Let's have a dumb questions thread, where you can ask questions you feel like would get shot down in any other place.

Would it be smart to wear lolita to a wine and painting class?

>> No.8519244

>>8519239
some lolitas have done it, but would you trust tipsy strangers holding containers of potential stains around your brand?

>> No.8519248

That's why I'm thinking of getting a spot in a corner if possible. I want to stay as far away from those people if I'm going to wear my burando.

Lolita is loud, alternative fashion. It is not tasteful to wear it to formal events normal expectations of attire. It has nothing to do with being classy.

>> No.8519264

bring a huge apron and don't wear anything special.

why are you wearing lolita to an event like that anyway? is it a comm thing? it's no big deal to me why you just choose to do it, just wondering what the circumstances are.

>> No.8519265

>>8519239
Whenever I painted at school I would be careful but paint would somehow end up on me. I don't know why you would even think about doing it unless you wear lolita 24/7 but you should still be wearing clothes you don't mind getting ruined.

Apparently this is a dumb question:

Is Angelic Pretty (or any other brand if you happen to know) made in a sweat shop?

I'm really curious.

The class I want to go to in particular is having a themed event. They're having a contest for it and everything. I'm not meeting there with a comm; I was mainly thinking of going by myself.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BVeKzdqnxB8 This video actually shows how BTSSB's stuff is made, from creating the patterns to actually making the clothes.

bring an apron or something, or change at the event.

>> No.8519303

>>8519287
Might help to tell us what the themed event actually is but you should be able to tell if it's smart or not yourself. It's not like you can predict if something will end up on your outfit but it likely can and maybe will.
If the contest is separate then you can bring a change of clothes but I assume it's not like that. Just think about how you would feel if you ruined your clothes and decide for yourself if it's worth it.

Just wear your most expensive brand and don't give a fuck. I'm sure if you are very careful you can avoid it. Also I don't think anyone would spill anything on you unless it's on purpose. Those kinds of events are very classy and usually stain and accident free.

I've tried to ask this before but I never really get cohesive answers; is it worth the SS fees and intl shipping to make a small(ish) taobao order? Like maybe $200-400 worth of cosplay, wigs, and clothing, no shoes or heavy things. I was under the impression for years that unless an order was $700+ it wasn't worth it, so I'd HAVE to find someone to group order with, but the only time I did a group order it was very disorganized and I wouldn't order with them again.
Or, alternatively, what's the smallest amount you'd order from taobao?

>> No.8523997

>>8523948

If it makes you feel better to have a bigger order, you could always be the one to organise a group order, see if anyone wants to hop in.

Either way though, that's a really weird way to approach the question.

What you should really be asking yourself is:
>what am I buying, how badly do I need it

If it's something you absolutely must have to complete a costume/coord for a certain event by set date, then you're not going to have much choice, are you? $400 or $700, you're going to *have* to buy it.

If it's something you can live without, eh, why even buy it.

>what are the alternatives, what is the best choice amongst the alternatives

Other than taobao, check local shops, eBay, Aliexpress, storenvy, amazon, etsy, etc. They don't all carry the same items, it may turn out that what you want is only available on taobao, or vice versa.

Then. Evaluate your alternatives. Add together the estimated shipping cost (you'll have to guess the weight of the item, or take a similar item you have at home and weigh it. Then use the shipping calculator on your chosen shopping service's website), SS fees and the price of the item, for eg - a taobao item might cost $5, SS fees are $1, shipping is $20, making a total of $25. off eBay the same item might be $7 but with free shipping. THAT is when it makes more sense to buy it off eBay. On the other hand, a taobao dress might cost $100 off taobao, SS fees $15, shipping $20, while off a reseller site it costs $150. Then it's cheaper to go through taobao.

Create a spreadsheet to organise the info if you need to, and don't be afraid to split the order up if it saves you money. I've done sewing projects where the lace comes from taobao because it's the best quality at lower price, and fabric is locally sourced so I can feel the fabric, and the beads are from 1cent eBay free shipping auctions.

>> No.8524655

>>8519266
AP might be sometimes, but jetj, vm, and mm are not. I think iw is still made in Japan, too.

>> No.8524675

>>8523997
It's less of do I need it or not and more of a I know I'm overpaying when I buy cosplay from eBay and Aliexpress, combined with wanting some offbrand lolita pieces from taobao stores. I've already done the alternatives advice you gave me. I've been eyeing taobao for about 3 years now, but never made an order on my own.

Basically I'm just trying to figure out how small of an order is "too small" to justify it instead of just buying from resellers. I know it's a strange way to approach it. Maybe this question of mine is even too stupid for this thread.

I'm really sensitive to light. As in, I have to wear sunglasses all the time outside and sometimes indoors. I recently tried circle lenses for the first time and I literally couldn't open my eyes outside because of the light. Is this something I'd get used to, or should I just not wear them if I need to see at all?
>tfw next cosplay has bright purple eyes

>> No.8524727

did the sunglasses help at all? could you carry a parasol or wear a wide hat to help shield your eyes?

Sunglasses brought me down to about the level of pain I get in the sun without them, maybe a little worse. I generally try to limit my time outside, but even on the con floor it was difficult. I'm sure I had them in right, too; there was no pain outside the light sensitivity.
Last time I wore my costume I just did without the lenses, but the inaccuracy bothered me a little and when I do a shoot I'd like to be fully correct.

>> No.8524769

Of course it is. If your hair is the right color and length and can be styled right, it can look better than a wig because, you know, it doesn't look like a wig. Because it isn't. This is especially true for for very short cuts, partially shaved cuts, and pulled back styles that show the front hairline. For elaborate updos, a combination of your own hair (for realistic hairline and no weirdness in the back where wig hair is pulled up against the weave) and extensions can be ideal.

First thing's first: you gotta make sure that other brands are even allowed Some brand tea parties demand your main piece be of that brand.

Other lolitas might just give you the stink eye, though. If you don't care about that, then go on ahead.

With a print it might be hard (there's a reason border print dresses are cupcake- it's hard to match up). Anyway if you just unpick and re-gather on the waistband it's still going to be a rectangle skirt and cupcake shaped with a cupcake petti. I think a-line requires cutting. I'm not really experienced, sorry, maybe somebody else will help with that. This is just generally telling you gathered skirts are cupcake.

People joke about him being the god of lolita. He almost never speaks and you should look up interviews with him on youtube. They are golden.

Misako is newer to lolita than Mana. She started out modeling for bodyline back when they still were a borderline sex shop. She then started modeling for some bigger lolita brands and for Kera, a japanese street fashion magazine. She's very popular overseas as a lolita model. She was jokingly called the godess of lolita once Mana started to lose popularity, but she's fallen out of favor with some lolita because she's gotten tied up in all the AM drama.

So for Inkling wigs, the general idea is to get a regular wig and attach fabric tentacles to it, right? Would attaching wig hair to the fabric make it look stupid? Since I personally don't like the look of fabric tentacles.

The wig hair tentacles would have to be really, really well done in order for you to pull it off.

This girl did it and it looks excellent but that''s because of how neatly she got the fibers to stay down.

I wonder if doing this technique and then coating it with some kind of sealer would give a more uniform/glossy look..

actual bows look awful and are often not even possible with the necessary width and weight of the fabric. You can do them with a loop of fabric for the bow part rather than a flat rectangle, but sailor scout type bows have to be fake, not tied.

Any petticoat color is fine really, since it's not supposed to be seen, but white is the best option since it won't show through fabric. This blog is really useful for beginners: http://fyeahlolita.blogspot.ca/2009/10/how-to-avoid-being-ita.html

Bodyline isn't bad per se, it's just hit or miss and tends to be the cornerstone of a bad coord. It's definitely possible to wear it right, however. There's a thread here on it. Best of luck.

It's common for cosplayers to use multiple covers for the same base shoe.

Nah, but if you wear it year after year, regulars at that con will notice. Anything past three years feels a little sad imo, unless it's an enduringly popular series and/or a really good costume.
