It's said that Gothic Lolitas have decreased, but what happened is that something that was originally underground climbed up to the overground and due to the media etc that lacked understanding of it, Gothic Lolitas that were somewhat off/wrong increased! Now it simply returned to being a culture inhabited by people who actually love Gothic. This world (I.e. scene/culture) is forever...

medieval anon here.
Moitié's more subtle and more EGA lines usually are easier to go for the medieval inspired aesthetics because they borrow from the vampire&goth aesthetics (dungeons, coffins, candles, etc), which is a revivalism of romantism and yadda yadda. Basically MmM non printed pieces also tend to give out that stern but mysterious vibe a lot, often seen in gothic revivals and twists on the medieval dress. The puff sleeves, long skirts, the lace corset bodice, focus on materials and cuts. All of this isn't really a thing nowadays, even with prints like mozarabic chant (which is a masterpiece btw) and the book of kiels print medieval inspired is usually more of a print thing rather than a cut thing. Indie and taobao brands also tend to pick on it mostly, whereas main japanese brands stick to the victorian-1900'sdoll sillouette and add a print. They do innovate here and there but we can all agree it's all about the prints nowadays, so of course they don't want to risk it with different cuts. Also because the medieval silhouette allows borrows from a more toned down cut even at its richest, and longer skirts, designers prefer to advance a few centuries and go for the clutching pearl drama and oppulence of the renaissance, thus tudorsian, elizabethean and borgian inspired dresses are easier to work into a popular OTT lolita dress. Baroque isn't as common but a lot of people tie in baroque with rococo.

OFC I may not be entirely correct, afterall if you browse older street snaps you find aristogratic and gothic coords that are heavily medieval inspired, especially since the middle ages and the preraphaelites aesthetic was so big on the goth movement from the 70's/80's.

TLDR early lolita fashion wasn't called gothic and lolita for no reason. It drew inspo from the victorian-antique doll aesthetics on one side, and the aristocratic/interview with the vampire/goth dungeon on the dark side, which itself piggybacked on the gothic revivals.

Just a couple of additional points here. What you're referring to as 'Tudorsian' and Elizabethian comes across as awkward wording. What people refer to as a Tudor dress is actually a French gown, popular in Henry VIII's court. Attire worn in this period is usually referred to as Henrician. Both Henrician and Elizabethian attire fall under Tudor attire, as Elizabeth I was herself a part of the Tudor dynasty. Even within Elizabethan attire, you get an evolution from the French gown silhouette to the later, much wider cartwheel-like shape of the skirts at the hips, a look created with farthingales - hooped underskirts. It's the earlier Elizabethan line which suits itself better to being an inspiration for lolita coords. For reference, Im involved in 16th century based historical reenactment.

No worries. Just trying to help add a bit more detail on the historical terminology. You're doing a pretty good job so far on showing the differences and how they can inspire lolita, some bits more than others. The Henrician and early Elizabethan gowns lend themselves quite well to lolita inspiration as they share an a-line skirt shape, and the split skirt style front is also common in lolita. In the Middle Ages, the silhouette was less exaggerated and lacked padding and shaped underskirts thus why a reason that some Jgoth/Aristocrat styles are better suited for inspiration from this time than lolita. The Renaissance 'Italian' fashions, such as during the time of the Borgias are a huge minefield to navigate, and both styles I guess can draw inspiration from these times, depending on what City States you are looking at - the styles varied a lot between the regions of what is now Italy (which itself is only about 200 years old now). The fashions in Rome tended to be much more modest and less extravagant than Florence or Venice. In around 1520 to 1560, all black dresses with golden veils were very popular. For Renaissance inspired coords, a good couple of sources to look at are The Realm of Venus and The Anea Gallery. The Tudor Tailor is a good source for Tudor/Elizabethan costumes for starting reference. You finally also have to remember that tv shows or films such as The Tudors, The Other Boleyn Girl, or The Borgias take lots of liberties with historical accuracies for ease of wear by the actors, and for storytelling purposes,

and i really thank you for that! Yes I agree tv/movies end up popularizing certain things which were not as extravagant at the time (esp colors, materials) but of course if lolita designers look into these epochs they will look ino popular media (hence why the boleyn girl surface spell pulled out etc). There are so many fantasy/medieval inspired movies that look like nothing they would wear at all for instance.
I called Venitian/Borgian fashion "Italy" just to make it easier (I didn't want to dwell too much into history despite europe's borders being a mess well into the xx century).
But thank you so so much for sharing this! Always a pleasure to talk history and I garantee UK fashion history isn't really my forte, so I really appreciate your input anon!
I realize most medieval inspirations have to stick with patterns, materials or prints, since the cuts require a more aristocrat or long skirt to go with it instead of the common a-line skirt. I feel like big brands and mosly indie brands are more likely to experiment nowadays, even if little by little and within "safer" sillouettes. Especially with all the folkloric, arabesque, tarot, inspired prints coming out. A gal can dream!

You're very welcome, Anon! I'm far from an expert on the history of fashion, but since I started getting involved with reenactment/living history, I've been learning various bits and find it fascinating to see the differences between fact vs the fiction. I likewise use 'Italy' for simplicity's sake as it's easier to explain. Out of curiousity, when and where abouts are your main area of interest?
With lolita pieces I own I tend to favour longer length, non print items that can be worn in an Aristocrat influenced style. I admit that Aristo, both in its make and female versions, are what I wear mainly.

I'm more into ancient civilizations and the middle ages up until the renaissance. After that it's rococo, the regency period or early 1800s, the edwardian and early XX century the eras I favor the most. Especially mediterranean, slavic and middle eastern countries. A few years ago I rekindled my love with the lolita fashion especially its old school elements. All the experimentation and such, but I quite love what some newer brands are doing as well, as I love history and love seeing historical pieces! It's funny bcause I used to be so much into sweet when I started but now I prefer more somber, staple gothic lolita 2002 looks or anne of the green gables coords. Simple yet I love the historic, literary and goth influences. I feel like all the collabs lately have been really expensive, from $600+ making them not want to sink that much into it? That Cardcaptor Sakura one was a great example everyone was hyped for but no one wanted to pay that much.

This one is really nice, but I'd be surprised if I ever saw anyone wearing it. Making far too expensive unicorn items is such a waste of these collabs.

Not that anon, but I went to regalia (first and last tpc event) and I had a silver ticket. The gift back was mostly crammed with advertisements, some shitty bath bombs that were the size of a one pence coin, a notebook that was literally a piece of card stapled to about 10 pages of A4 paper, a couple of badges that said regalia on, a cheap compact mirror, and an innocent world bow that was on sale for months because they couldn't sell it.

Most of the stuff in it was like the shit you'd get in a kid's party favours bag if that party kid had trekked through a village fair and picked up every pamphlet and business card that they could.

Haenuli's older stuff was very long in the torso, plus I can put in the obvious rec for custom-sized Taobao. IW sell longer-length dresses and I think they're longer in the torso too. IIRC JetT don't tend to be highwaisted either. Meta frequently release low-waisted cuts but with the way they are (flaring out before they join the skirt to accomodate hips, pic related) I feel like they'd still look weird on a very long torso if you wanted it to sit at your natural waist rather than create an illusion your waist was higher than it was.

Long torso and busty here but I've learned to just accept that most things that aren't custom-sized are going to end up high-waisted on me (sad because I have a tiny waist and having the "waist" of a dress consistently flare out from my ribs makes me look a lot fatter than I really am).

To me, it are the details that are important. There are a few things, that instantly turn me down
>random cats slapped into a print when they are not the main motif. The print would be nice on its own, but cats instantly add an immature touch to it, wich I don't like
>brand logo all over the print that stand out, especially with Innocent World since their brand name sounds cringy and age playish as fuck
>Engrish or cringy French as part of the design
>pleats hiding important parts of the print
>all over prints, for busy prints I prefer a plain bodice

What are your favorite motifs and what would you like to see that you haven't so far?
My favourite motifs are florals and books. I'd like to see more ocean themed prints by the classic brands. A sea turtle or axolotl print would be cute. Also ship paintings.

Man, I could write a rant on all the annoying things on some prints I dislike. To keep things short, though

#1 - the artwork must be good. Pls no amoeba blobs with KAWAY googly eyes or lazy flat shapes. Goes double for sweet-leaning brands, I don’t know why they think googly eyes make up for lack of detail.
- A little hard, but please, make it something where we can see the effort/skill. It doesn’t matter if you’re cutting and pasting free-use vintage graphics, chose the ones that (a)fit/work together, and (b)actually look like the original were painted/drawn with some skill. I’d chose a cut-and-paste vintage graphics dress over one that was painstakingly handdrawn if the handdrawn version looks unskilled/lazy
- Not too much blank open spaces. Looking at you, Imai Kira. Why does your artwork look so good and then Charlotte Bear has this blank wall for background. They’re lolita bears, they deserve cute wallpaper, jeez.
- For colours, please for the sake of future lolitas, can we stop using that garish bright pink and peach that half the sweet taobao brands seem to use by default.
- Go for a consistent colour scheme, don’t just paint random colours on. There’s a lot of easy existing colour schemes that you can stick to — pastels, jewel tones, neutrals, monochromatic, B+W, etc.
- Don’t reinvent the wheel. Like itas, you gotta learn to stick to the basic design rules before you go breaking them willy nilly. Look at what other brands have done, learn from their mistakes and their triumphs. “Special” doesn’t mean you’re good or worth the price.

Huh, it became a rant after all. Hope you don’t mind.

For subject matter, cliche ones are easier because it’s easy to accessorise with things from another brand. If your forte is accessories to begin with then I could see pushing an unusual subject as a good thing. Or if you’re doing JetJ style and nothing is meant to go together anyway.

Classical lolita here with only 4 prints to her name, but.

I like either vibrant border prints or subtle all-over ones that are detailed and/or beautifully done, but not busy. I rarely fall in love with prints because too many are pastel blobs (AP's Daydreamer Bed), too cartoony (AP's Dolly Cat), or way too much is going on (Haenuli's Lolita Detective).

I like unique subject matter, which Meta does best of the majors brands (Daydreaming Goldfish). Prints that are detailed/lovely without being busy are the forte of classical brands (IW's Rose Stained Glass, MM's Perfume Bottle) and the biggest thing that'll draw me to a print.

My favorite motifs are books (a la Jane Marple's Fairytale Book rather than AP's Memorial Library), uncommon animals (a la Li Paros's Axolotl's Treasure), and stained glass (a la IW's Rose Stained Glass rather than MmM's Stained Glass). I do have a weakness for bunnies since I have two, but I like understated buns (Peppermint Fox's Bon Voyage) over huge stylized ones (AP's Marshmallow Bunny).

I'd love more turquoise like BTSSB's Fairy Topialium.

Not just the print to add to other anon's excellent rant, but also the dress cut. if the cut impairs the print (like hiding it with pleats or a bad skirt drape) or makes it unflattering, that's stupid. the cut of the jsk/op shouldn't be generic so the print is the only selling point either. a good print isn't a reason to have lazy design elsewhere. a good example of dropping the ball in this imo is the recent haenuli notre dame print. i think the cut of the skeleton dress she did is uaf, but at least that tried to make the dress and print a bit unique. ap is also suffering from lazy sack dress syndrome lately too.

>How do you decide it is time to sell a dress?

The sales season is going great for me lately. Because of that I considered putting up for sale some items I don't wear so often and are not dream-dress material.
Specially dresses that I have bought to try something different, to make a coord I had in mind. However, whenever I have had a chance to go all out Lolita, I rather wear my most beloved pieces, leaving the "creative" ones left behind, unused.
These pieces are not even plain enough to wear them in a daily basis. Talking about sweet or plain dresses that happened to be too shiny (late plain AP trend to make everything shny).
I don't know if it is a good idea to sell them before having the time to experiment enough with them. I have them stored for at least a year,

What would you do?

My rule of thumb is if I haven't touched it in a year or thought about it, it's time to go. Unless it's a special occasion dress where you wear it for a specific event/holiday, and you aren't wearing them it's probably a good idea to sell.

Print quality should be crisp and art should be good-quality and not flat. Scale is very important - it shouldn't look oversized or be too small to see details on the dress (a lot of Taobao brands fall down on scale). Also seen too many good prints previews destroyed by a bad cut. Colours should be in a palette that work nicely together and with other common lolita colours - some of Meta's prints are so garish and tacky in the way they use unusual bright colours. Colour I think doesn't get enough attention is soft green à la Tea Time Nostalgia - it's really pretty and works well with pinks, browns and lots of other colours.

Don't mind subtle brand names/logos on prints but they can really be ruined by cringy text. Baby the Stars Shine Bright is bearable, socks and dresses that just say BABY in giant letters are things I will never buy (even when it's not a cringey name I think giant logos often look tacky anyway, like they do in normie fashion). Don't agree with >>9421629 that Innocent World is an embarrassing name but I think twice before buying Moitie prints that have the Elegant Gothic Lolita Aristocrat Vampire Romance text since I don't want "lolita" on my dress. Or like I liked that Chess Story (?) academic striped lolita dress but didn't buy because I thought the "Mon cher profeseur" text was a bit creepy.

Has anyone else who's been a lolita a few years gone through style changes, and how often? I know it's common for people to switch from one style to another over time (ex. OTT sweet->otome, sweet->oldschool, classic->sweet) but I've changed multiple times and feel really disconnected from the styles I used to like just a year ago. Looking back over old wishlists I don't like most of the items on there (I used to love early 2010s AatP and now it does absolutely nothing for me). I would have been really excited for a Cat in Window re-release three years ago but the recent announcement left me cold. It makes me worry about how much I'm sinking into my wardrobe as my tastes change so much, especially since I know not everything I buy will be easy to sell.

For reference, I've had phases waxing and waning interest in all of the following styles/things in the past five years: jeans, punk, cybergoth, steampunk, classic, pirate, embroidery, mori girl, vintage, cult party kei, painting prints, dolly kei, sailor, gothic, oldschool, western goth, fairy kei, OTT sweet, gyaru, hime lolita, uchuu-kei, tartan, nanchatte seifuku, oldschool gothic, oldschool sweet, otome, larme, sportswear. It's not like I just have a wide range of interests, because I only tend to like two or three styles at a time and completely lose interest in or hate other things.

It's basically just a laundry list of everything and I feel inconsistent as fuck. Is this normal for someone in their early 20s? I don't think most people realise I'm this inconsistent because I've never gone off lolita and I stuck to one or two styles for wardrobe cohesion, but the range of styles I would have got into if I had the money has been jumping all over the place.

I've done that with hobbies in general. My craft room holds supplies for knitting, crochet, sewing, beading, resin, sculpey, padico stuff, decoden, soapmaking. Plus bins full of writing when I was into lucid dreaming and writing short stories. Drawn artwork is scattered around different drawers in the house. I also still own about 20 dolls I rarely play with anymore.

I enjoyed every single one of them immensely and I felt like each one taught me something new, made new friends in some hobbies and met a lot of different people. I'd say just go with it, if your personality is like this it makes more sense to maximise your personal satisfaction rather than punish yourself for liking many different things.

The money thing is a whole different issue though. The most expensive hobby I was into was BJDs and lolita, and with those I just kinda accepted that the $1000 doll I bought might not have a good resale value. For that reason I'm really reluctant to sink $$$ into my lolita wardrobe. No Cats Tea Party or Iron Gate for me, no OTT MTO rufflemonster princess dresses for me either. I figure if/when I do finally move on from lolita, whatever I can sell will be good, but I'm not counting on being able to recoup all of my money back, it's not an investment, it's thrown away play money. You gotta realise that for you, some dresses really aren't worth the price no matter how much it's your holy grail right this minute, because you'll probably change your mind and no longer like them after a couple of years. However, it's not actually hard to do, and it's really no different from being a budget lolita.

Interestingly enough, when it comes to lolita I do all the main styles except ouji and uniforms. I guess I just find everything interesting and cool.

I bought a dress from a seller that was supposed to be shipped with two day shipping and it's been a week. That alone would be understandable, but she hasn't responded to messages or emails and never gave me a tracking number. When do I start to get nervous? This is domestic shipping, btw.

I hate this, but at least that means my wallet will be spared.

Speaking of my wallet, my Daydream Bed order finally shipped today!

Would always recommend trying any headwear with different hairstyles if you think it looks weird, that often works wonders. For example, I used to think I look retarded with bigger AP bows until I understood I just needed big hair to match.

Maybe you just don't photograph well? If you think you look ok in the mirror it's probably alright, don't worry about it too much. Besides, almost everyone is very critical about their own face.

Does it kind of feel like falling into a hole as soon as the fun thing is over, and the good feels that should tide you over until the next fun thing just make everyday life even more unbearable?
I really hope you will feel better soon.

Did you get a tracking number that has spaces inbetween? If so you need to delete them or else the number will get cut off. Also are you using the Japan Post website for tracking? If it is neither of these things you should probably email them.

I usually just ask them to stop. Most of the time they awkwardly go "oh sorry" and shuffle off. The teenagers usually will be the only ones who push back, to which I call security if I can (most of the teens I see are in malls)

If I'm feeling really bold, I'll take my camera out and start taking obvious pictures of them.
I've only done this 2 or 3 times though

I like how you conveniently crop out the part where it's clearly stated that it's a custom request.

Last year I didn't go alone but ended up sat separately from my friends, everyone was really friendly and it was fine. I didn't speak to any non-vendor strangers the entire of Saturday though, so I feel like that'd be more awkward alone than Sunday would.

Yes, a shop with a policy of "We'll gladly make you one with an image of your choice." should turn away about 99% of what they'll be asked for. Nevermind that it's all in good fun for both parties, and no one is being bamboozled about image theft because the customer is the one that suggests the source for this one-off item that isn't part of the regular shop stock.
