Yes it's "accurate", but could've been much executed better. Instead of having a sort of old and tired look (like a "I haven't slept in a thousand years" look), she instead just took the blue eyeshadow and made a circle around her eyes like a raccoon. Traditional Geisha makeup has red only in the tearducts, on the eyebrows and on the lips; they don't contour with it, like what they seemed to do in their picture. No touristic location would apply such sloppy makeup like that. Especially the one on the right, who obviously did her own makeup; she put makeup on her entire lips instead of making them look smaller (like in traditional makeup), her eyeliner looks like shit, and she contoured her face in red. Plus the hair ornaments look fake af.

It's some original character oiran cosplay and they made everything themselves. I'm a Yoshiwara/Shimabara history fan though and the sheer amount of costume AND makeup mistakes is unacceptable.

Tayu Aoi debuted this year and this is what a real oiran looks like. Their makeup and dress is more similar to apprentice geisha because its all about extravagance for them. Which also means many very expensive embroidered kimono stacked on top of each other. Cheap is definitely not a word in their vocabulary, which, i'm afraid, the whole cosplay is. I want to love it because it's not often someone attempts this but my heart says no.

Yeah they have their parents' consent but they're just actors really. Aoi is the last tayu at the moment who was brought up in the traditions because her mum is also a tayu. Prostitution has been illegal for a while though so they are much closer to geisha in the sense that they do ceremonies and festivals but no sex is involved.

Pay attention to how your collar and obi sit on you. That's what makes people cringe the most. The classic silhouette is a well covered up tube. Usually, a gap is left between the back of the neck and the collar but never the front no matter what ecchi manga might portray. If you're struggling with your collar you can stick a strip of something stronger inside to keep it looking neat.

Patterns and colors are coordinated with season and event (also goes for obi) and sleeve length depends on gender, age and marriage status. Flashier colors are for younger people, those super long sleeves are for unmarried women. Black with patterns on the tail is formal, black without patterns is for mourning (i'd be careful with that), white for brides. This is a stretchy subject for fashion applications and people probably wont be able to spot the intricacies but it's something Japanese people keep in mind (to answer the gaijin part).

I recommend watching some videos of how people get dressed in kimono, the fancier the better. It'll give you a sense of how many layers are involved and how the undergarments work to achieve the right silhouette. Also check out Ichiroya, it's an online second hand kimono store. They have an amazing selection and beautiful pictures. It's a great source of inspiration for sure.
