I'm finally reaching the point in life of having grownup jobs in offices so I'm hoping to transition my wardrobe into otome office wear. My one problem is that I have a bunch of OTT sweet lolita (not to mention a decade's worth of normalfag clothes) in my closet taking up space and I'm hesitant to part with them. Lately I've been spending time on auctions buying up otome pieces for 1,000 yen or less but I don't know what to do when I physically run out of space for new stuff in my closet.

Take the pieces you don't want to keep, and put them in a box or separate them from the rest of your wardrobe. The ones that have not been worn or that you haven't thought of in six months to a years time, you can get rid of.

some of the common ways to coordinate in otome style is to use 'color popping' where a less prominent shade featured in say a jsk, is used in the accessories etc (pic related). Complimentary colors are also used rather than just say, exact color matching.

Patterns can clash as well, a good guide is not to mix say, stripes with stripes and instead combine with spots/dots instead.

I would recommend looking though otome galleries in general to help you absorb more of a sense of otome style and how it works. It's not really the sort of thing you can just learn in the form of a guide.

Otome often has a slightly quirky or whimsical look about it, if your outfit doesn't have a slight hint of quirky storybook character about it, there is a chance you may have missed the mark slightly. Plainer combos exist but even then, you'll often see a cute hairstyle used or slightly unusual (ie not 'normalfag') jewellery and shoes.

I was going to post this in the stupid question thread, but I feel like there's a better chance of getting an answer here. What does it mean when Emily Temple Cute pieces are listed at 160cm? I sort of assumed their pieces are all designed with a 5' - 5'4 person in mind, so I'm a little confused.

I think of it as a modern take on mid-century girls clothes - checking out vintage kids' book covers and girls' manga from the 60s and 70s is a good start for getting the aesthetic in your head. Also, take a look at some of Junichi Nakahara's art as another touchstone. Studying vintage color palettes is key to combining colors in a way that makes sense in otome.

Making a mood board or two is always good too - no images of clothes, just photoshoots, movie screenshots, etc. I make a new one every time I change theme and it's really helpful in keeping my purchases on target.

And as always, Sharon Kinsella's Cuties in Japan is helpful for an English-language cultural framework on how Japanese-style cute works. It's nice to have a bit of the cultural background and history to understand the overall aesthetic goal of an otome outfit. It also helps in figuring out what works from non-otome brands (although I like to think otome isn't entirely childish in the way the paper talks about cute. In some ways, it reminds me of Prada's "intellectual dressing" when at its most creative)

I know this isn't really the place to ask as much as the help thread would be, but I've been trying to get into otome and I find a lot of my co-ords end up looking more casual sweet lolita or too matchy-matchy in general. I was wondering if anyone wouldn't mind giving me a bit of advice please? Somehow I always end up asking other lolitas rather than other otomes for advice on this and I don't know if it's not helping or I just really suck or some combination of both. I've been lurking for a good while, and I thought I had the hang of it as some of my more recent purchases have been less sweet, but I clearly still don't fully grasp it just looking at my wardrobe. Does anyone have any co-ording advice or future purchases advice for me? I don't want to be a notome forever. Will dump random otome images below as thanks

A lot of the dresses have prints that lean sugary-cute rather than vintage-cute. Taking off bows and large embellishments where you can and not using the neck ties would tone them down, as well as investing in a few more solid color cardigans. Though the v-neck sweaters might also not be the best shape- round neck works better, as well as going for stronger colors.

Also, the shoes look extremely Lolita. You could invest in a pair of t-straps, brogues or boots. The little details really make the difference.

Forgive the incoming fatty-chan so (large boobs + bad angle + weighty). Here is yesterday's and today's outfit. Yesterday I was at a lolita BBQ. I wanted to try and wear the love nadia dress as otome but after failing to match a single brown with any other brown in my wardrobe, I gave up and threw pink over it as the girl on the print is holding pink flowers and there was pink on the bag. It ended up casual sweet and somewhat ita. Today is a super lazy daily wear thing with the meta pop swinger dress.

>>8558198
I actually have a rainbow lot of solid colour cardigans, but I didn't include them as they're just normal high street ones. But valid point that I do need otome-specific cardigans, I've just been hesitant as high collars tend to add on quite a bit of weight. Also thank you on the shoes, I hadn't really noticed but they are quite lolita. I'll definitely look into some more toned down ones in future

>> No.8558372

>>8558321
For the first outfit, definitely change the shoes. That's what screams lolita to me the most out of this. Other than that I think you're not too far off. I'd change the pink cardigan for some shade of teal but that's a personal preference, though it would help with the matchy-matchy-ness.

>> No.8558444

Teal is a great idea! To original anon, a lot of lolita works in analogous colors when it's complementary colors that make otome really pop.

It's a pretty series but the wine color looks muddy. The green and the blue seem to pop a lot more.

>>8558037
I'll give it a shot. I can be a bit blunt, so sorry if I sound like a dick.

>Bodyline main pieces miss the mark
I feel like you're trying to shoehorn these into otome. I'm sure someone can make them work, but to me they seem too lolita.Maybe you should hold off using them until you've fleshed out the rest of your wardrobe and got a bit more experience?

>Cardigans are alright, but need some work
There's nothing wrong with the current ones you have. I think simple, loose cardigans, can work well in the fashion, but buttoning them up like you did over here >>8558321 isn't flattering and makes the cardigan look cheap.
Do you own any cropped cardigans? I think they work well in the fashion and they'd be far more flattering when butoned.

If you want to make your coords more interesting you should think about adding some details to the top half of your outfit. At the current stage the cardigan is a visual block that dominates your coord. Adding some details to your cardigans like new buttons, a removable collar, brooches, etc, will help solve this problem.

>Shoes are alright, but can be improved
I don't mind the shoes you have (save for the Bodyline wedges) but I think adding some more adventurous colors or styles into the mix will give your coords the pop they need.
I'm a big fan of brogues and Melissa shoes. I know the latter can be expensive, but the quality is quite nice and they frequently go on sale. Keep in mind that a small heel is more flattering than a 100% flat shoe. The slight lift they provide helps make a coord look more mature.

>Legwear collection needs expanding
You've made a good start with leg wear but getting some more pop pieces will improve your coords. I struggle with legwear to, so I know how hard it can be!
Have you considered something with either horizontal or candy cane-like stripes? I think they'd work with your non-Bodyline main pieces.

>Bags are little too cutesy
The Rilakkuma and Arpakasso bags could be fun in lolita, but they're a little childish to fit the maiden vide of otome. The other plain bags you have are fine.

>Accessories are important
I'm sure you've got a heap you haven't pictured, but I can't see many in the coords you posted. Remember that it's quality over quantity, and less is more.
If I'm wearing shortsleeves I like to focus my accessories on my hands and arms, and if the top half of my coord is simple, I like to go for a statement brooch or necklace.
I generally avoid plastic jewelry but that's up to you.

And some general rules:
>Quality over quantity
Try to invest in a few nice peieces you really want, rather than lots of cheap ones you're just 'meh' about. It makes a big difference to the quality of your wardrobe, and truly loving a piece can show through in a coord.
>Think kitsch rather than straight out cutesy
Otome fashion is cute, but the designs and cuts lean towards kitsch (that's the vintage-cute vibe that people sometimes talk about.)
>Not all lolita pieces will work
Sure, some pieces can be versatile across the two fashions, but trying to shoehorn something in looks naff.
>Be careful with offbrand
Some pieces can work in the fashion, but if you're consistently making bad purchases then you're wasting your money.
>Use a color chart
It sounds stupid but try using a color chart to help you pick interesting color combos for your coords.
>Surround yourself with inspo
Get on tumblr, insta, the Japanese coord apps, and follow people that inspire you. It'll really help you improve.

I hope that helps.

I think your wardrobe is very "lolita" right now. The bodyline dresses seem too busy for otome, the balloon bear and bunny skirt might be alright. I'd also invest in more interesting-looking cardigans, pic related is just a random one I grabbed from Leur Getter, ETC makes them too, and you might have some luck with offbrand. I'm mainly talking about neutral prints, ribbon details and stuff like that. Go for round-collar rather than V-neck.

A huge pet peeve of mine is when people call sloppy or lazy lolita "otome". Sure otome is closer to normal clothes in silhouette, but JM, ETC and LG are more expensive than lolita and it's the tiny details that matter. Offbrand, foreign made cardigans usually don't look good because the material is very stretchy over the boobs, the length is too long, the buttons are made of crap, and pilling starts to happen very soon in the armpit areas. Try to look for cardigans in working womens (aka more expensive stores). The details will still be shit but the cuts may be better. Think boxy and 60s, not tight and gaping at the buttons.

Same. I compare some of my old lolita pieces with otome and there's no comparison.

And you can sometimes get sweaters monogrammed in the more upmarket shops, which at least gets you a little bit of detailing. Printed knitwear is so cheap looking, people need to stick to intarsia designs, embroidery, or plain. I'd go further and say synthetic fibers in knitwear don't have the right look at all.

Wardrobe-anon here. Thank you so much to everyone who responded. Especially the double post anon, that was really helpful! I really appreciate it. I've been lurking long enough that I've been noticing my own co-ords aren't otome which is definite progress as it means I'm getting a better feel for it, but I still have a long way to go and I'm having trouble identifying exactly what I need to do next to get better. I was about to start investing in more accessories like shoes and cardigans which is why I decided to do the wardrobe post, so it's great that I got that feedback on what types I should be focusing on. And to the anon who posted about the bags, don't worry. They are basically con bags as they both hold a surprising amount. They don't see much use outside of conventions. If this was IRL, I'd probably style it, whole outfit, as:
>Rose pink cardigan or sweater. Needs to be the exact shade of rose pink, though.
>White/cream blouse with peter pan or scalloped collar.
>Pin worn at top button. I'd probably go for something floral to go coordinate with the feel of the stain glass.
>Horn rim glasses, roundish. Pearl glasses chain, I'm thinking similar to the chains JM has released.
>Mid-brown brogue boots.
>Satchel-style bag to match, must have a vintage professor-ish look. Or a bag that looks like a book in that similar color palette.
>Bonne Maison printed socks, either one of the French floral designs or Dark Spire. Something with an Old World feel.
>Hair in braided updo with dark blue velvet ribbon where needed to accent.

Wow anon - I've never actually seen my dream skirt in real life! If you don't mind my asking, would it be possible for you to let me know how you managed to get it (retail/auctions/private sale etc.)? I've been searching for it since release and I've never seen it anywhere beyond JM promotional material.

For coord advice, it depends on what colours suit you. It sounds like you already lean towards warm tones, so I agree with the anon above who suggested bringing in some rose pink. You could also introduce some gold accents with the pink while keeping the browns and creams.

You could also go the other way and take it darker; when I had the green OP I liked coordinating it with Bordeaux. You could keep the cream blouse, try a Bordeaux jacket or blazer, and add a structured hat like the ones VM release each A/W. I also like ankle boots and granny style/Victorian style boots with JMs medium length skirts, but I know that's very much a YMMV thing. This pair by JM are actually Bordeaux (excuse the bad photo) and I find that they work really well with this skirt length.

I wouldn't say its that bad, only borderline Notome not fully crossing into it. You have the right idea, the only thing that really makes this look bad are the tights, shoes and general fit of the dress.

Please consider getting a ETC dress that actually fits you, I find fit might even be more important then coordination in general, cause really no matter how much you try to work an outfit, if that shit don't fit its just gonna look awkward no matter what you do. If you're still hell-bent on wearing this dress no matter what consider binding/sports bra, losing a few pounds or taking the dress to a seamstress and altering the bodice.

Again its really the fit that's the main issue for this coord right now.

I had fallen into the habit of making coords with two colors, which honestly made them look one dimensional and flat. From looking at others' otome coords, I can see that usually the best coords are made with at least three colors or with one main color and small pops of other colors. With the secondary colors complimenting those already present in the main piece, of course.

Other anons have already covered this, but the JSK doesn't fit you. It's cutting your bust in half, and when you're able to get the straps up on to your shoulders they are cutting into you pretty obviously. If you want to wear ETC pieces make sure to go for their low waist styles, as pictured. In addition, make sure to actually fit the straps of the JSK to your body. You can move the buttons one the straps, and you're going to need to extend the length of the straps significantly. You may end up needing to add extra fabric.

Whether or not you want to wear a blouse is your choice, but if you don't wear a blouse you should wear a cardigan or a bolero. Just a JSK with thin straps alone isn't going to be flattering on you.

Coording the JSK with red is fine, but consider adding a white blouse, a red cardigan, white OTKs or tights, and red shoes to make the outfit more cohesive. Right now everything is very unbalanced: you have a light coloured JSK with nothing up top and very dark accessories on the bottom. I know what I suggested sounds a bit staid, but simple is better when you're finding your feet.

Feel free to ignore me on this one, because it may be my own personal preference bleeding through, but I'd also ditch the headeating bow. You generally need to balance those with voluminous hair, so the one you're wearing looks a bit awkward on you.

Good luck.

Vendetta? The fit is unfortunate yeah but that's a common problem with a lot of fatty-chans, she's certainly not doing anything super-special awful. She's just your average run-of the mill ill-fitting fatty that tends to get posted here a lot.

I personally find her face cute as fuck! As fat as her body is, she lucked out with her face not being a ham-planet. Thus making her one of the more qt fatty-chans I've seen on her, she definitely fits the whole "Marshmallow girl" motif. I think Otome suits her facial features perfectly, she just needs to look for stuff that actually fits her.

ETC Handkerchief fatty here! Thanks anon, I shall invest in all things you listed here and ditch the dark colored bottom.

I actually would've tried to go for a low-waist ETC dress the problem is very few low-waist Otome fits me since most of my weight is concentrated in my belly, I generally find empire-waist cuts to be much more comfortable even if they aren't as flattering. Plus I absolutely adore the print on this dress and I saw it on LaceMarket for only $70 bucks so I figured hell why not?

I'd still like to make this dress work despite my weight so I think I'll do as you suggested and take it to a tailor to add in some extra fabric before wearing it again.

Thanks so much for helping this newfag on babby's first Otome coord!

Your politeness levels are unprecedented anon.

I'm glad the advice helped. A bit of extra info using >>8556923 pic again for reference, when 'color popping' I think it works best to use say, two main items (in this case the cardigan and shoes) where the accent color is in the form of a soild block of color. If say the beret was also red, whilst all matching perfectly well, it would start to have a 'red shoehorned in' type appearance and would generally fall a little flatter and be less visually interesting - the eye would be less drawn to the other details in the coord. The tan beret helps break up the colors whilst echoing (although not exactly matching) the gold in the print and buttons of the cardigan.

Summer appropriate coords attached. Think chiffon or light cotton short-sleeved OPs or jsks worn with light chiffon blouses or boleros. Light socks rather than tights, or if high socks are still too hot, cute pattern or frill ankle socks.

It is possible to go blouseless and sockless but make sure the headwear, bag, jewellery etc keep the bold and quirky element of otome. Only do this if it's really damn hot out.

Hair accessories could include summer hats such as straw boaters, bow hairbands, flower corsages and quirky hair clips.

Chiming in with everyone, the fit is not flattering. Even if the bodice was bigger, empire waist isn't flattering on a large chest.

Otome is for everyone, but it has to look good. If you look at otome brand dresses, they rely on box pleats and tailored bodices. Since the overall effect is more tailored, fit becomes much more important. You can't just hide bad fit behind massive amounts of fabric and lace like in lolita.

Its my money that I bought it with so its all mine to do with what I please forever, not everyone treats their J-fashion as a public closet to be passed on around the community.

>>8566946
Oh? I was always told empire waist is the most flattering cut for apple shapes such as myself, just so long as they aren't in Lolita where you need a petti for that poof which turns into emphasizing that wideness instead of hiding it.

Would binding or a sports bra get my bust down enough to make it look acceptable?

>> No.8566973

>>8566950
I've got big boobs and actually find a pushup bra works to strap me down a bit (counterintuitive I know, but pushup bras work by pushing the boobs in and up) - I can usually lose about an inch and the extra lift helps with maintaining an elegant line (especially since Japanese dresses are usually made for a shorter frame and thus shorter torso, so the bust darts will be higher). Definitely a case of needing a blouse to cover any resulting cleavage though. The Freya plunge bras are nice for a model that's not padded.

Since sports bras just push the boobs in by whatever means necessary, you tend to just get an unfeminine monoboob effect from them. As a last resort though, they could be worn under something non-tailored.

As for cut, maybe something A-line? I tend to find empire waist adds a lot of volume. Could see a longer empire bodice working, but it needs to be defined under the bust first before extending out into the skirt part.

>> No.8567007

>>8566950
Who told you that? I'm an apple too, empire waists make you look pregnant, especially if you have a gut. A-line just-waist cuts are more flattering, high waisted is also passable. You won't be able to achieve that with JP brand high waisted cuts, because they will not cover your chest.
Honestly, just give up on the dress or turn it into a skirt.

>> No.8567013

>>8566911
This. Also speaking as a seamstress it's not possible to add fabric to that dress to get it to fit right. The only way to make it fit would be to turn it into a skirt.

>> No.8567020

>>8566950

The thing is, since your bust measurement is larger, the empire waist cuts on ETC JSKs are cut too short to accommodate you. ETC bodices are cut short to begin with, and the bodices on their empire waist dresses are extremely short. When you wear it, the whole dress gets pulled up because the bodice is accomodating more volume than it is designed to. However, because of this, an ETC low waist JSK will fit you as if it was an empire waist JSK. So, if you prefer the way an empire cut looks on you then the low waist version is the way to go when shirring is involved.

Since you want to keep your dress you should definitely see what moving the buttons on the straps will do for you, but you will probably need to add more fabric to get that bodice to sit better. You might then run into the problem of the neckline of the JSK sitting too low on you, and need to cover that with a cardigan or a bolero. If you have an alterations place near you, take the dress in and see if you can have a chat to someone to get a feel for whether they'll be able to help you out.

>>8567060

Sorry, I might have communicated my point badly back there. I don't know your body shape - it's not really possible to tell for sure from the photos you posted. If you feel that your stomach is larger than your bust then I'm sure that you're correct - you know your own body. What I meant is that your bust is too large to fit into ETC empire waist cuts, and that that is causing the dress to ride up and sit too high on you: because the bodice is accomodating more than it is designed to it is stretching out horizontally and pulling everything up too high. The same thing is going to happen to ETC low waist JSKs, but instead of cutting you across the bust they should instead sit like an empire cut on you. This may still not be wholly flattering, because the bodice will still be accomodating more than it was designed to and may look a bit over stuffed, but it will look a lot better than a JSK in an actual empire cut.

I'd also suggest taking your measutements sometime so that you have a really solid idea of what your proportions are. If you have some waist definition then skirts or dresses that sit at or cinch in at your natural waist can be very flattering.

Off the top of my head, Library, Royal Stamp, Puss in Boots, Royal Order, Anniversary Ribbon, Lang du Chat, and a couple others JSKs routinely sell for 30000Y or more. A few that used to sell around that price have dropped recently to ~220-25000Y. Most other prints are inexpensive and the solids can be had for a song. I picked up one of my favorite prints (Scotland Scarf) nwt for 16000Y and I almost certainly 'overpaid' in the sense that no one else was interested and I probably could have got it cheaper if I'd cared less about getting it. (The skirt version has been constantly relisted on YJ; I'd buy it if the seller lowered it from 10000Y)

I think it could. For something simple, play off the pale blue detail with a yellow or powder blue cropped cardigan/jacket with lace collar detail and add stripe tights/socks in coordinating colors, patent t-strap shoes, a brimmed hat with big corsage and bag with an unusual but on-theme shape, like one of those teapot bags.

Or if you can find it, try with a powder blue short sleeved peter pan collar shirt to layer underneath.

I just received my OP from this series and the dress doesn't have the Jane Marple tag sewn into it. Is this normal for JM pieces? Can someone who bought items from this series or who owns a lot of JM confirm this? I only own a handful of JM pieces and all other pieces have tags sewn into then so the missing tag is kinda suspicious to me.

Also, I'm slighly disappointed in the OP. I thought the fabric would be thick and textured, but the texture effect is only printed on on a very thin summer-like fabric. The dress is also unlined which honestly suprised me, since the only unlined JM pieces I came across were their cutsew OP's in the 30.000 yen range. For almost 50.000 yen I excepted something else tbh.

There's a tag in the photo of that dress and I've never seen a JM piece without a tag. The lack of lining is weird, too, but it couldn't be a knockoff because it's a brand new release. Sounds like poor quality control and possibly slipping quality and corner cutting overall, which would be a little surprising.

>>8575416
yeah I got that dress

I thought the tag would be placed elsewhere, it's really weird for a JM piece not having a tag at all.

The only plusside is, that I can use it as a summer piece. I'd definitely be freezing my ass off, if I wore that in late autumn or winter. Still a nice print though, I was just expecting something else.

>> No.8575717

>>8575444
Check to see if the tag is located on the side of the dress.

And there is no way the dress could have been made with a textured/thicker material with the way it's gathered into a smock dress. Plus it clearly states 100% polyester. Doesn't the skirt portion have lining?

You can easily sell the dress if you're disappointed anon, but I've always been happy with all of my JM pieces that were paid at retail cost. Try waiting further into their autumn/winter line if you want more textured fabrics.

The skirt part doesn't have lining. The petticoat layer is actually a separate tulle underskirt. It's just one layer and it doesn't give any poof though.

>>8579218
Shorter skirt and dress lengths are acceptable in otome just use common sense and stick to the otome aesthetic; if you feel a shirt or dress is a little too short you could use a petticoat (doesn't necessarily have to be poofy) or an underskirt (keep it to one tier though if you know what I mean).

>> No.8579229

>>8579218
Don't stress about it. Dresses are usually longer than lolita length anyway (I'm 5'2 and JM skirts are past knee length vs AP being above knee), but I've seen girls wear shorts with legwear.

Otome doesn't stress about modesty as much as lolita does, but you should have the appearance of a young maiden.

>> No.8579301

I think Otome is very tall-friendly, the skirt length is a lot more flexible. Just make sure you wear tights instead of OTKs if the skirt is shorter, I think that makes it more modest.
