Well I suspect that this thread is going to focus on the guys. I mean, it is a crossdressing thread. I'm not sure on the exact ratio, females more often cosplay to begin with, so at any given con you're more likely to encounter more female touhous.

For example, in this pic the Mokou, Parsee, Prismriver, Kogasa, Hina, Murasa, and Marisa are guys (that Nue is Marisa's mum, it was a bit awkward but all for fun I guess). The rest of them are all female. I agree there's loads more crossdressers compared to other franchises, but I'd still wager there's more females than males. Well it was to be expected for an all-female cast

It's just foundation, eyeshadow, eyeliner, fake eyelashes, and blush. If their face is more masculine you might have to use some contouring to smooth things out a bit though. Unfortunately genetics plays the biggest part.

The hoop is quite bad. For A-line poof I would recommend grabbing a square dance petticoat off eBay, if you filter by price you can find some cheap ones. If you want to keep the hoop and don't mind a more bell-shaped silhouette, search for a "no-sew tutu" tutorial to make a petticoat that will obscure the hoop some.
To secure the bow, anchor it to the scalp of your wig rather than the hair. Safety-pin it to the back while it's off your head so you can look at the inside seams to center it properly.

Hey thanks for the tip! I've tried it with a big safety pin, but it stands out a bit.. The gardening wire I have is green-coloured, I'll look for some black-wire in the garden shop, otherwise I'll keep the safety pin on there (it's surprisingly strong and rigid)

Here goes nothing.

Things I noticed / improvements for future crossplay:
Stylize my hair in a way that it covers my forehead more, or get a wig with long enough bangs in the front.
Fix eyebrows. It's not as bad in this image like in other ones, but they tend to be my most obvious giveaway. As I cannot trim them at the moment, I should look up on ways to just hide them instead. I need new glasses anyway, maybe something with a thicker frame would work?
Learn how to contour: I don't much of a manjaw as many others do, but it is still obvious from certain angles and I want to learn to hide it better while preserving a natural look.
Eyeliner can be done in various ways, I should work on making my eyes pop out more without looking too ott.
Lastly, open a maid tech repair shop for /g/entlemen.

Contouring really is magic. I've learned a little about it over the last year and it's made a huge difference my passing ability. Just make sure you start with as little as possible. It's easy to get carried away with the highlighter/bronzer/concealer.

The way i understand it. the glasses cast a shadow over your face and if your eyeliner is too thick it may cause your eyes to look too dark and even sunken in. Maybe you might want to trim down the sections of the wig you attach those to? Then position the red hairbands slightly higher? Might help. The straight edge of the wig past your face probably lengthens the face so at least shortening it will make it frame your face a little better.

I like it! Try drawing some contour lines down to the neck area and blending it in. Straight black wigs don't frame necks very well so you might need to blend it away abit so it doesn't look thick.
The way I look at it. If you are a straight guy, you would probably gravitate towards liking female characters? Cosplaying it is a natural extension of that I suppose. Effort and attention to detail are not exclusive to crossplaying so you try to do your best in portraying the character.

Taobao is actually great for starting out. Just make sure you check the general ratings associated with the stores you buy from and get someone to translate/read the reviews of customers. The biggest danger is a miscommunication in sizing and etc but that can be handled by a trip to your local tailor or even a few safety pins. Good luck on your Nitori!

Cosplay suits are usually not expensive, but tailoring custom stuff and shipping can take upwards of a month or a month and a half. So it really sucks when a costume is delivered that is too small. You can fix too big with a safety pin, but you can't fix too small. So please take some time to properly measure yourself and your own clothing to make sure you order the right (custom) sizing. Tight-fitting (not skin tight) clothes are great for emphasizing a feminine character, even in males.

The CosMate+ store in Akihabara is nice because because they have a broad range of sizes, unlike MiaCos which generally just has medium and big:

I took a couple classes of Japanese at community college. Given enough time with a dictionary and google translate you can figure out what's going on these pages. Eventually you start to notice that セーラー服 and 制服 mean "uniform".

While crossplay isn't exactly new, most of my experiences with the phenomenon are guys cosplaying as female characters for trolling purposes (i.e. Man Faye). I've had to get 2 things altered so far because I'm too tall. Being 5'10 means that unadjustable straps are always too short so the waist ends up sitting on my ribcage. Went pretty well, just make sure you find a good tailor. Also straps are probably the easiest thing to alter so if that's what you're talking about it should be no problem.

Dude with red Reimu here. Honestly most important part is make up. If you want to pass make up is just magic that makes most of work. I'd rather have worse costume and better make up than other way around. I understand it can be hard to learn it because you can't daily practice like girls can but still if you have free day try to dress up, look some tutorials up (as someone mentioned drag queen make up tutorials can be useful they are pretty good for learning contouring and basics just keep it "lighter" because they are massively overdoing it) and try it or get some female friend to help you with that (which I prefer because I still suck at it).
