I have a picture of the skirt I made back in December. I actually went to a JoAnns and raided what was left of the fabric since it was a Christmas print. I have enough I could make a jack with it, but I'm not sure how I want to pattern it since it's a fairly busy print.

I actually think the best way is to put the fabric just on the lapels, or possibly line the jacket with it instead. An entire jacket made of this fabric seems a bit too much.

The other alternative is to make a bustier instead, so you can wear it with the skirt as a jsk.

I'll be totally honest I can't read a single bit of japanese. I'm a fairly confident sewer so I'm just using the book more as inspiration and to get the general feel of how the garment is made. Would maybe making a copy of the pattern help? You can then adjust it so that it fits you and you could take into account seam allowances. A lot of those rectangles are just ruffles so I wouldn't stress too much about them. It's the waist that you should focus on. Also is that gingham what you're using to make the piece? It's cute!

I once painted thigh highs for cosplay, won't do it again because I tried to coat the whole thing in different-coloured stripes and it came out both uneven and really scratchy. But, the colour definitely lasted. It's been through two machine washes, both not on gentle cycle, and the colours are still going strong.

Most of it depends on what fabric paint you use and how you paint it on. I used Dylon fabric paint, thinned it out with a little water so that I could work it in between the fibres. If it dries as a coating on top of the fabric it's more likely to peel off. I also did mine with the tights stretched out around a pair of mannequin legs so there would be no issue like the paint cracking when the fabric is being stretched.

I actually made that bonnet! I used two layers of a stiff, heavy interfacing fused together for the interior support.

Some people will also use a medium-weight wire (heavier than the kind in wired ribbon) sewn into the binding around the edge, like if you were making a wired headbow; that option makes it a bit easier to tweak the bonnet into a flattering shape, but can also get weird dents if you're not careful.

Looking for some suggestions on color and finishing trims for this set: I went with the dark red silk for the bows because it was the best I could find in time for the original event, but I'm not 100% thrilled with how it looks, so I'm thinking of doing a refresh by replacing them with something nicer. The pink bows look really out of place (I know, it's in the print, but). I think you're better off making the bows the same grey/black as the frills and sleeves and leaving the pink for the accessories instead.

Pic related is an alternative idea, a solid black top with nice design details, paired with tacky print skirt.

I think there's no such thing as "tacky enough to work" unless you're Meta.

>>7549726

I actually quite like this set like this. The red as an accent works pretty well to hold it together, if you replace it with white it's going to look a bit weird, the white is kind of acting like a background colour now, to bring it to the front as the accent colour would throw the balance off a bit.

I think a lighter shade of red would work, or a medium-to-darker shade of pink. I think some certain shades of orange might also work, if you can find the right shade. You should bring a bit of the salmon fabric and some white fabric along, so you can compare the accent ribbon and make sure they go together.

>> No.7550273

It all just depends on how much you want the skirt to ruffle, or how much room you want for a petticoat.

If you're looking for maximum poof, you want to make the bottom maybe 3x bigger than the top. If you're going for something more classic, make it 2-2.5x larger. I wouldn't go any less than 2x longer on bottom than top, though.

People have been saying this recently but if you only use 2 pieces then it will not look right. The angled line will always be longer than the straight which will make the skirt have points at the seam rather than lay smooth. Even if you were wanting to use more panels the bottom would need to be curved so that the distance between waistline and hem would be the same all the way around. Rectangles may not look the best in skirts, but they're a good starting spot for people who are new to sewing. Also many brands use rectangles in the patterns for their skirts.

I have made one with circle skirts and one with a rectangle before, but If you want the look of pic related you put 1-2 rectangles together to make the length of the hem. This might be more than 3 times your waist, if so multiply your waist times 3 then subtract that from the hem length the amount you have left needs to be hidden back inside the pleats. (I'll make a diagram in a second) Otherwise its like a normal pleated skirt.

Wow anon that's incredible! Seriously amazing work. I really like the dark red, I think it pops beautifully and I really wouldn't change it if I were you.

If forced to nitpick however and this is only because the overall quality is so good, I would say that the fourth red bow on the bodice is unnecessary and my eye is drawn to it because is looks uneven and off-balance compared to all the others. I honestly think it would look better with just the three, the fourth is one step too far and distracting in my opinion, it just throws off the balance and symmetry.

The second thing, and this would just be for perfection in my mind, is that I think a pleated chiffony/thin cotton finish such as you've used on the high-necked collar, would also be better in place of the lace you have used for the square collar potion of the dress. I just think it would look that much more elegant rather than 'high end costume''-like, if that makes sense? If you wanted to tie it in with the lace that you've used elsewhere, you could always add the same very end trim section of the lace, to tie it all in.

If your waist is x a normal pleated skirt would have a hemline of 3x" which isn't really enough for a petticoat. If you want the hemline at lets say 90 you will need to hide 90-3x" in your pleats. (this would be for waists 30" or smaller if your waist is 30+ use 108 36+ use 126 at least)
Now you need to decide the number of pleats. I'd use 10 because the math is easier. Each pleat will be x/10 (a in diagram) in the front. In the back of the pleat you will have (90-x)/10 (b in diagram). So you would want to mark the rectangle of fabric distance a distance b distance a etc, then mark the center of b as well.MAtch up the center of b to the ends of a on either side of it. The areas of b will overlap on the back a little. The rest is just like any other peated skirt.

I'm really lost. I don't really understand where your a's and b's on the flat fabric match up with the pleated diagram you've drawn.
Are you working in inches here? 90 inches? And when you say that you want the hemline at 90 inches, is that the hemline flat, or accounting for the ruffles/pleats? Or do you mean the vertical length of the skirt? Why is the length relevant in these measurements? And aren't pleats supposed to go at a slight angle for something like this, instead of straight down?
Are you marking the points/folds in your diagram? Are they the unmarked center line between A and the middle of B? Are you bringing A to the middle of B from the front or from the back?
Maybe if you described this for someone with a 25" waist I would be able to comprehend it a little better. Am I kind of going overboard with questions?

>Are you working in inches here? 90 inches?
Yes I'm working in inches.

>And when you say that you want the hemline at 90 inches, is that the hemline flat, or accounting for the ruffles/pleats? Or do you mean the vertical length of the skirt? Why is the length relevant in these measurements?
When the hem is circled it will have a circumference of 90 inches at the bottom, both before and after it is pleated.I'm not talking about the length.

>And aren't pleats supposed to go at a slight angle for something like this, instead of straight down?
When you iron it you make the pleats get wider as they go down, but since the waistline isn't angled the pleats wont be angled either. I dodn't use a high heat or alot of pressure when I Ironed mine so the pleats would be softer. A Petticoat will help spread them.

>Are you marking the points/folds in your diagram? Are they the unmarked center line between A and the middle of B? Are you bringing A to the middle of B from the front or from the back? Here is more detail, sorry for shitty msPaint.

so For a 25" waist with a hemline of 90" laid flat with ten pleats you have 2.5 inches per pleat in the front, in the back you have (90-25)/10 or 6.5 inches so you want to mark 2.5 inches, then 3.25 inches 3.25 inches then repeat all along the fabric, leaving seam allowances at the ends or hidden behind a pleat if you want.

I don't really understand the top two pictures. What I get from it is the width of the pleats, the length of the skirts and I guess 1/4th of the width of the ruffled skirt (for M it's 45+30 = 75cm, right?). Is there anything else I'm supposed to be getting from this?
I also can't figure out how wide the skirt portion for the pleated skirt should be. Should I just add up all the numbers for my size, multiply by four and add seam allowance?

Not sure if you know this, but those vertical dotted lines are folds. So you only need to cut a front and a back for either portion of the skirt, not 4 pieces... unless you want center seams... For the width of the skirt it appears that you do need to add the numbers.

I have an A-line skirt in the works... but I need help figuring out how to finish the waist. I don't have a separate waistband because I did not want any horizontal seams. The fabric doesn't have much body so I really need to interface the waist area. But without a waistband, how do I secure the bottom edge of the interfacing and facing? I don't want them to just flap around on the inside of the skirt...

Oh, I know. That's where you place the pattern on the fold of the fabric while cutting, right? I'm just trying to figure out if the total width makes sense.
For the pleated skirt it looks like you're supposed to cut three pieces (bottom picture) and end up with a center back seam but the photos for the ruffled skirt only show two pieces for the skirt portion.

Also could someone tell me what コンシー/レファスナー means? I know it's something about the zipper but I'm not sure what the first part means.

Super glue with hard surfaces (I just use the dollar store kind), but be sparing with super glue. Too much super glue will cause the glue to bond to glue instead of glue to object (if that makes sense) and actually weakens it. Also make sure to hold shit in place until it dries.

Seconding e6000. You really have to follow the instructions though. Leave it set for as long as possible, doing e6k the night before a con is a recipe for disaster. And putting it near a heat source (ie a radiator) helps a lot. I've found that roughening a surface before applying any kind of glue helps a lot, gives it more surface area to grab onto. Also, use rubbing alcohol to clear the area of dirt and debris.

Oh man. I started in my teens. No, wait, listen to my story -- it was a compulsory part of home ec, everybody had to sew a blouse, so the teachers gave everybody (the same) pattern, helped us cut the pattern, and showed us how to use the sewing machine. I was super afraid of the sewing machine! It ate the fabric too fast and I couldn't control it, it almost wrecked my blouse. I think I cried. In the end I handstitched my blouse, because I was much better at hand sewing than with the sewing machine.

When I actually rolled around to my twenties, I caught the DIY fever pretty bad. One of those women's magazines had a "sew your weekend wardrobe!" thing, with a blouse that's made with four different fabric (front, back, inside front, inside back) so it was four blouses in one (lolnope), and eh, stupid as it sounded, I really wanted that blouse. By this time I had a housemate with a sewing machine, so I "rented" it off her, with her on hand to show me how to thread the darn thing, I shelled out for the needle, thread, fabric and so on. And somehow it was much easier. I don't know if it had to do with the machine being much smaller than I remember it being, or if I was a lot calmer, or not having a teacher grading it helps with the stress, or whatever. It took me a lot longer to be able to handle a sewing machine with ease, but I did finish that blouse (by the way, it was a stupid idea, because the back of the blouse is a completely different print from the front, and since this was my first sewing project, you can bet I didn't think very deeply about colour-matching the two....)

tl;dr -- Failed sewing machines in my teens, finally learned how to use it in my twenties. Go on and try it, anon, you won't know whether you'll be good at it until you try it.

My grandmother showed me how to use her old school sewing machine (it can only go forward and backward but its has a petal). We made aprons and pillows and pretty much any square shaped, straight line project. I think I was in the third or fourth grade.

In the fifth grade my after school project had us make things like custom quilts and what not. We weren't allowed to use the machines but I got an idea on construction and fabric matching (quality and coloring). Because lets face it, you don't have to think about construction or multiple prints for a pillow.

A year or two ago I finally bought my own sewing machine during the black Friday online sales. I had practiced and got slightly familiar with my machine but I haven't had the chance for any projects other than basic repairs. I wouldn't say I'm good, but I'm not bad either. I know basic things and since I suck at sewing in a straight line (it bothers me if its not store bought straight) I find ways to hide mistakes to make it look as professional looking as possible. lol this is actually why I'm not improving, I get frustrated when its not perfect and stop for a bit.

IMO I think your skill depends on your dedication to your craft. I know I could become better if I focused on my projects more and accepted the fact that I'm not going to have either of my grandmothers sewing skills until I have more practice. No one is perfect when just starting but if you continue regularly you can improve. So don't think you're too old, I'm 21 now and I still consider myself a noob.

Also, it shouldn't take you nearly as long as it's taken me, there was a lot of time I didn't do anything with it.

I think you could go for it only if you have the skills, time and resources for it. Otherwise, it can be a tad frustrating when you can envision the perfect blouse but don't have the skills to make it, or the time to sit down and sew it.

If you have yet to learn how to make them, you kind of have to accept that your first few tries might not be completely perfect.

You're also limited by what kind of fabric you can find, so if you like border prints, you're kind of limited to either quilting-weight cotton or spoonflower. Chiffon with cute or interesting loliable prints are pretty hard to find as well.

The organic cotton sateen is the best quality in my experience, but it's also pretty pricey, and blacks come out as more of a charcoal shade. The colours and flowers are nice, but my liking it stops there.
Was this your first handmade bonnet? Not being a catty bitch, I just want to give you some genuine con-crit, and show you where you need to improve.
Starting with the brim -
Your brim shape is nice, solid and looks great.
The lace braid on the front looks way over-sized and takes away from the overall design imo.
The card motifs don't curve around nicely to match the brim, and looks unbalanced and out of place. I'm not sure if you bought the fabric like that or added the motifs on yourself. If you bought the fabric like that, perhaps you should have cut the fabric into panels and sewn them together to created a uniform curve.
The fabric gathering on the back of the bonnet is messy and uneven. Both the brim covering and the ruffle.
The roses you have used look gorgeous.

The base -
The shape is wonky and it looks really bad.
The fabric you have covered it in is ill fitting and looks extremely messy and half-assed.
The sheer gathered fabric on the inside of the base, again, looks messy, and as if you were trying to hide an ugly seam.
Lastly it is your choice to use elastic, although I think it looks tacky and lazy.
I'm not sure if it is just the way it's sitting in the middle image, but if you are going to have elastic, make sure it isn't twisted when sewing it.
Perhaps also consider sewing a casing for it.

Do you sell these? I have a feeling I've seen it before.

I really hope you take this advice and produce something even better. Good luck anon!

So I want to reconstruct this old-school Metamorphose dress to make it more less dated.
What I'm thinking of doing first is taking out the front lacing and putting 3 small white bows made from satin ribbon down the front.
I'm also planning cutting off the bell potion of the sleeve (as it is the most dated aspect of the dress) and putting the lace trim on the edge of the remaining sleeve that's gathered on the mid-arm. The dress is really old Metamorphose, so the lace isn't that great of quality (I wouldn't even be keeping it, but it was my first dress so it has sentimental value). On the tag it says 100% cotton in Japanese, but some of the lace is clearly not. Specifically the lace on the bodice and above the cotton lace on the princess sleeve. There's no real way to take off the cheaper stuff without damaging the dress as some of it has been sewn right on top of the seams in most places and unpicking it would be a nightmare.

I've considered cutting them off and just making them a bit smaller or only using half the fabric to keep the princess sleeve, but with the peter-pan collar it looks a bit overwhelming on me. Taking the sleeve up would make it more balanced. Also, the bows would be of similar ribbon as the ribbons already on there, just made from thicker ribbon. Pretty sure they don't. You'd need to use a forwarding service or SS.

I bought one, chopped it up and am ready to edit the straw hat, but to be honest it may be too floppy of a base?

Is there any chance of these selling out? I know Vol. 1 can be hard to find because it went out of print, but does that happen with all issues? I really want Vol.5 but probably won't be able to buy it until late August.

has anyone used kona cotton for lolita crafts? if so, how's the quality? is it decent enough for blouses and such? if not, what fabric would you recommend?

on an other note, would people be interested in DIY lolita packs with pre-cut and pre-serged parts? with instructions ofcourse.
