We haven't even seen the Brisbane or Sydney finalists or entrants yet, so it's hard to say. If Sam enters again with her fairy queen, I would say Sam. If not, then I am sure a Sydney or Brisbane entrant has a good chance. The other states' finalists aren't as strong, Melbourne has been the most impressive so far

Where can I buy packs of craft foam in Melbourne? Spotlight doesn't stock the multipacks anymore, just shitty little packs of 2 for like $3 (which is a huge ripoff).

Hey Anon's, Anon here that wrote the facepaint paragraph from the last thread. My background is miniature painting with airbrushing/washes/pigments. Do you think it would be worth it just running basic workshops for cosplayers at con's?

As someone who paints models as small as a thumbnail to as large as a 3 year old, it really irks me when I see cosplays where a bit of airbrushing would make it great. I'm all to often seeing terrible colours from bunnings bought sprays, or awful blending from thick acrylics from lyncraft that reduce the quality of the cosplay significantly. Do you think there's interest/a market for basic classes rather then say the wetta level? Or is it a case of everyone is too stuck in their garage.

I think there's a fear in the community that airbrushing is prohibitively expensive. If you can either dispel that fear or show a better way to paint with existing materials then I think you'd do wonders. Key point is to make it easy to follow though. Far too many people in cosplay want to be spoon fed, which is frustrating but necessary if you want to make an impact and reduce the number of shitty paint jobs.

I guess it's what they define as expensive. I've seen $1000 Type 40 shields at Cons pretty common(I know at least 3 Brisbane cosplayers with one) so 225 for a reusable airbrush and compressor are not big when compared to that. Granted the above lady and I think a store bought Cortana suit that's what? 96$ usd; that set up will seem pricey.

Paint isn't expensive; 5$ per 17mil which covers a hell of a lot of surface.

I understand spoonfed well, my mainstay commission clients can't even do 2 coats and a wash then pick out details; the problem is how finicky an airbrush is, they clog regularly then you have to disassemble the housing and clean it(about 5-10 minutes).

I've included an example of a current project that's toddler size, using a 3 colour system(red then dark red ring then umber brown recess) makes an armour plate pop then just doing a straight colour and we're talking 10 min of work. I guess that's what annoys me is that it's so simple.

I have 2 spare brush set ups, but need to work out how to set it up with oz cc/nova. Costs are an issue too unless I make it ticketed entry. I really just want standards raised since their are good cosplayer said being let down by poor tool choices

Are you a cosplayer yourself? If yes, maybe do a few videos of a piece you're working on and explain the process. And if you aren't, possibly doing videos or panels where you partner with a cosplayer and show them how to do it on one of their projects. Could help with spoon feeding issue, since I know a lot of people can't figure out how to take an idea from one kind of tutorial and apply it to another project. I know far too many people who will only search for things with cosplay or the specific character in the search terms, things like airbrushing already have communities with tutorials and you just need to transfer the skills.

I'm definitely in favour of you doing this though!

I was until last year. Ran into some of the social drama and it made me walk away hard due to fear of lynching due to a psychotic cosplayer using her social media presence. Even shutting her down with proof she was lying didn't stop randoms from having go's at me.

Slowly edging back into it now and learning a lot more about creation techniques such as sculpting/resin casting props, body suits etc to combine with my painting skills.

Truth be told, I'm honestly looking to get back into it to be social with nerds again about pop culture/all things nerd again so I figured I'd offer my skills and enjoy every one just having a better experience with the con.

Youtube tutorial wise, I might look at doing it. Just starting on the Judgement armour from WoW so I might do a video log of the entire build then share it once the series is finished. Also have to help out my new partner doing her first cosplay of Athena's Champion WW so I guess I can include that(like how to make old gold worbla armour for less then $100).

If it helps anyone in this thread right now, there's a sponsor of Nova called Ironlak, they're at most of the westfields and their colours are top notch and only $8.00 a can. It can be a little thick but it's good enough for miniatures if you have a deft touch so armour should be ok. It's a sugar/alcohol mix and smells pretty fruity but I've had no issues so far. It's normally used for Graffiti work so it's quite hardly to wear and tear that we all go through plus replacing it is dirt cheap without comprising quality.

I'll try and throw a few pictures up here to see how people like it for a basic tutorial and I'd love to hear feedback. As long as it helps a few people, it's made me happy

Looking at the hemline of the dress there seems to be a stitch straight across above the scallops which could be what the lace is sewn onto, and since AP tends to sew their lace onto the lining layer, that makes it pretty possible for them to be replicas. I don't own Milky Planet though so I can't confirm.

If they're not replicas... I don't see how anybody can buy a several hundred dollar dress (Milky Planet resells for ~$130 some places but still), and think "I know! I'm going to wear this to a bar/rave where it'll be super easy for it to get torn/stained/ruined!"

Can someone explain to me how the cosplay competition system works? Like state, regional or what not. I've noticed Supanova hold some but then OZCC also hold some... and then there is the World Cosplay Summit... I'm not sure how it all goes about. Sorry if nub question

The competitions are pretty much always organised by the specific cons themselves, with a few exceptions like C4 being at OZCC the other week, and WCS is a worldwide competition based in Japan.

The big cons tend to have two different comps, the Big professional level one (supanova has MNCC, ozcc has championships of cosplay) that pick a winner to represent each state in the national finals.

The other comp, and the comp that smaller cons like Animaga tend to run, are just small ones that only give your costume a title and sometimes a small prize, OZCCs cosplay active has visa gift cards as prizes, and Animaga just has little trophies iirc?

with local comps typically being a novice level, and the national and international comps being for professional level cosplayers. The reason why most cons have comps on one, if not both days of the weekend is because it's just a regular event, like panels and guest signings.

WCS has multiple rounds before they whittle down the candidates to appear at SMASH. Many of the teams drop out prior due to illness.

Having won competitions previously helps round out your portfolio but it isn't a requirement in the portfolio round.

You provide work in progress picks at a later stage. The stricter requirement is the skit component. I think you need like a 10 minute skit.

I've never looked into competing in WCS, but afaik, no. The Madman National just ends at the national final, but the OZCC Championship winner goes on to compete in America I think? The winner of the Australian WCS preliminary at SMASH goes on to compete in the finals in japan, each country has its own WCS prelim at a single chosen convention

I feel like SMASH was chosen because its a big anime focused con, it's been running for a long time, and it doesn't tour around the country like Supa/Ozcc/Madman do. It's likely that the organizers of the whole thing decided it'd be there rather than all the cons fighting over who gets it (especially considering supa already had it's own big comp, and OZCC only started in 2012)

I'm pretty sure any cosplay can enter, but most entrants tend to be from Japanese media since SMASH is an anime con, most of the other countries host their prelims at anime cons, and the prize is essentially a trip to Japan.
