I agree that there is a theme, but I'm going to have to disagree on the "valiant effort" bit. There's just too much going on here, from the mismatched crown/bag/shoes to the multi-colored wig. When you're working with a dress that has a super loud print, the last thing you want to do is pile on extra colors/printed tights/a pastel wig. It's just too much and it actually can hurt to look at.

Plus sized yes, but the girl is clearly morbidly obese. It may have been a misguided attempt to be helpful but they probably didn't know what else to tell her. There may have been something fully shirred that would "fit" her but there wouldn't be enough material in the skirt to give the proper shape and it would look bad.
I think she just didn't like what they had to say so she took it personally and time went on the story got more exaggerated in her mind. She said on her tumblr that the staff called her "bad names". Come on now.

Regardless, it's not their job to judge, it's their job to sell clothes and serve customers who want to give them their money. If they were actually knowledgeable about the place where they are employed, they would have known about the possibility of things like dress altering. They shouldn't reject a financial opportunity for THEIR business just because she's bigger.

You can't really alter a dress to be bigger unless you tell her to buy two and sew them together. Now that would have been rude. (I am aware that there are ways you can make dresses bigger in the back with adding material from waist ties but that probably wouldn't have worked in her case since she's so large.)

Anyway, the Torrid comment aside, it's really bold of her to claim that the staff called her "bad names". If that happened I feel like legal action could have been taken and the shop girl would have been in serious trouble. I'm pretty sure they know better than to do that.

Well it is, because they're assuming that she won't buy the dress just because it won't fit.

I work in fashion retail and I sell dresses too big and too small for people all the time. It's not my business to stop them, or tell them where they should be shopping (lol @ Torrid as their brilliant suggestion).

I mean, in general customer service isn't hard at all. I've spent way too many years in retail and people will get kind of annoyed if you dont have exactly what they want but GENERALLY you can sell them things that can pair with what they are into.

I mean, especially when it comes to lolita. It's a very niche fashion and this girl (regardless of her size) is interested in it. Being nice and showing them around and suggesting accessories will most likely result in a sale if she was already looking to purchase something far more expensive like a dress.

I don't blame them for directing her to another store, I doubt her mom would have spent money on asseriories only. It's better for them to send her somewhere where she can get her money's worth.
I've had it done to me. It's either another one of their own stores or some place similar. It happens, it's not bad business.
It's like forcing a customer to stay and eat at restaurant that doesn't support their dietary needs.

This. ESPECIALLY if you are only a sales associate and don't have the authority to suggest to someone that they find someplace else to shop. Even on a management level you'd NEVER do that because you could get into deep shit with the district if the customer files a formal complaint.

Maybe in Japanese fashion stores they can get away with those attitudes because body shaming is part of their 'culture,' but I witnessed a girl almost get fired for saying something similar.
When I worked at a Michael Kors store a coworker got severely reprimanded after she talked down to this lady who was asking if we carried boots for bigger calves. Turns out the customer actually had oedema from a medical condition and didn't quite like how it was insinuated by the associate that she couldn't fit the boots because she must be too fat for them.
I just don't get how people have the audacity to assume things like that, all I know is that I'd feel ashamed.

I went into a slightly higher end ( I.e $100-$300) mall shoe store and then a Zara looking like crap because I was tired and just randomly felt like going to the mall. The staff in both places ignored me completely. Zara was worse though since the staff actually gave me stink eye, the manager followed me into the change room, looked me up and down, made sure I brought in the amount I said I did, and basically snatched them right out of my hands as I was putting them away ( everything was too big)

A lot of stores are full of snobby bitches who will look up and down at you if you're not dressed a certain way.

My sister-in-law got an attitude from two workers at an Armani booth because she was wearing sweatpants.

I also got a snarky attitude from a woman at a booth at the mall, and I wasn't even there to shop, it was my mom, all because I was wearing a hoodie and Converse, as well as getting terrible customer service from a woman years ago when I went to repair my watch just because she didn't like how we looked, despite it being a designer watch.

I've gone to boutiques like Carolina Herrera, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Christian Dior, and the attitude -does- change depending on how you look, you know why? Because fashion isn't about inner beauty.

They aren't selling you feelings, they're selling you clothing, and certain kinds of clothing, whether or not you like it, don't fit you.

You want lolita clothes? Find clothes from brands that actually fit you.

I am not saying that it's a nice experience to be bitched at or to have employees giving you an attitude or treating you like you're some sort of delinquent, but it is also true that some customers are a pain in the ass. But like you said, we don't know and this has been going on for longer than it should

I'm not in any way trying to invalidate what you're saying because this post is spot on and definitely reflects the overall attitude of the fashion community, I just wanted to add that I work in retail for a luxury fashion brand and that our company works really hard to discourage this sort of judgmental attitude in its associates. They really drill it into your head that you have no idea what kind of money someone has simply based on how their dressed and it's a really big deal for us.
I also personally do try to sell good feelings alongside luxury items, because that's what will build both a good overall reputation for the brand and good clientele, which inevitably turns into more sales. It's clear to see how a few bad or misinterpreted situations can harm a brand's image, and even if it doesn't shut them down I still don't think a niche brand like Baby can really afford to have less-than-friendly shop girls. If I were in their position, I'd see an overweight girl coming in the store as an opportunity to sell accessories, bags, and other things that aren't exclusive because of size. Not to mention, an overweight customer almost always has the potential to lose weight and I'd like to be able to sell her a dress later on down the road if she does; there's no sense in turning away a potential customer just because she can't make a purchase that day.
Sorry for the small rant, I'm really passionate about sales and making people feel good about what they buy.

It just sometimes frustrates me because some brands aren't friendly or just they don't give a shit about sales because they already make a lot of money and they know it, so I don't really see the point of some people being all up in arms about it because at the end of the day they won't care.

I have encountered a lot of snobby employees thinking they know more about you about fashion simply because of how you're dressed. It hasn't been until I show I actually know what I'm talking about and I deliberately dressed like shit because I felt lazy that they tone down the attitude and are polite. It really just depends on the brand, and the kind of clients they attract.

For example the ladies at Chanel are always nice, eager to help, and friendly, but Armani is a different thing and well idgaf about that one, I hate that brand anyway. I was also a fatty, so I also got my cut of snarky attitude and people looking up and down at me and yeah, that makes you feel shitty, but either you complain about it or ignore them and do your thing.

I was going to comment about how I don't see why it's a big deal but I don't think that would go over very well in rufflechat. People get so butthurt over someone liking or not liking their fucking dress of all things. Also I love how she's trying to make it personal with "I think I know who posted it!" even though it was posted publicly and lots of people agree it's bad, not to mention all sorts of girls are posted here, and usually people make a note if they have some connections to the person.

Whereas my experience with AP employees at cons has only been positive. They really don't care if you're in normalfag clothes or head to toe AP--they'll try to get you to make a sale.
