As someone who doesn't understand korean at all, i was pretty much indifferent to the voice acting in MM until seven's route and his voice actor. He's the most expressive one (zen's number 2) and most similar to the voices i'm used to with japanese otome games. I know jumin is supposed to be a stoic character but i always end up skipping through his dialogue in calls and just read the text. Would it have been different if i did understand korean anons?

Not a Korean anon but I do understand a bit and I don't think understanding Korean would really have that big of an effect since everything is translated pretty well? I mean we foreign anons don't get some concepts like why the characters always ask if you've eaten (thanks anon who explained this!) but Jumin's character.. that type is pretty popular, like he's the typical Korean drama type. The stoic no-nonsense type that won't show he's in love until it bursts out, usually in a fit of possessive jealousy. You know the type, the one where the big dramatic love scene starts with him grabbing the girl's arm to stop her from leaving or pulling her dramatically away from a situation out of concern? It's a bit of a problematic troupe but nearly in every drama so Jumin's type is spot on for that where even if he's being romantic in a call his voice still says fairly flat as compared to guys like Zen who definitely have that Korean language flair where it's almost too overdramatic with the noises. To be honest, at times I thought I was playing a Japanese game until Zen called.

To be honest, it's harder for me to enjoy the voices because I can't follow along at all and can't tell when they're saying what. I don't speak a single word of Korean. My Japanese isn't amazing either but I can tell when they're saying what and it adds so much.

Yeah it definitely helps if you've at least been exposed to Korean culture a bit whether it's through video or audio because then even if you don't get all the words you get a better feel for the language and why certain characters (like Zen and Yoosung) talk like they do because it does differ a LOT from the Japanese way. Characters like Jaehee and Jumin though, they're pretty much universal with how they speak since it's mostly polite and professional.

Even if you don't know any Korean, I'd definitely suggest at least an episode or two of a Korean show/drama or even a movie to at least get the feel for it.

I'll browse around Youtube and see if I can find a clip of what I mean because once you even see the difference it helps a lot when it comes to visualizing certain characters, especially Zen who's more animated than the rest.

Okay I'm probably going to get some flack for this but I'm heading out and don't have time to properly search right now but here's basically what I mean, ignoring that the actors are all musicians and it's supposed to be a parody. It's got the same basic types as MM at any rate. One is a seemingly emotion-less businessman, then the MC, and a cast of other other characters with different personalities.

Cheesy acting aside, it basically shows the generic typecast personalities for a lot of Korean shows and that reflects into MM quite heavily along with a lot of other Korean influences like addictive gaming, smoking/drinking (and overdrinking) being fairly normal for certain characters, the emphasis on Western religion, and the mental health issues being used as a plot twist but otherwise not really mentioned/talked about.

We have our fair share of stoic characters in anime/japanese otome games too but i guess i'm just not really satisfied at how the tone of his voice doesn't change at all even in the later days. Zen is sometimes too comical and a little cringe worthy with the wolf howling and stuff but that i can still deal with.

With seven though, i guess it helped that his personality also changed, but i just called him and he was talking to himself unaware his phone was on. His voice was really expressive i ended up listening to it again.
