and got kicked out for it.

But obviously, anyone who comes back to the con is under scrutiny. We offer a safe environment to our attendees, and we have to safeguard the service we offer our vendors as much as is within our power. Antonio's track record has not filled me with confidence regarding his ability to comply with either.

>> No.7206662

>>7206637
All the panellists except me were guests. I'm saying it's fair to give me a free pass if all the other panellists got in free.
Also I didn't pay to get in when I was a panellist at Unplugged, Con-G, or ConBravo

I'm trying to get people to save their money and spend it on better cons instead of giving Antonio of all people their money just so they have an excuse to hang out in cosplay with their friends.
My personal vendetta's only serve as an example of what kind of people they are and why you shouldn't associate with them or give them your hard earned money. I'm not telling anyone they have to agree with me or change their minds, I'm simply saying why I personally had a shit experience and why I don't think it's worth the money, so I won't be attending.

At least ConBravo's guests weren't just a bunch of community people.

>> No.7206666

>>7206637
Anime North gives their panelists a full refund or some form of compensation. Startup cons should also give their panelists some form of benefit, since they are staff. The panelists give content to the con, taking time out of their day to do so, and should get something in return.

You can't expect a startup con to offer hotel rooms, or anything that costs them but giving a free ticket costs them nothing.

>> No.7206669

>>7206666
I think the implication here is that panelists received an advance discount. Our arrangement for CB! is that panelists receive badge reimbursement based on a number of hours of content provided. We essentially see it as an integral community service, much like volunteering, and so remittance is paid accordingly.

The only one i didn't recognize was Arila, how the hell is she a guest? Her page has less than 300 likes, all her cosplays look bought, and she looks like a man. Frostcon, you could at least invite someone who makes their own costumes and has won some awards.

Quality over quantity

Just a bit of helpful criticism. On your skirt you should make the white ends longer and attach each layer of the skirt individualy, that would make the cosplay fit bettter around your body and look less straight as it does now.
The shoes should be a bit longer up your legs and should have some pink lacing if you want the character to be dead on.
The shorts are longer then the orginal character but seeing as its winter, I don't think thats a real problem at all.
The shirt is pretty much dead on so good job!
your hair's good enough you don't need a wig so bravo to that~
So the only real thing I think needs work is the skirt part. Hope this helps~

We approached all of our guests that we've had. And before people complain that we are cosplay heavy with our guests, our main genre that FrostCon represents is cosplay/costuming. But we most look at what they've done for the community, what they've done in their careers, professionalism, and amount of requests that we get for them.

You realize how narrow you've made your market, right? Like stated before the guestlist is comprised of all amateur-good (at best) cosplayers. If anything, this is just a glorified and paid cosplay meetup.

In the FC vs DTAC debate, at least DTAC actually gets professional people that work in the general geek-interested industry which attract a wider con audience. Yet you guys specifically limit yourself to appeal to cosplayers, let alone cosplayers that would even bother to give a shit about any of your guests. I had to Google every single one of the guests that was mention >>7206276, and I still have no idea who they are. In fact I'm actually more turned off from attending if that's what you consider GoH worthy for a "cosplayer con".

Also you REALLY have to stop calling Tom Savage a "guest" for your convention. Just because he's a friend of Antonio doesn't mean he has the skills or professionalism to be considered a guest. That's definitely the final nail in the coffin on my interest in this con.

tl;dr both cons are shitty. But FC goes out of it's way to be even worst than imagined.

Eh, it's sometimes not a bad idea to target a specific audience, especially one that's a loyal payer. DotCon's major failure was that they didn't do this. The tried to be one more anime convention when their real audience was J-rock fans.

That said, J-rock was already on its way out, so they'd have ended up as grossly niche. Cosplay is still growing (plateau is probably 3 years away), so it's not a *bad* choice. It does limit your interest groups, but it has the potential to create loyalty.

If you're looking to have a cosplay/costuming based convention then you should look at inviting guest who a skilled is different costuming elements: sewing, fabrication, wigs, painting etc.
You can then request/require that the run/sit on at least one panel/workshop on some sort of costuming technique.

There are plenty of GTA / South Ontario cosplayers and professional costume makers (theater, film, fashion) who would gladly been a guest for free (or close to). Instead Frost Con has decided to invite guests with very little name recognition, no determinable skill specialization and little to no guest/panel experience. Some of these individuals are FLYING in for a one day convention.... I hope that travel is not comped by Frost Con.

Basically if you want to have a foothold as a 'Cosplay / Costuming' convention you should get you shit together on what a convention like that would even offer (see Costume Con for details)

In the defense of Tom, while his foot fetish is pretty weird you have to realise, most of his models come to him for pictures not the other way around. They most likly know he has a foot fetish as he's pretty damn open about it. Also, he doesn't charge for pictures and he tries to incude everyone.
On the subject of Antonio. I understand he's done some things that have got him pretty much hated by a majority of the cosplayers, namely the whole getting banned and how he wasn't really helpful at the last frost con.

But when you get down to it, every con deserves at least a second try. The first year is normaly going to have things that suck, its the second year that matters on rather or not they fix things.
Remember the DTAC where they boxed us into a tiny space and one security guard got into a fist fight? The following year they put us back in the north building like people had been asking for, they made sure certain guards that had given us trouble in the past were not anywhere to be scene. Was it all good? Fuck no. But it was better.

So, lets give Frost Con one last chance. If it sucks as bad as last year, don't go back cus it shows they haven't learned anything. If its good, lets work with them to make sure it gets better and better.

The funniest part of this is people don't seem to realise that threads like this actually help Tom. He may loose a model or two because of the drama but I have literally witnessed girls approach him at cons mentioning the threads and asking for shoots. As long as people see his name thrown around 4chan all the time he is bad or good, a kinda anti-celebrity and as long as there are attention whores at cons they will go to him trying to get in on all this attention you are freely giving him. To many, letting this man photograph their feet is well worth all the attention they will get as a result and you might as well be making commercials for him. Back in my day Toronto didn't have a cgl scene and there were only 2-3 tripfags from there. And we said, "boy it'd sure be nice if there were more people from around here on cgl."

So I only have enough cash to go into Toronto once that weekend, but can't decide on if I should attend FrostCon or DTAC/DTCC. FrostCon has the better guests, but costs more and seems like a lot of problems. Well DTAC/DTCC has the same old comic artists guests that I have met before at previous convention, but always seems to be a cattle pen for people that attend.

Which convention should I attend?

Depends on what kind of experience you're looking for. Yes, I know everyone's been saying all these horror stories and vendettas towards FC, but I honestly think more cosplayers will be there. While with DTAC, since it's advertised with a comic section, the majority of con-goers will most likely be adults and casuals.

Most if not all of the Toronto tripfags are below average cosplayers anyways. People want attention on here because they won't get it anywhere else.

tbh, the Toronto con scene isn't bad if you avoid people like this, which isn't hard. Most of them hang around together in low traffic areas of cons, look unapproachable and complain about the con/nit-picking cosplayers most of the time (yet they won't stay home). There are a lot of cool people out there, most just don't frequent to cgl.
