Hey /cgl/. My gf does historic loli like this and talked me into getting dressed for a tea party. Would it be inappropriate for me to wear a suitably fancy sword as part of the outfit she's making for me? Obvs going to be at a private party, and not in public. Just for fancy looks.

Ok, assuming that the venue and party is OK with it, it looks nice, you're not a sperg etc, I have advice for you, as someone who has to wear a sword around women in poofy skirts for a living: Don't. It is a monumental pain in the ass.

There is a reason there are countless macaroni prints (18thC satire comics) of men accidentally lifting or tearing skirts with their swords at dances or knocking over teapots. There is a reason that part of a boy's fencing lessons is how to walk and sit while wearing a sword. Taking it off is not an option either, from a safety standpoint of not having direct control at all times.

I know they look cool, but its just a liability in the end. My professional opinion.

Just out of curiosity though, is the pictured smallsword what you were planning on carrying? Its a pretty costume piece.

I’d suggest practicing wearing the sword first before inflicting it on other people. It’s actually pretty bad when the clueless cosplayers just strap on a sword and then proceed to knock into other people with it all day long, you don’t really want to do this with girls wearing $300-dollar dresses who will throw a fit (or a fist) if you wreck their dresses.

Find/set up a cramped space, preferably with clutter that you can actually knock over . Then spend a day or two just wearing your sword and navigating it, trying not to knock things over. Figure out how to sit down, stand up, kneel/pick things up from the floor, etc, in that cluttered space. Invite your gf over and have tea, have her sit on your left (the side with the sword), then figure out how to reach for the sugar, pour tea, etc without accidentally poking her. Spend at least 3-5 hours per practice session, it’s very easy to keep your concentration for 10 minutes, but a tea party generally lasts a few hours, make sure you can keep attention on where your sword is for at least that long.

Historically, the higher your rank, the more other people give you space to move with the sword. But, it’s 2017 and you’re wearing it to a lolita tea party, not a re-enactment scene, so there’s going to be a fair number of girls crowding around not giving you space, hence the practice with cramped spaces. Usually you’ll find it easier to keep the sword as close to your leg as possible so it doesn't stick out or swing around knocking into other people/things.

On the note of cosplayers, you might get a little bitching for carrying a prop around (same kind of bitching we give to girls carrying scepters and giant cutlery). It’s nothing really big, and if you’re cute no one cares. Do run the idea by your gf first and see how she feels about it first, though.

As someone outside the fashion, I can understand the use of the word dandy in this case from a period point of view. You basically have three "Power levels" of male fashionista in the 18thC.

The first is level "dandy". A Dandy avoids laborious or strenuous activity that isn't of an amusing nature (such as yard games). The primp and preen constantly, and dress formally and fashionably at all times. If they were to go on a party hunt, they would be wearing a designer made hunting outfit and designer boots.

Next is the "fop". Fops tend to the somewhat prissy and stereotypical "noble" behaviour, and dress in a more feminine and gaudy manner. The fop is the one who's wearing his wig and embroidered coat to the hunting party.

Finally, we have the "macaroni", which refers to the avant-garde, over-the-top Italian styles that border on the ridiculous. The macaroni is the one wearing a two-foot tall powdered wig, silk stockings, a rhinestone studded coat, five pounds of makeup and platform shoes to the hunting party.

Pic is an accurate reproduction of an actually macaroni from the 1760s.

your infodump is appreciated, but in this case, the egl-communitu use of the term arose from a misinterpretation, a la kodona, to refer to a companion style for lolita fashion. when someone suggests "dandy" for an EGL meetup, they think they're suggesting a Japanese fashion, not a thriving global subculture that has 0 ties to lolita.

Firstly, whats your budget? Look to spend at least $120+shipping on a nice dress-only piece. Pieces of a more robust nature will cost more.

Secondly, brass or steel furniture? I would suggest to stick to various styles of 18thC smallswords, and avoid military designs. I can give links if desired.

>get your backside hauled off by the cops for 'carrying bladed weaponry'.

In Britbongistan, sure. In the US, any adult can legally open carry any length of blade anywhere that is not government property or private property that has a posted no weapon policy/you are requested to not carry.

Further, you get more leeway when dressed in clothing that can be mistaken for reenactment garb.

Its still an inconvenience though, from a practical standpoint.

Its ok if you want to look like a child who's wearing his brother's hand-me-downs.

If the have a wide cuff, that cuff is to fit tight to the calf. If not, such as your pic and my pic here, itbus to be fitted at the knee. A man's muscular and shapely calf is downright sexy in 18thC fashion, showing he dances, rides horses and fences. It was such a big deal to the ladies, that padded calf falsies and special workouts were in vogue.

Excellent pic BTW.

I'm sad "KERAkko" (Kera magazine-style, close to synonymous with what people now call #jfash) never caught on in the West. It's very dated now that social media has beat out magazines, but was a good word for talking to people who wouldn't hear "lolita" well.

On more topic and speaking of old shit, does anyone remember a recurring (seasonal? yearly?) party in NYC with a rococo theme that was a big deal in the LJ days? Blasphemina's Closet did fashion shows there. If anyone else remembers or is better at Google than me, amazing coords came out of there.

the people in that pic are wearing common ouji style items, though Grandpa Adi is in stuff handmade by his partner. if you can style "restrained historical costume" in an ouji way, do it!

>as opposed to the usual foppish stuff that guys wear.
i don't know what guys you're even thinking of because it's so easy to find pics of rococouji--or even victoriouji(?) but that isn't relevant to this thread--that looks rather restrained.

pic related is one of Ikemen Mode's designs that they have been selling at cons. this is the brand begun by Grandpa Adi and his partner, mentioned above. it is designed by a longtime lolita who could never find ouji that fit her partner so she would just make it, and now they have this brand. it's really basic ouji stuff in basic colorways so far, and it is very similar to existing works by Japanese brands. it always confuses me when people think ouji is all pumpkin pants and mini hats; that style is a specific subset of sweet ouji. it is really common for Western oujis to be closer to 18th-century menswear than the cutesy anime boy doll style.

it really is not that uncommon, and it is easier to find ouji remniscent of 18th century fashion at contemporary meetups than it is to find lolita coords inspired by the same period. for ouji, right now, it's almost the default aesthetic.

Oh, I was thinking it was supposed to be "ojou" as in the Japanese word for a young wealthy lady and liked that implication a lot. "Oujo" is effectively "princess," right? I guess that makes sense as a counterpart to ouji.

There are a lot of examples of what I was thinking of in this thread, pretty much anything with a lot of frills or pastel colors. I don't have any real involvement with the scene and the few Lolita events I've been around were devoid of men, so I've only seen what gets posted here on /cgl/.

I'm not surprised to see a lot of cool AatP stuff, they've always been one of my favorite Lolita brands as well. (My ex was a "con lolita" and had a bunch of their stuff.)

I'm doubtful about whether I'd fit into much of their stuff, though, even if I was an unhealthy level of skinny. I was into VK and similar jfash back in the day, and even when I was showing ribs at 5'11" 130lb I just barely fit into size L jrock stuff. I'm trying to work my way down to 160 or so at the moment and I don't think my chances are good of wearing any Japanese brand stuff, even if it's male-specific ouji.

Do you think I could get away with using reenactment clothing like pic related for the stuff where size really matters, and dress it up with accessories, hats, shoes, etc. to make it more ouji? I feel like something toned down to a historical look fits my age (30) and face better, too.

For clarification, I have no idea who this man is nor do I care. My opinion is purely based on historic knowledge and personal taste. YMMV.

There is already no taper to the waist or curve bias to the breast, so like the last picture, the overcoat is going to hang of f his frame like an oversized tube.

I would also be warey of wearing actual medals, as that looks like a real award rather than a costume piece.

possibly, yeah. another thing tall dudes do is buy the vests and supplement the rest with off-brand. or if you are too broad for the men's size vests, some OTKs or a bag might help ground the coord in the realm of ouji rather than reenactment. basically, you do you, senpai. creativity shines brightest when you are under limits and constraints. stick a feather in your cap and be the prince you want to be!

also, you probably know this but Fan+Friend has some AatP dupes, and indie brands like the mentioned Ikemen Mode could also work. both these brands have a larger range of sizes than Japanese brands do.

you could also check out what technotropism does. he wears a lot of AatP but has to get creative with trousers and blouses at times. if your frame is similar to his you might be able to gauge which AatP items could fit you.

yeah, there's a lack of precedent, and people without pretty faces tend to A) be less inclined to share pics, and B) be less likely to have their pics saved and shared.

Well her dresses weren't amazing but she wasn't terrible compared to every other western brand at the time, and her quitting lolita was partially due to the backlash to that review, though I admit she handled it horribly and was very oversensitive.

I owned some of her candy violet clothing, she was my favorite of the western brands at the time.

She more or less dropped out of the lolita scene after the YEARS AND YEARS debacle, her shop started focusing on 1950s and old hollywood inspired fashion, she closed up shop when she moved with her husband and never re-opened. Now she sells pole dancing clothes and is a pole dancer. I think she got divorced too.

non-fashion-specific cons are unlikely to get your gf any profit if she only does quality 18thC blouses, most attendees are broke or young or only interested in fandom merch. a con like RuffleCon might be up her alley more, but diversifying the product would still be recommended

Pick related. Its a mild Bergamot Pekoe. I prefer it with a dash of rose water, white sugar and cream.

>Any guides to hosting?
Amazingly, no. I really should look some up.

>Do you have a tea set?
Yup, and a full silver tray serving to go with it.

>What do you have and do aside from tea?
Depends. If its just tea, then cookies, cream puffs and dried fruit/nuts are the order, though an ajoinment offering of hummus or cheese and crackers may be on the table. If its a luncheon tea, then the sky is the limit.

As for the "do" part, a game of cards is always welcome. I'd love to have a poetry reading or music recital.

I think AP and Baby both releasing this many poofmonsters this/last year might be a factor as well -- most of the dresses look more at home in a historical setting than a candy store/graveyard, so with all the girls that bought these dresses, makes sense to schedule some photo opportunities at a place where the background fits the dress.

When most people talk steampunk, they typically mean science fiction psuedo-Victorian/Edwardian, when in reality, the genera is both widely populated and nebulous with lots of crossover. For the sake of this conversation, we'll keep it narrowed to the psuedo-Victorian/Edwardian mishmash that defines the public image.

This cultural and technological timeframe is heavily involved in the name itself. STEAM refers to the rapid advancement of technology to the point of insanity, with industrialization and change for their own sake, and with little regard to risk involved or research. Unrestrained science and industry, both fantastic and horrifying. Mass produced sulfa antibiotics, at the same time a heroine based baby soothing tonic. etc.

PUNK refers to the social climate. It is the last death throes of classicism as the rule, but not without being taken to extremes. The unrestrained development of technology and war can make and lose fortunes in a night. Upward mobility and falling from grace is not the rarity it was before. For newcomers to reach the levels of the uppercrust, and for the nobles to stay noble, the now industrially supercharged beast of society my be fed through colonial expansion for resources, and increased oppression of those below you to stay on top. The lines of class were both blurring and being cut deeper, and this causes upheaval and revolt. Everyone wants a piece of the pie.

That all sounds really cool, yeah?

99% of "Steampunk" has NONE OF THAT. Its just sepia tones, vintage store bowlers, and hot gluing your grandpa's antique watch from the Great war onto a cheap pair of spraypainted welding goggles. As a fashion, its mishmash bullshit of every modern time period, and nothing looks like it has any aesthetic thought put into it. There is no culture. There is no thought. It is hollow and meaningless as a genre and as a fashion.

Fuck steampunk.
