Kitacon tickets went on sale today; the convention sold out in around 20 minutes including all VIP spots.

The rules list is pretty strict this time. Committee members have said that many of the rules have been set by the hotel. Your room will be cleaned daily, and any DND sign ignored after 11am. If you get too drunk they can escort you to your room and/or kick you out of the con. Real fur is banned, as is outside food. Nobody's clear if this is just in the entire hotel or if you can still eat in your room.

And finally, Kita owns all your pictures, asides from those taken in private rooms. Because nobody wants to see your shitty after dark CMV.

It's a hotel rule apparently. Some committee are commenting on discussions and have said the hotel requested this but haven't specified if it's an allergy thing or an ethics thing. I'm interested in finding out.
So much of this has come about because Kita were adamant they weren't like the other cons with loads of rules. And now they have more stringent rules than any other con because they let people get away with so much. I feel quite bad for the committee if i am being honest, especially where there's been so many changes to the team. I feel quite positively about this year's con though.

If it's an ethics it still doesn't make a huge amount of sense. Real fur is banned but leather and meat being served is fine?

And if it's an allergies thing it doesn't make a huge amount of sense either because allergies are due do animal proteins excreted by animals in their sweat, urine and saliva. Fur is treated and washed before it's worn which removes 99% the above.

Okay, gulls, never been to Kita before so I need some advice. I assume you can walk to the NEC from the hotel, that's what the hotel site/Kita site say, so I'm guessing nabbing Subway/Spoons in the evenings rather than forking out for hotel food can be done without too much hassle? Secondly, got rooms for Friday and Saturday night. Check-in's not until 3pm and check out is at 12pm. Is it too much of a stretch to walk to the NEC, dump stuff in their cloakrooms and trek back, or is it doable? Or do Kita provide some sort of cloakroom? Thirdly, is the ball worth going to, and will I want to get pissed there and therefore regret not having a room to slump in drunkenly afterwards as opposed to getting on a skanky Brum train home? I'm contemplating going Premier Inn at the airport for Sunday night and possibly Thursday night, and also thinking I should have just booked Thurs-Mon there in the first place.

The hotel has a shuttle bus that takes you to the train station, which is attached to the airport. There is a new shopping centre that has opened by the hotel too, and it's about a ten minute walk away. It has a lot of variety there too!

You're fine to get to the NEC. It's really close. Ten minutes at a leisurely amble.

I phoned up and booked my room on the day. Provided they don't suddenly stab me with tax, it was £4 cheaper per night than Kita's listed price. I think maybe that money is part of what they pay to the hotel for reserving rooms, but it's just my speculation.

I love phoning to book. The staff are all American and super willing to please.

This just in from Kita:
"Hi All, First and foremost- thank you to everyone who have been waiting patiently for further news on being able to book rooms at the Hilton Hotel.
At this moment in time we have an unknown quantity of single occupancy rooms available on the Friday and Saturday nights. Unfortunately, Kitacon are unable to guarantee a room alongside a ticket to the event. All room allocations (that is room sizes, dates of availability etc) are decided by the venue and not by us. The venue are doing everything they can to open up as wide a range of rooms as possible. Even to this moment, that discussion is going on. However, due to other events being held on the same weekend and other restrictions, availability is subject to what is available at the hotel. Due to this restriction, it is unlikely that we will be able to offer Thursday rooms in future allocations but both Kitacon and the venue will try our best.
Every time that we get given information regarding new rooms being allocated, you are the first to know. Our committee are working around the clock to put up social media messages so that you are kept informed throughout the whole process.
This year, we are also aware that there has been some confusion regarding the final pay system when booking rooms. At the moment what we know is that the venue are charging attendees the first night of stay as a deposit (to secure the room) with the rest being taken out upon checking- in at the venue. As this is the first year this has happened, we are talking to the hotel to see what can be done. It is always recommended to pay a deposit if possible, as it ensures you a place to stay but we understand that this is not always feasible due to a range of financial reasons. Again, as soon as we know anything, we will contact you first."

Hotels cracked down on roomstuffing, some weebs with like 8 people in the room went and cried on the Facebook page about it and said they could have been 'murdered or worse'.

I just called up, apparently there's singles available for the 31st and the 4th but not in between. Obviously that's helpful as shit, but I checked online afterwards and nothing came up. There's still standard twins/doubles available though so the hilton clearly have more rooms available they're just being dickheads about it.

I'd be interested to see how many rooms actually got booked with the code, and how many before/after it actually got released because I was online perhaps 5/10 minutes after the email went out (and before kita announced it was out) and I didn't see any available.

Premier Inns are actually really decent. They actually have a really strict standard and try and mimic almost exactly the rooms at every one so they're the same.

Travel Lodges and Holiday Inns are much more hit and miss though.

And the Hilton is fairly high end. Depends which Hilton mind but some really are high end. The one in Birmingham NEC is mediocre but it's expensive for what it is.

Novotel by the airport is cheap. It's a walk and a taxi ride but you're right by a lot of food options and you can pick up a meal deal from boots on the way in as a packed lunch.

If you don't need to go back the room lots you can easily sleep 3-4 to a room and drive the price right down.
