you can just mix and match items with otome and gyaru. Axes Femme and Amaval items are easy to use between brands.
The bag in the pic looks like it could work, but with any other item it depends on the rest of the outfit. For otome, you typically look at the bag as a way to make the outfit more quirky.

Yeah of course. I wear lolita dresses to work all the time in a more otome way.

I wear IW chocolate fountain with a red sweater and some flat shoes and call it a day. Basically, if it looks good as otome (and you call it otome) you'll be fine.

I could seem some girls getting uppity if you styled a lolita dress as otome without a blouse and so on and then called it lolita.

I think it's because it's a lot easier to pass it off as generically cute normalfag clothing. Also, lolita is a bit of a commitment in that it's not something you can slap on and rush out of the house, whereas otome, if you have enough pieces, you can get away with that because it's a lot less "I bought these specific shoes for this specific outfit and these tights can only be worn with these three dresses."

Can't speak for anyone else, but for me, and another lolita I spoke to, I'm getting older, trying to focus on my career, so I don't have much time to go all out dressing up. The only reason I can justify spending such ridiculous amount on frilly japanese dresses is if I can wear them more casually. Otome is very close to my daily, girly style, and I prefer the quirkyness over the matchy-matchy ness that's so prevalent in lolita.

>> No.8232570

Otome makes me feel more comfortable, both in the 'not having to be that frilly weirdo' sense and in terms of physical comfort. I don't have to spend as long getting ready or be as fussy with how matchy my outfits are. Not to mention lots of pieces are much cheaper than lolita second hand so I don't feel so precious about wearing them.
Also otome doesn't have as many politics as lolita, which makes wearing it more fun.

This, i feel this is a legit reason to why a lot of people look into otome. Even the girls who wear the 'holy bible' of otome, Jane Marple, are not stuck up brand whores like some AP ladies.

Also you'll find for the same price as AP, alot of otome brands are 'made in japan'.

In the end, Otome = Easily, fun colours, simple.... and you actually get your monies worth out of an item since you'll prob wear it more than once.

>> No.8232939

>>8232929
Along that line of thought, otome pieces are easier to incorporate into non-otome outfits. I wore a JM skirt last week with a turtleneck and flats to a family event. Everyone loved it, and I felt like I got some use out of my expensive j-fash items. I just have trouble seeing the value of building a whole wardrobe you never wear.

>> No.8233024

>>8231684
Basically what everyone else has already said.

I've moved onto otome although I'm still holding onto a majority of my lolita items that fit my style. I used to admire those that wore Jane Marple but I could never afford it; now that I have a decent paying job and I've moved in with my boyfriend, I finally have the funds to buy the more expensive brands firsthand.

Also, otome is definitely more practical without bordering costume territory to normalfags. There's less weird accessories (plastic jewelry, headpieces shaped in animals/desserts/veils), less "rules" (nobody bitches at you for not wearing a wig or your skirt being too short/not poofy enough), and more freedom to mix and match themes/colors. I wear it to work so I'm getting more uses out of the dresses instead of having them sit in my closet for months untouched.

I've also grown tired from the lolita community and keeping up with the latest updates.... AP was my first love and I'll always have a soft spot for them. I'm getting older but I don't want to move onto classic like most lolitas do when they outgrow sweet, so I've settled with a more mature version of sweet lolita in otome. I'm going to be wearing cakes and chocolate until I die, thank you very much.

If you want to get into otome, it's a lot more than putting a cute dress on. Pic related is just literally putting cute things on, and doing nothing in the way of coordination, makeup, or hair. It looks terrible.

Otome is a weird balance of looking effortlessly put together. I think it's actually harder than lolita, where guidelines generally steer you in the right direction. Otome on the other hand is a feeling. While you don't need to look regimented and have to worry about different shades of pinks, you do need to pay very close attention to details that make or break the coordinate. I don't think a lot of newbies get this, and that's why so many 'otome' coordinates are so fucking blah.

You also need to look well groomed as well. Put on some makeup, comb your hair and do whatever to make it look presentable, or else you'll look way too casual even for otome and you'll get washed out by your clothes.

Anyways, welcome to otome. And just remember, these are tips to look good - if you just want to enjoy it, you don't have to do all that, but keep in mind if you post you always run the chance of getting criticized.

Also be honest with me, I've been looking into fully shirred/elastic waisted skirts from JM, ETC, and Leur. With an 88 cm waist could those work for me or should I save my money? I don't expect to fit into any brand ops or jsks, but I'd love to buy some form of brand!

Please help me shop, I'm bad at making decisions. About to make a closet child order but I'm having a toss up between two cardis and dresses. Max is 20000 and I want some warm stuff since I melted my favourite jacket cooking. I'd love the AP chocolate coat but I'd want the macaron dress to go with it, and since there are so many on the site I could probably get it at a later date without worrying about it selling out. Stuff isn't necessarily to go with the specific dresses but I think the red cardigan and red riding hood dress could be cute together. Both would fit fine in my wardrobe, empire waists look good on me.
Not sure if this is something more for the coord help thread but since it's not making a coord...

Personally I'd get the red riding hood dress with the red cardi + the white jacket. That way I get pink, red and white coloured items instead of all pink.
That's the way I shop anyway, I try to get items in other colours instead of sticking to just one.
Aesthetically tho, I'd get the pink jacket. I don't mind the white, but pink has more structure... but if white is cheaper, I'd still get that one.

You would fit into JM skirts with fully elasticized waists, but not any of the other waist styles, but I don't know if they'd be comfortable. Also, the skirts JM release with fully elasticized waists are most often calf length, so that may not work for you either. JM fully elasticized 'mini' length skirts would fit very short on you, which you also may or may not be comfortable with.

ETC skirts with fully elasticized waistbands would have the same issues as JM minis - they'd sit really short on you. I have the ETC Rabbit Ballerina skirt pictured up-thread and the fit on me is short enough to make me feel uncomfortable, and that's with a 58cm waist. I have a long torso though, which makes my fit issues worse. If you have a short torso you may be able to make the minis work for you.

Maybe try to find whatever JM skirt length you'd be interested in on auctions and just give it a try? Don't buy new until you know they work for you though, because JM items don't hold their value in the Western second hand market so you can't count on selling items that don't work for you. Also, try to aim for items from JM's 'Dans le Salon' line if you can, because the fit on them is a bit bigger.

>> No.8238546

You're wonderful, thanks for the honest advice!! I was looking at older used stuff on a rakuten shop called Grand Bazaar, their pricing seemed very reasonable, so I'll grab one or two "tester" skirts from there.
Also yeah I saw the Salon label on stuff, what is that exactly??

>> No.8238604

>>8238546

No problem - I'm glad I was able to help you out! My wardrobe can essentially be divided into 'Jane Marple skirts' and 'other' so if you have any questions about specific prints or fits I may be able to answer them.

Grand Bazaar is great for second hand JM and their pricing is very reasonable - picking up some tester skirts from them sounds like a good approach.

Also, one good thing about JM is that they are very consistent in their sizing - if you fit in a fully elasticized skirt from them and you like the way it looks on you, you can feel pretty confident that any other skirts in the same style they release in the future will be fine as well. Watch out for skirts that have solid waistbands in the front and elastic at the back though - the back elastic tends to bunch up and the whole thing sits awkwardly. They don't seem to release many skirts in that style though, so they're easy to avoid.

Dans le Salon is JM's diffusion line aimed more at a slightly older, more mature clientele, so the clothes are a bit more appropriate for everyday wear and work situations. Because the line is aimed at a slightly older clientele, the cuts of the pieces and the sizing is a bit more flexible.

Can you give me the average length of the JM mini skirts? And the ETC ones? Also do you think a laceyunderskirt type thing a few inches longer work under them?

>> No.8239364

I think i should buy ETC shit rather than AP, also otome could be worn without petti and no problems about unmatching shades of pink, red, whatever. Please can i have more country themed, red or pink ETC coordinates? I'm planning to have a country otome theme in my wardrobe because i don't look good in browns, tans and dusty colors. Also, normalfag flats are ok into otome fashion? I have some pastel warm pink ones that i think would fit.

Hey, sorry for the wait - I thought that taking some photos for you would be the most helpful approach, so I needed a bit more time to get that done.

First, JM gathered minis that look like this (pic) are 45cm long. They're pretty ubiquitous, and there will generally be one available for each print. However, JM will often turn an all-over print into a border print when it comes to these guys, so make sure you know how they're doing the print before you buy.

Second, for the sake of comparison, are some medium skirts. The Strawberry Label skirt is a 'Midi' skirt and is 57cm long. I'm 164cm tall and it hits me right below the knee. This length isn't typical, and it doesn't pop up much. The Royal Order skirt, at 64cm, is JM's typical length for their medium/long skirts, and these ones are calf length on me.

Last, the ETC mini I mentioned vs a Dans le Salon mini. Apart from Rabbit Ballerina print I only have ETC fixed waist skirts in my wardrobe these days, so I didn't really have anything else to compare it to. The ETC is 43cm long, while the DLS mini is 50cm.

Generally anything JM marks as 'mini' will be 44.5 - 47cm long, while the next shortest length will be 50 - 54cm long. I don't have much experience with underskirts, but if it's something pretty in a matching colour then I don't see why it wouldn't work. There's just as much material in most JM skirts as there is in a J et J or IW skirt, so it wouldn't be a volume issue.

If you're buying second hand it can be really hand to tell, unfortunately. The swing tags are different, so if an item is NWT you can see what line it's from (DLS on the right). But otherwise you need to check out the preview and collection books on the JM website before the collections for each season release, because that's pretty much the only place that JM vs DLS is clearly marked.

That's a lovely choice anon - JM's greens and navy blues are gorgeous in person and I credit them with curing me of my addiction to all black everything.

You are such a sweetheart anon this is all so helpful for me!! I feel like the JM minis seem safe, the ETC minis look dangerous without an underskirt, midis would be nice, and the longer skirts are probably too long for my tastes.
I can easily make myself some coordinating underskirts as needed. I plan on sewing a lot of stuff for otome since I won't fit a lot of brand. (So far I've just made an OP, but I've got fabric for two more OPs and a skirt!)

I really like Otome, but moreso because if played right it has a unique and delicate silhouette. To say you just like it because 'omg it has biscuits on it i am so fat i need food even on my clothes' is fucking retarded. Some of the prints are repetitive and downright boring. I'm so torn now, do I preorder this, or spend money on fabric for making more of my own stuff?? (I'm the fatty chan who's been asking for advice, if that helps. The dress would definitely fit me)

Hey, in case you're still around, the ribbon embellishment on the cardigan ends at the seams on top of the shoulders on either side. Hopefully I'm explaining that ok. Decoration on ETC cardigans is generally only on the front.

Does anyone have a taobao link to this exact fabric? I think I saw it there once (or something very similar), but I forgot to save the link.

depends on how frquently you want to wear otome, and also how much you (honestly) want to get recognized online for it. if you want to wear otome daily, spending money on more things to flesh out your wardrobe might be a good idea. if you want online popularity, brand might be a better fit.

also, otome brands don't resale as well, but you will more likely get back at least some of your money for brand (unlike homemade things)

otherwise it's up to you

Luckily this is a literal knockoff of Jane Marple's Strawberry Label dress and you can buy that instead.

Ahh I'm interested in otome as a daily style! If I get recognized that would be neat but I'm really just trying to have fun and dress cutely everyday! I've had a rough year off of college, and I'm going back in fall so I'm excited to put together an outfit everyday.
I don't quite get owning brand for the sake of brand? The brand pieces I admire/want have unique prints or construction. I adore the fabric on the Rococo dress which is why I was considering it!
Also I'm buying/making pieces I want to wear/keep, I don't really have the investment menality, though I understand.

Thank you for giving me pros and cons. I'm more iffy on the dress now hearing that the fabric may? be on taobao.

It's not exactly a print knockoff though. She just found similar fabric from Yuwa and made a similar JSK. Maybe in design, but come on, simple A-line dresses are a dime a dozen these days.

It's just a similar fabric, the cut is completely generic.

All right, I know this will probably be controversial but I'll give it a shot. Does anyone have examples of men wearing this? Could it look good at all? And I don't mean femboys, otherwise masculine men but just in this style of clothing. Or is there a masculine counterpart similar to lolita and ouji?
