I'm terrible at constructive criticism but I will try my best...
Personally I think the one on the left is better, simply because the font and stroke you used for the English version is just really unappealing. It looks very "7th grader." Also maybe instead of centering the text at the top you could make it go behind the guy as well (idk).

That being said, I think your drawing could use a little bit more work as well. You might want to make some aspects of your drawing a bit bolder, maybe make some lines thicker, add additional shading, etc. This kind of looks like a regular sketch with some blue background thrown in. Additionally, I'm no anatomy expert, but his shoulders are too straight/square (actually, his pose in general is just really stiff), his torso a bit too long, and the right portion of his hair makes it seem like his head is lopsided.

I hope I wasn't too mean. Keep working at it!

I think these would do better as stickers or charms than a pattern. Also the one to the left look like a cat. The sparkles really ruin it for me. Alright! I wasnt sure what pattern to put in the background, so I picked a random default stamp in the program.

Yeah, I have had a tablet for maybe three days now (just used a mouse before) and I'm having trouble with lines because of the pressure sensitivity. I'll see if I can turn it off for drawings like this. Thicker, even lines would be better maybe? And originally I had them in black, but do you think this brown looks less harsh? I have a dumb photoshop question I'm hoping someone can help me with.

Basically I want to make a lace brush set that will continue without overlapping, what do I need to set the brush options at (scattering, dynamics, etc)?

Is this the way I would make a round lace thing? I'm assuming you make the repeating brush and then use the pen tool to stroke an oval shape. Or is there some other crazy wizardry to do this.

>> No.8324943

>>8324922
You gotta change the "spacing" in the brush setting, should be in the same tab as "hardness". Then you need to turn on "brush projection" in another tab, forgot which one and it should stay on one side of your brush as you draw. If you want it to be around a specific shape then a path might work better but it'll have weirdo gaps because of the initial image youre using.

>> No.8325011

>>8324943

Thank you! I was being really dumb finding the spacing but I finally found it. I dont think I have a brush projection option since I'm using a dinosaur of Photoshop (cs2).

I also have Manga Studio 5 and Sai if you have any other tips to achieve this look. I just thought it would be easiest in ps.

>> No.8325041

>>8325011
Diff anon. I use cs2 as well, spacing should do it. If not, you might just have to make a big brush or a repeating pattern. But I'm not sure how it's going to work around around a cameo. I think it might end up either doing some strange sunburst thing, or you're not going to get the lace going in the same direction all the way around. I feel like this is one of those weird things where hand drawing and tracing it is probably ultimately going to look the best, as tedious as it sounds.

Complete newb to AA's here, I just found out I'll have a table at a smallish (1k or so) con at the end of summer and I'm kind of just overwhelmed at this point.

My art style's kinda generic and I can't draw chibis at all so I'm thinking of just doing A4 prints? Do prints do better if they have more characters in them or should I just stick with 1-2 characters like I'm used to? Also do you think 10 copies per print should be enough for a small con or should I bring more?

Sorry for all the questions and thanks in advance!

Completely agree with the first reply. I like the simplicity of your design, specifically the left one, but your general style is like an odd mix of animu and western comics. Are you torn right now as to where you wanna be as an artist?

Here are some areas that need fixing: shoulders, arm length, stiff pose, the tucked in shirt makes it look like he has a belly due to how the lines are drawn, and especially that face/expression. The top of his head is also very flat and looks caved in.

>>8323611

DON'T DO THE TEXT. I'm always bothered by text (typed, handwritten is ok) in patterns/prints because it just looks like lazy filler. Are you following a template or using existing images/art as reference for your puppy poses? They all look like they could be potentially better but right now it just looks as though they were directly from those doll bases from DA. Maybe have some of the dogs actually looking at the viewer.

I like the bottom left. But they are cat dogs.

>>8325052
Your art looks visually appealing but looking at it closer, there's a lot of flaws. The hand on his chest looks a bit awkward right now. Try posing in the mirror like him and see how your hand rests. The right arm (our right) also looks like it's extended too far out from his body. Bring it in a bit, his shoulders look incredibly wide right now.

If you can make characters interact well within one piece, then do it. But if not, don't. Focus on what you're used to for now, see how that does, then experiment gradually. Maybe do one piece with multiple characters and see how you (and customers) like it.

10 copies is okay.

Now that I think about it, I don't know if having the text go behind him will look very good, so scratch that lol...I was thinking of something to make the text look more...impactful? Since I assume that's what you're going for with those words haha.

Anyway, postcards don't always equate to simplicity! Don't trick yourself!

About his hair/head in general, I think you could actually make his head/hair less wide (so his hair doesn't look so poofy). I don't know if you're going for that bishounen look, but you could also thicken his eyebrows, and maybe round out his face a bit so it's not so angular and typical "how-to-draw-anime-by-john-brown" styled (lol idek if that makes sense). Also, I think his nose, or at least the nose bridge, could be scooted to the right as well.

Some rubber blocks in Japan have a thin colored layer so you can have smooth lines. With the Western brand stuff, just stain the rubber with ink and clean the excess off before you transfer your image. As for the cutting part, I just use my exacto to stab along my outlines before cutting over them (sorry, I don't know how to explain this part in words), then I make really shallow cuts with the carving knife.
I hope this helps and feel free to ask for more tips.

I'm kind of on a similar boat here so seeing her leaving makes me feel uneasy...
What do you have to keep to be able to survive in the art field? From what I see on her tumblr, I think she's very good at what she draws but grew too comfortable in it? Maybe because her work lacks the mainstream appeal? Lack of proper connection?

I'm friend with lots of students who are studying in illustration, and a few of them are pretty popular on social media. How much does social media popularity guarantee your future prospect though? Does "following the tumblr aesthetic" really benefit an artist?

>> No.8329418

Yeah, same. We're pretty good friends so I want to ask her in person, but after reading that post, I'm also feeling a little uneasy considering she's worked like a million times harder at it than I ever have (I have a different day job, to be fair, but doing art seriously for a career was definitely on my itinerary somewhere).

I'm thinking about some of my other artist friends who do it as a career and I feel like the biggest difference is that she was more of a freelancer while some of my other friends have like actual employment in companies. A couple of my friends do art for Gaia, for example. Some others are in animation studios, video game studios, etc. Maybe it depends on how you want to make your living from art and freelancing wasn't really cutting it for her. I always thought she made enough at cons but... maybe not?

>> No.8329429

I think that her case is a good example of being complacent. She definitely has skill but she hasn't been marketing herself well. To get anywhere in the art field, networking and knowing the right people is key. I notice that in emi's case, outside the AA network, she barely networks with other artists in the industry she wants to break into.

As for popularity on social media, a lot of younger, up and coming artists confuse popularity with success. I think success is what you make it out to be. People like swoozie, and domics make a pretty kush living but they put out content on a daily.

This is a really interesting topic and I really want to hear input from all artists,

how do you define success? What is "making it" for you?

This seems little, but getting back into artist alley would be a success in my eyes. I did a booth (first time) about three or four years ago, and I loved the hell out of it even though I had pretty much no prints (it was mostly commission work at a tiny con, heck i made a profit though). I wanted to get back in again, this time with prints and the whole nine yards, but I never felt too confident in my own coloring/lineart, therefore going stale for a long ass time.
I kicked that bad mindset to the curb recently this year, so now I'm working on setting up an online store and getting a presence so my 'making it' would to be for people to know and see my artwork and enjoy it. (pic related, what I’m working on now)

Hmm. Well I've been thinking about getting a table, but man do I have a strange talent/art skill. Would a cookie table totally bomb or be interesting at a con? I've seen one before at ComicCon NY and it was aaawful. They made some big ass cookie cake thing with a really shitty Sailor Moon Luna on it, and they charged like 50 bucks for it, and needless to say, after three days, it was still there. They had some "home baked" bread too, and I didn't see people look too interested. They had a Deadpool hand out free samples of the cookies and nobody really took any from him. I did, (I'm brave, I know) and they tasted...ok. Nothing awesome. So I thought, shit man, I could do a WAY better job.

It would be cool, but there are a lot of restrictions with selling food. Business wise you usually need some sort of food handling license (depending on your location) and other food-safety compliance things. I'm not sure how food works at cons. I've seen lots of tables sell pockey and those little panda cookies from H-Mart. Maybe it's different if it's not a per-packaged officially? You guys are giving me a lot to think about. Hmmmm...yesss.

As for making them, it's all just a matter of having a steady hand, a looooot of patience, and going through hundreds of trail and error runs. I eyeball a drawing I like and then sketch it out with an edible pencil on cookie sheets. Then cut it out and use a very fine blade to trace it ontop of cookie dough. Then the decorating comes and I spend hours on mixing colors and messing around with thickness of icing and whatever else. It can honestly take almost a whole day to make one because of all the drying and glossing you have to do. Having a cookie cutter made would cute the pipeline time down by a lot I feel, but on the other hand, I never do the same shape twice. It's always fun to try something new.

Having made decorative sugar cookies before, I don't think you can break even on labor unless you have some kind of automated/faster way of decorating.

You can DEFINITELY sell them for $5-7 as mentioned, but I don't know how many you'd have to make at a time to actually break even on labor. I remember it would take me entire afternoons or nights just to get a small (12-24) batch of crappy cookies with simple designs and maybe 3 colors max.

I can't imagine an entire array of them D: Like i really love your work, and if you want to sell just to have fun and show people your work as a hobby by all means DO IT! It'll be really fun and rewarding!

Profitability wise though, I don't know. There's a reason why mass marketed cookies either look crappy or have designs that any one can do very quickly (1-2 color geometric flood fills and simple swirls or sprinkles etc)

What about sharing a table with someone at a con? That way you can make like 10 of these super detailed things and if you sell them at 10$, you'll make back what you got for the table. This will give you more photos for later projects (like that cookie cookbook idea which I dig, and would buy for nerd sake) and maybe get your name out there a little? At smaller cons I feel like you'll sell these things like hot-cakes. See what I did there? I used to work at a bakery doing the fondant work so i think i have a few tips that might help your process! draw out the designs you want to make and print them onto regular printer paper, from there you can use that as your stencil. cutting the designs out and adhering them slightly to the cookie dough with a bit of grease lets you easily cut around the outer edge of the design. we did it all the time when people wanted shapes we didnt have cutters for because it was faster than trying to eyeball each one. it would be easier to even laminate the designs even so they'll stay longer but if you cant do that, honestly the paper would keep just fine, it pulls super easy off the dough and then dries or you can add a bit more grease and do another

What do you guys think of this? It's a body pillow that's supposed to be a parody of MRA's/Neckbeards. Some people have argued that it's unfair the men, and others have argued that if the same were done with a feminist, the female equivalent, a shit fit, several tumblr blogs, and articles would've been written about how "misogynistic" it would have been against women to make a body pillow like this. Thoughts?

Sorry if this comes off as redundant but which cons would you guys say yield most profit? I haven't been to very many (AX, once to Fanime, and NYCC if that even counts) because I can't afford them but if sales cover transportation, etc and also earn me some extra cash, I might actually be able to attend.

I hope you're still here baking anon cus I wanted to share my second-(pretty much third) hand experience with baked goods and cons. A friend of mine worked for a small cupcake bakery for a while, and somehow they managed to get an artist alley table for one of the biggest cons in the state.

They made a killing selling their normal cupcakes as well as cake pops decorated as pokeballs and master balls. They sold out numerous times over the weekend (I helped by buying a ton of the cake pops, I'm a huge sucker for them). However, my friend did mention they almost got kicked out of the hall, whether by selling edible food or not having pre-packaged food (their cake pops were wrapped, but not their cupcakes). If I remember right, the con staff allowed them to stay so long as they never tried selling in the artist alley again after that year.

Making sure to specify the type of charm you want (single/double sided, acrylic board or epoxy) as well as the finish (metal keychain, bead chain, phone strap) also helps. i'm panicking a bit
i submitted my sellers permit to fanime and everything, and went to double check that the number comes up as valid on the BOE website
it does, but under address it shows my home address instead of the convention center address, which the fanime website says it MUST show for it to be valid

i'm wondering if this is because i applied for a multiple location permit for both fanime and AX at the same time? so instead of showing either of the convention addresses it's just showing mine?
i know that fanime staff have been kind of douchebags about little shit like this in the past and i'm half expecting them to tell me i can't table now instead of trying to work through it with me.

I actually just go them today! It took about two weeks total time. I'm actually surprised at the quality of them. Printing wise it's a downgrade from Ink it labs, they don't print gradients that well and they don't print as high of a resolution as ink it. Their are better than Zap Creatives though. The design doesn't have that annoying white ring that Zap is known for and their edges are a lot more smooth.

The back is matted coat and applied pretty thick. I've picked at it and scraped it with a quarter and the charm is scratch resistant. I was surprised they were coated as some imported clear charms aren't. I remember an anon saying they were concerned about that.

Charms were about 97 each for a 2.37 inch double sided charm. This is about the same price I paid for Vograce's two sided epoxy charms at the same size. $1.13 if you want charms closer to three inches. Finishing services are included in the price if you want keychain, phone strap ETC.

I'll probably go with these guys for older designs I don't care about and Ink it Labs for my current designs/custom acrylics.

I did go through a proxy service to get these done though. So I paid extra for fees and to get these shipped to me.

Man what a bummer. I really wanted to do this one year but saw all the restrictions on edible food. I mean I understand 100% why but I'm on the same boat with the other anon. I love decorating cookies (Though they are pretty fucking inedible anyway, royal icing is beautiful for coloring but shitty to taste), as well as cupcakes and cake pops and whatnot. (I've started making some candies that are steven universe inspired)

I wonder if it's possible to get a booth at a con as a vendor, rather than in the artist alley. Granted it would be much more expensive but probably a better way to go, especially if you have a bakery behind you.

Not that anon, but what people refer to Tumblr art tend to consist of a mix of
> red noses
> just really weird fat noses
> potato faces
> '"''unique""" bodies aka lumpy anatomy
> falling into uncanny valley between cartoon and anime style
> making character look caractiracturely like a certain ethnicity for """diversity"""

Aside from what >>8340650 said, I'll consider Tumblr art to be
>very simple, sometimes awkward anatomy that looks rushed
>2edgy haircuts and colors
>potato noses specifically
>limited shading
>paper textures
Keep in mind that "Tumblr art" usually has 4 or more of this + other anon's list. Having one or two things in your art doesn't automatically rule you out.
Tumblr art is also really tryhard at being unique, but ends up all looking the same (that's how it's so easily identified)

Not the other anon but going from the lefthandside of the image
>THREE-QUARTER VIEW FACE
>giant heads, tiny hands
>excessive handhiding
>L-shaped hook noses
>stocky proportions
>no shading
>sameface

And I don't know how to word this one well, but most of the pictures have kind of generic posting with plain backgrounds. The rightside has a couple with some interesting stuff going on, like the two next to the Harry Potter frame print. Right is a bit amateurish in comparison.

That's nice! It would be cool to see you resize it so that they are full bodied. The biggest thing I see as a "trend" in LoL fan art is 1- It's always Lulu/Big boobed champ. 2- It's always a boring bust. 3- There are never any ships.
I've seen some beautiful exceptions to the rules of course, like super pretty Leonas/Diania, buuuut that's cause they are rival queer for each other. So a Thresh/Kalista? I approve. Shadow Isles are rarely seen champs in the fan art. Unless it's Thresh or Eve and it's a bust of them. Meh. My two cents.

>forcibly making all characters a different ethnicity
>also too forcibly making them different body types
>HUGE MASSIVE NOSES
>Red noses to some degree (a lot of artists use some sort of red to shade noses, but we're talking about Rudolph the red nose reindeer-tier here)
>characters wearing multiple tumblr fashion trends all at once

None of these alone are an issue, but it's the part where they all kind of melt together. For example you can make characters have different body types because it CAN make it more interesting. But a lot of people on tumblr make it too exaggerated for the characters they use.

Oh and the biggest red flag

Sorry if this is the wrong thread for this kind of question (which is probably super noob btw). How can I make a pattern that looks like pic related using GIMP? And by looks like pic related I mean the sort of simulated random placement and sizes of the different parts, but is still obviously a pattern that would be coherent together and can tile. The only tiling tutorials I find are for the kind where it just puts the images in exactly the same size side by side from each other kind of like a checkerboard, and it's not what I want since I'm trying to design fabric. So I kind of want that "scattered" look a lot of the fabrics on places like say spoonflower have. Any help would be super appreciated!

And just because its paper mario doesnt mean your work has to look so flat. like his right arm seems like it wasnt developed really well before the lineart was put on. i think you need to work on fundamentals a bit more. you should get to a point where you can draw anything with relative ease and draw paper mario dudes in a second.

Any opinions on stickers vs keychains?
I would love to see my artwork on both, but idk if that's practical so I guess its up to whichever is more "utilitarian" or useful/attractive to potential customers. For stickers, I'm looking into kiss cut sticker sheets so they'd probably be around 5"x7".
