So I managed to find the source on these, but I am not paying 450 for a pair of shoes.
Id like to DIY them but Im not sure what materials would be best? Would silicone work for the whipped cream part? What about the chocolate drip and icecream? I've never worked with deco things.. Any advice would be lovely, thanks!

I'm doing embroidery for the first time. Specifically cross stitching.
I've got the aida, I've got the hoops, I've got the needles, I've got the patterns and.... The thread.

The majority of my thread is size 25. But one, the color that I use the most in this pattern, is a size 5.
I bought them not really paying attention, since there are numbers all over the damn label that I don't understand. So I just picked by color.

The 25 I'm using two threads for the cross stitch (I'm on 16 count aida). Is there any way I can still use the size 5? If I used just one strand?
Or should I up the 25 to three threads or more to match it with the thickness of the 5?

I felt so stupid unwinding the 5 and realizing I was just fraying thread. There was no more strands wound around. Just two big threads spiraling around each other, as opposed to the six strands in the size 25.

Did I done fucked up?

I'm really not sure where or how to start on a pattern for this. It's obviously made of a woven fabric(I'm planning on using linen), has a side opening, and is held up by a belt without any apparent belt loops. Maybe the belt is stitched directly to the fabric? I feel like any modern pattern I find for a shape like this will be made for stretch fabric.

Not exactly cosplay related but sewing related - can anybody tell me why my machine is doing this?

The needle will move up and down but will not actually "advance" in sewing if that makes sense. I think it's the bobbin but I'm not actually sure. I'm new to sewing on my own so I'd really like to get this sorted out.

>> No.7407960

It's because your top thread isn't picking up the thread off the bobbin, it really depends on the machine but when this happens to me I either have thread set up the top thread incorrectly, or my tension is fucked up, if you're working with strange materials that can fuck it up too.

>> No.7407961

You're right. I can't be impatient like this.
I'll see if I can get a trip into town around my work schedule. I could probably think of some things that I need to pick up anyway.
Is doing the rest of the colors alright, though? I've heard that you're supposed to put the 'base' color on first and then all the things that are supposed to be on top of that, but maybe if I pushed around the threads a bit you wouldn't be able to tell I did the main color last.

>> No.7407968

Re-thread, re-needle, check your tension, check that you haven't hit your length setting down to zero (sews in place to make a knot, but if you just let it go it will just ball up)

sounds like your feed dogs aren't moving, if what you're saying (the fabric is not being moved under your sewing foot) is what is actually happening.

Though seriously, first thing you should always try is rethreading and putting in a new needle. Not kidding when I say I saw my sewing teacher fix a machine that no one else in the shop could figure out just by putting in a new needle, weird shit happens when needles are blunt or put in incorrectly.

Check and make sure your shuttle is sitting correctly inside the arm as well.

I have no problem with the dress, I also already have a petticoat.

But I have a problem with the apron, you can see at the bottom that it's not part of the dress, but somehow, there's nothing to hold it at the top ? There are no straps ?

I feel that if I just make a strapless apron, it's not going to sit well, and it will look like shit.

Should I make it like that anywas ? Should I add straps ? Should I sew the top of the apron to the bodice of the dress ?

Sorry, I'm a noob.

Maybe you could make it as one piece. That would save on the amount of pink fabric you need and then you wouldn't have to worry about the apron moving. To get the bottom to look like it is 2 layers, just attach a tall strip of pink fabric a little ways up underneath the white

Well. Yes and no. I don't have your swatch, so I can't really say, but it's not going to drape very well and you'll end up with more bulk in the seams than with a garment weight vinyl or leather. Yeah, it's definitely not ideal, but I'm having a bitch of a time finding an accurate fabric. Perhaps I can find a suitable garment weight texturized pleather and paint...all my pieces...that silver-blue color with leather paint? Is Angelus tough enough to be used on a garment like that?

>> No.7412256

Get a lighter-weight pleather in white, and paint it with Jacquard Lumiere acrylics, their Hi-Lite Blue is like the perfect iridescent color for that. The instructions will recommend heat-setting with an iron for washability but a hairdryer on high works fine too.

You need more ringlet-y curls in front, and if your hair is as black as it looks in the photo it needs to be browner. Also, I thought you were cosplaying Dream from the Sandman series from the thumbnail: have you considered this?

Is the end a standard measurement you could find something like a PVC pipe connector in?
I recommend Barge Cement as an adhesive.

Caterina from Trinity Blood has hair like that, if you want to search for older tutorials. Here's a picture from GodSaveTheQueen that might help: http://gstqfashions.deviantart.com/art/Caterina-Sforza-Wig-Right-103890744 It looks like stuffed fabric tubes wrapped in extra weft and then wrapped in the hair from the wig?

>> No.7412265

Asuka's jumpsuit is pretty stiff anyway, it could save you having to interface the collar as much. Is it the stiffness, texture or colour of the upholstery vinyl that's bothering you?

Also, would you consider using taobao? They have garment weight pleather in a huge range of colours, I could look around for a light metallic blue if you like. Leather paint could possibly work, but the more layers you use (to get a consistent colour) the more likely it is to crack, especially in a garment that's tight-fitting and you'll be moving around in.

>> No.7412267

Yeah, I've done that. I cut everything, painted, and then was out of time so I didn't seal it and the red tends to mark white things it rubs against, but it hasn't cracked or flaked or peeled. In general it should work.

>> No.7412317

Thanks guys! The upholstery vinyl would probably work, but I'm worried about the bulk at the seams fucking up the collar/zipper, and also it's pretty pricey. It looks like spandex world has a good white garment weight pleather with similar texture to Asuka's -- I'll get a couple swatches from them, but I'll probably go with that and paint it. >> No.7413136

I look for specific collar or sleeve types. Search for "raglan sleeve shirt"

If it's for a school uniform, those usually sit fairly high, at bellybutton level.

You should use the same material for all blue parts of the costume, I would pick a stretch suiting for ease of hat + boot covers.
For the hat, I would start off with a sun hat so the brim is the right shape, make a base for the cone part out of felt, and then cover the whole thing in your suiting fabric.
I don't know what that fastener at the neck is called either, but I don't think it has to function for you to be able to put the robes on.

>> No.7413230

I can't seem to find one for you that's got full-length sleeves lighter than the body :X
Can you sew at all? If you can do even a mildly competent whipstitch, I would buy a gray sweatshirt with raglan sleeves, unstitch the sleeves from the body and collar, and then RIT dye the body and sleeves separately and sew them back together. Fleece doesn't fray badly so it doesn't matter if you don't finish the seams.

>> No.7413265

>> No.7413269

The velvets that look bad are usually crushed/panne velvets. I would look for cotton velvet, so it won't look cheap-shiny and so you can dye it if the color needs tweaking.

Are you looking to do machine or hand embroidery?

Lacey Wigs (the brand everyone used to use back when Kanekalon wigs were top-tier, resold by Amphigory) makes a good pompadour wig, search for "Lacey deluxe Elvis". The company makes them in three tiers of quality and deluxe is the nicest.

Learn to blind-hem things, that's something you can do without a machine. Try to match fabrics within a color (ie, to get the blouse and legwarmers to match, buy a long-sleeve shirt in the right color and modify the sleeves into the legwarmers).

On a real seifuku that would be a bandana with the ends tied in a knot, but that's too fancy for that. Just pin a bow on.

HAH you can't 3D print things that size. Look at other plugsuit armor tutorials, the usual method seems to be EVA foam covered in vinyl and attached with snaps or velcro. You definitely don't want anything rigid as plastic or fiberglass around your neck like that, it will hurt like a bitch. I would go with a fencing breast protector + EVA foam covered in vinyl.

So regarding a Tsumiki wig, first I'm unsure of whether or not to go with the ahoge (afraid it would be too unstable for it's size) or cat ears (more stable but only happens sometimes in the show).
And then I'm unsure of how to get her hair to be voluminous since it is shown to be fairly poofy. Is that even possible? I was thinking teasing or placing something in it, but I don't have any idea what would actually work.

>> No.7414615

If you use a thick wire for the ahoge, it'll stand up fairly well. There's a Hetalia curl tutorial on deviantArt (file size is too big to be posted here) that explains it pretty well.

For the hair, you'll probably have to do a lot of teasing + combing hair over the teased areas to make it appear smooth.

>> No.7414622

I was assuming as much, but do you think I'll need two wigs then? I just don't think the wigs they sell have enough hair to make enough tease-poof and then cover it up. I haven't done this, just guessing from how much hair wigs tend to have. Oh, and thanks for your input.

Alright, so I'm looking for some help as a starter.

I've cosplayed before, but it was just something that I spent a ton of money on. Nothing I actually put together myself. I'm looking to start putting some things together for Otakon 2014, and right now I'm looking on perfecting my last cosplay (Yu Narukami) since my friend will be doing Izanagi and it'll be cash as fuck. I should be able to handle this (I'm gonna have it tailored to actually fit me and style the wig, get a useable sword and quality contacts).

I'm also looking to put together a Thresh (League of Legends) and an Uzu Sanageyama (Kill la Kill). I don't want them to be shitty though. I want to take these characters and blow them out of the water with quality and craftsmanship.

Where the hell do I start? I am literally the least crafty person on the planet.

>> No.7415101

>> No.7415109

First, stop. Pick one of your cosplays, and just work on that.

If you need to sew, practice sewing for a few days. Straight lines, hems, button holes, weird seams, corners, everything you might need.

Once you feel comfortable enough with practice of the things you need to do for your costume, deconstruct it. Figure out exactly every piece, and what you'll need to do to make it. Run this by a friend if at all possible. Run it by the help thread if something seems iffy. Personally, I'd try and "deconstruct" my cosplay a second time, just to make sure I'm not overlooking anything.

Once you do that, buy the materials and make it. But seriously, if you're just starting, focus on one thing at a time, and really take it slow. If you only get a hem done one day because you had to look up how to make it zig zag, that's fine. It now probably looks a lot better than if you just bullrushed into it because you have another cosplay you need to make.

To be honest, if your holding up wings, your going to nee more then adhesiv. Wings catch wind (go figure) and bounce when you walk. Anything you glue it with will weaken from that, even with sweat and oil sealer.

Oh okay that sounds good! But I'm having trouble on what to pick.

Pic related, the Demeter wigs are the perfect length for Majolica but for some reason both the Demeter and Asteria wigs are labeled as Natural Blonde, but the Demeter wig looks a lot more platinum then the Asteria one.
Is it just the lighting difference or is the Demeter Natural Blonde one actually as platinum as in the picture? If it is should I buy the shorter Asteria wig or should I go with the Caramel Demeter wig?

>> No.7415954

I'm actually looking at those same 2 wigs for Sailor Pluto (has similar length to your character) and honestly, I'm going for the 50" to save myself the headache. Most people I've seen only get the 40" wigs though.

Get a long one for photoshoots if you're keen on accuracy. They're super high maintenance so every movement and bump will cause it to slowly get more and more mussed. I've heard spraying car lube on it before you even wear it helps prevent a lot of that however.

As for colour, the NB looks best, but if it ends up looking like the Demeter NB pic, I'd go for the caramel as it's probably not that yellow unless you're standing in yellow light (which is what the right pic seems like).

>> No.7415987

Epic is at least a good choice since they are less prone to tangle but I agree with other anons that you are going to want a shorter wig. Their photos are pretty bad though, so that might explain the variation. They sell samples now so I would buy one to make sure you like the color.

Would I be able to use some heat on the wig too once I get one? I want to add a slight bit of waviness to the wig towards the bottom like Majolica's hair. And okay! Put the tights on and mark where you want the gem stones to go. Make sure whatever you use to do this will leave marks that are considerably smaller than the gem stones themselves.

Get glue that's made for adhering small embellishments to fabric. Get the kind that can be washed after it has set. Craft stores have a few of these.

While you're there, pick up some heavy, thick gauge wire. The plastic coated type would be ideal so as not to snag the tights but if you can make it bend without needing to use two hands it's not going to work. Bare wire will be fine as long as the metal is absolutely smooth (and remains so when bent!) along its length. You can cap the ends off with a bit of wine cork/rubber eraser/tampon(?)/whatever you've got + electrical tape.

Form the wire into a large spring shape by wrapping it around whatever you can find that's sturdy, durable, and about the same size as your leg.

Double- and triple-check that there is nothing that could snag your tights. Folded electrical tape corners included.

Slip your wire spring frame down one side of the tights. Stand it upright so you can get all the way around each time. Keep whatever fabric you aren't working with clipped up and out of the way somehow. If it were me, I'd start at the thigh and work my way down (after doing both thighs I mean), but it won't hurt anything to start at the foot if you prefer.

Anyway this will let you glue the gem stones to only the tights, and in a way that won't send them flying off as soon as the fabric stretches. You'll have to do it in batches though, depending on how much wire you get. Plan on this taking one batch per day; those glues generally suggest allowing 24hrs to cure.

Search "contouring" hun.
You'll need at least two more of whatever you currently use for powder, one that's a shade darker and one that's a shade lighter. I think Goss on youtube has a good video up explaining what does what.

The reason for the wire is the negative space. Gluing the embellishments to the tights will glue the tights to the duct tape.

Do they have to be directly where your own eyes sit, or can you get away with them being a bit above?

On the other hand, rather then just doing a basic genderbend, you could actually do the canon one from the manga. It's in the manga part with the book of Eibon where they end up in the chapter for Lust.

>> No.7417845

There's actually a genderswap Maka in the manga for a chapter. I forget what chapter, but maybe you should take a look for it.

>> No.7417852

What material is it anyway. I was thinking I could find matching fabric and make pants, but I don't think there are any plaid fabrics with normal pants texture, like slacks or something.
That's an interesting idea, but the design from the manga is kind of boring to me.

Using Worbla would be great for this.
Or if you can't get your hands on Worbla you could try using the craft foam method: sew/glue several layers of the base form together to get the thickness, then carefully iron it on a low heat setting and bend it in shape while it's still hot/warm. It'll stay in that shape after it has cooled down (but you gotta be quick). Then cut out the swirls and glue them on the base. Then paint it etc.
Then you could use a pearl pen to make the rest of the more finer details.

The white "leggings" make me more think of rider pants actually. But unless you want to buy them rather than make them, just seek something that'll stick close to make.

I have no advices regarding cameltoe unfortunately. As to what parts are armor and what parts are cloth, I'd say none of it is armor, really. But that the grey parts are definitely somewhat rigid.

ooh I really like these. Tbh I think the silhouette is the important bit. You rarely see basketball players of that age in low-top shows anymore anyways.

I'll definitely get these if I find a nice baby blue thank you for the specific name!

Actually you're right, I agree with you there, thanks for the help!

Thanks to you both!
Does red food coloring stain? I need blood on a waistcoat as well that's a 65% Polyester/35% Rayon blend. It would be nice if I could get something washable on that.

>> No.7424356

Does your tongue turn red if you eat red candy? That's your answer. If the waistcoat is dark enough and in the same color family it might be ok, but test it first.

I'm planning to cosplay Princess Kenny from the new South Park game. How would I go about attaching the wig to the hood and getting it to stay in place?

Also, the direction I wanted to go with this cosplay to make it accurate to source was to make it look like a 9 year old boy playing dress-up - so a cheap party wig, slightly ill-fitting dress etc. I'm worried that it might just make it look like a shitty cosplay though. Any opinions?

>> No.7424972

Oh no, the more shitty the better.

Anyone who's tried sintra before know how heavy it is compared to foamcore? I need something as lightweight as foamcore but a little more durable.

Could I pull off a MGS3 era Naked Snake/Big Boss cosplay? I know I am kinda young and look even younger, but will it still be recognizeable if I do it well?

I also already have a perectly cut and fitting Olive Drab uniform laying around ( http://images.wikia.com/metalgear/images/0/0c/Olivedrab.jpg ), but I was wondering whether an uniform without camo would even be recognizeable.

>> No.7425097

I think people would know so long as you have enough props to indicate who you are. Perhaps grow out your beard a bit to get that Boss-y look. Hell, maybe even make-up on your eyebrows to make them seem more serious. Face paint if you want to go another step deeper.

Bring a box or some Big Boss prop if you're worried about being recognized (gun, fork/knife, Calorie Mate prop, a snake prop, just something) . I think you can pull it off.

>> No.7425105

I'll at least get face paint and a gun and a knife. I was thinking about a box, but I'm not sure how to transport it as long as I'm not wearing it.
Thanks for the advice.

>> No.7425109

Maybe fold it up? Though that raises the problem of how to get it stable when you need it. I'm sure it's work-aroundable but I can't think of a way right now.

But no problem, hopefully it turns out pretty good

How would I go about making a coat like this. I've no idea where to start.

>> No.7425606

Yes, cheap and ill-fitting is going to look shitty. Simplicity is what you want to aim for. Not poor quality. Kenny's poor enough already dude, don't go adding to it, you'll crush his fucking dreams.

How would I do the boots here? I was thinking about modifying some old chuck taylors, but that seems wrong...

>> No.7426454

Okay, so I'm in a bit of a hitch here;

Anime Expo is coming up soon, and my cosplay is seeming more and more unacceptable (as in simplicity) the closer it gets. Let me state two things before I begin:

1) I will be cosplaying as Kojou from Strike the Blood
2) I make lots of complicated props and projects for fun, so experience/tools/materials/etc won't be a problem for building this.
Sidenote: etsy.com/shop/keancraftworks

Now, to the point. I was wondering if it's possible, and how, to create a prop that would recreate the process of Kojou summoning a familiar.

What are the suggestions on how I am to make such a prop?

I have the options of variable EL wire, LEDs, and every other lighting source possible. If I finish it I time I can add more, but this is my main concern. Also, my plan is to have it so it turns on when I create a fist. I want to make this as neat as possible.

Help me out here guys!

>> No.7426462

I also have ribbon EL which seems better.

How do I make this chicks lower leg armor? I've made shin armor before but this armor goes all the way around the lower leg without a space in the back.

I wanted to make it with a hard material (like a thermoplastic) but I don't know how it will work 1) trying to slip it on past my heel or 2) walking with the natural contractions of the calf muscle.
