San Jose is probably the best city I've experienced for welcoming congoers but I remember trying to find out where to keep my car for the weekend so I went and talked to the lady at the garage behind Psycho Donuts on Friday. I was asking the most basic questions and being super polite but I was getting a ton of:
>The city isn't liable if anything happens to your car
>You people are taking away spots from other tourists
>The hotel parking is expensive? You should have thought about that before staying there.
>Huge smile on her face this whole time

I really should have given her a piece of my mind because she immediately pegged me as one of those Fanime people and was determined to make sure I didn't use them. She was driving the liability part so hard that I thought she would personally take a bat to my car if I parked there. The convention center's parking got my business instead and were fine but I really should have gotten that lady's name so I could complain to someone. But fuck she already works at a parking garage I can't imagine I could make her life much worse.

I only go to Acen thus far, but I've gotten positive reception by people in between travels or at the hotel for business no matter who I cosplay. Still, weapons spook the locals and it's hilarious seeing their expressions.

Was cosplaying Quiet (MGSV) while at a pizza place with a group of friends and holding my sniper rifle prop while waiting on order. Police show up awhile later. I know I'm doing nothing wrong so I ignore them. The police take their own orders while acting natural. So I give the gun to a friend before going back outside to convenience store.

Come back and friend tells me the police confronted him and claimed I was scaring the locals. Why they didn't tell me while I was there, I don't know.

But yeah, that first day was rough. Lots of drunk idiots walking around.

Also one of my friends was dressed as Merida from Brave, with three cute stuffed bears. So she's covered from wrists to ankles.

Her boyfriend had to escort her the second day because she got harassed so much by street people /and/ con goers. It was fucked up. Apparently it was even worse on the con floor because either that year was extra douchy or normals walked in to the part where tickets weren't needed.

it was really...rude. Normally people just ask whats going on or why you're dressed like that. Often I have to tell them, "oh I'm doing a photo shoot." and they leave me alone, but damn. Sitting on top of me or shoving my friend over yelling "We're taking a pic now!" is a bit much.

Not sure about other countries, but US moms seem to be afraid of any form of discipline.

Was at a con and a Hispanic mom in cosplay was letting her kids run around actually. Me and a seagull I met were looking at each other every time one of them nearly stepped on us while hopping around on the hotel couches. One of them was named Carlos which gave us a laugh at least.

This. People are overly sensitive now about anything hat remotely resembles abuse. There's even a form of parenting now where you never say the word "no" to your children. Something about redirecting them or something like that but holy shit you better have a kid that already has a good temperament to make that work. Luckily I think people are finally coming around to realizing that the everyone's special/participation trophy approach to schooling is a horrible unrealistic message to give to kids.

My brother's ex-wife never let him discipline their children, and from what I hear, they're little monsters. She would bribe and negotiate with them to get them to do something a simple as going to bed, and now anytime you tell them to stop doing something, they're right back at it again not a minute later. It infuriates me to no end because they would have been good kids otherwise.

It's just that the city loons spend all their free time on social media and receive a disproportionate amount of media coverage (because they like making a circus of themselves, and that shit sells papers/airtimes). Big megaphone effect. If California was as megablue as people think, Prop 8 wouldn't have gotten any traction. But just 'cuz rainbow-haired hipstertwinks, goony beardmen, and thick-rimmed glasses progressive techies trying to bed said twinks dominate the tele-picturebox ignores certain large demographic blocs *cough*latinos*cough* which sway heavily socially-conservative.

People don't realise that not all children are going to behave and 'talking to them like an adult' simply doesn't work if they are little gobshites.
I've got 3 brothers, only girl in the family. Eldest one was disciplined like a soldier and misbehaved when he was a child. Turned out fairly well. I've never been hit (I've been grounded a few times) as I'd been quite timid in my childhood and teenage years. The youngest twins, however, had been allowed pretty much anything, have never been hit once, have never been grounded, and now one of them is a petty criminal while the other's a flaming retard who's wasting his life away drinking and clubbing. They were born around the time when 'spanking your child is abuse!' was gaining tract. Not that it's true for everyone but I've met enough spoiled, screaming brats to start believing in the good aul 'spare the rod, spoil the child'

I haven't cosplayed in ages and I mostly participate in lolita, but I remember being constantly mistaken for Mickey Mouse when I had a deadmau5 mask years ago; I was even approached by an Indian couple to take a photo with their kid with that assumption. It was funny and cute looking back at it.

Last year's NYCC, my brother sent me a photo of a pair of Poison Ivy and the Joker which was cool at first and he knows that I'm into dumb nerdy stuff, but then I realized that it was taken as they were walking. I know that it's hard to pull people aside to take photos when speed walking through Manhattan, but it was pretty rude to snap a photo without asking. Usually when normies hear "alt fashion" they assume goth/rave stuff or retro/vintage. Be prepared for them to be confused. Whether they like it or not will depend on your style and their personal tastes, though, so we can't really predict that.

I remember I was walking in the street with a long blond wig (I was dressed a little weird, but nothing too exagerated), and a group of kids ran to me, and started pulling my wig. Then they just stared and me, and said stupid things like "IT'S A WIG, RIGHT? THAT'S NOT YOUR REAL HAIR, IT OBVIOUS"
It wasn't that bad, but I tought they were going to steal my wig and run away or something (they were some poor-looking kids, by the way. I bet their parents sent them to annoy me)

Everytime I go out dressed in cosplay, or just wearing a wig, I got insulted and sometimes threatened (stupid people saying they are going to hit me, or steal me, that kind of stuff). It SO annoying, jesus.
I really wish people said stuff like "is it halloween?" or something like that to me. When I read other people's experiences, they don't seem to be thaat bad

The utter depravity and... pettiness (?) of some people never ceases to amaze me. "They look weird, so they deserve to die." The thing that surprised me the most in that case is the guy's mom joking with him about him beating innocent people to death. But I guess it explains where he got it from. I wonder if any of them ever felt remorse. I wonder that every time I see a cases of people committing such huge crimes so young. Did they ever grow up and realize what shitheads they were?

I'm glad I live in a college town where weird people aren't that unusual. People mostly just call me cute when I'm in lolita or ask a few questions about it, if they talk to me at all. There's the staring, but that's to be expected. I don't have any fear of being beat up or killed for it, at least.

Because to them that's always the case. If you're not wearing normal clothes from Carson's or Macy's you already stand out. I remember being 13 and thinking goths were some kind of spectacular rarity.

Sorry for continued OT, but related. My boyfriend and his brother are a perfect example.

Boyfriend was raised with a generally firm hand, but younger brother was crazy coddled by mom after a life-threatening childhood accident. My boyfriend is a fit, hardworking adult. His brother is the complete opposite.

He sleeps all day, doesn't work, and when he eventually spoke to me in English (they're Japanese), every other word that came out of his mouth was "fuck", and he was talking about a strip club he worked at with his mouth full of food at the dinner table. Boyfriend looked ready to pass out, bf's dad looked ready to murder, but bf's mom just smiled and shrugged it off and patted him on the head. My boyfriend later told me that when they were in school together, he had to frequently beg the dean/principal not to expel his brother.

Same, anon, but its me and my siblings. I'm the only one that has a high school diploma, went to trade school, and doesn't live with my parents. Both my brothers are unemployed and still at home. The one is fully aware he needs to find another place by the end of the month as they're moving to a smaller house without enough bedrooms (he already said he was looking at a place when they got it, which was a lie). One does nothing but party to the point of alcohol poisoning and the other, i dont even know, he just goes in the woods and smokes i guess. I feel like its just a case of first time parents that do everything by the book for the first kid, but then my brothers were born relatively close together to where as soon as one was done with a phase the other was in it so my parents just got overwhelmed.
