Reposting this here because i'm actually really impressed with anon:
There's actually a lot of ways that weight gain/weight retension can happen, and sometimes they can happen at the same time, which leads to extreme weight gain and inability to lose weight like an average person does.

The SSRI medication known as Paxil, along with SSRI meds in general, can add up to 50lbs onto a person's weight during the first months taking them, leading to a weight gain of up to 5lbs a week.

Metabolic and hormonal disorders can cause weight gain like anon said. Certain types of pituitary cysts or tumors, hypothyroidism, PCOS or poly-cystic ovary syndrome, can all be either low-lying and undiagnosed or misdiagnosed, or completely medically mismanaged by a doctor in the case of hypothyroidism. Type 2 diabetes can also be medically mismanaged with weight gain and weight retension being a result.

Many commonly prescribed prescription medications, including some asthma inhalers and medications, can have extreme weight gain and resitant weight retention as a side effect.
When any of those combine with other weight gain or weight retension factors, you can experience extreme gain or an inability to lose weight despite diet and exercise changes and improvements.

A key point with any medication for a condition with weight gain as a symptom, such as hypothyroidism: if you're not losing weight like an average person with diet or exercise, then your medication dosages are being mismanaged and you either need a different dosage or medication.

I like them so much I have them in 3 colours, I'd get pink and ivory if I can be sure they actually match AP pink and burando ivory.

They're made from opaque chiffon, so there's no chance of slightly unmatching lace (Infanta underskirts has this issue). They have a nice width to them, wider than IW underskirts. Their biggest downside is that they're very, very, very heavy -- heavier than most of my dresses, I use a poofmonster Snowfield petti under it because the Surface Spell petti doesn't do anything. One extra perk is that they're stiff enough to have a nice shape even without a petticoat, so you can toss on a normie top and wear them on normal days (if you don't mind being a little poofy).

Going to post a differing opinion. The pintucks on the ones I have seen are not even and the chiffon has a "cheap" fast fashion F21 feel. The weightiness is too much for most petticoats and makes the hemline look really messy- I wouldn't buy one again. Sold mine.

The underskirts from Vietnamese indie brands (that whole lot of them I can't recall all the names) are more worth the cash though dealing with them can be a pain.

Also- the colours from LittleDipper run really badly.

What is the most flattering brand for hourglass figures? Talking about measurements small enough to fit into most brands but with a big difference between waist/underbust and bust. don't think there's a particular brand for you, you just have to go cut by cut.

I've heard MM is really hourglassy, which is why it often looks awkward on people who are small enough to fit it, but I don't own any.

Honestly I have a large bust size, small band size and small waist and I wear a lot of pieces with corset lacing and shirring and go Taobao custom when I want unshirred pieces. I own AP, Baby, IW, VM, MmM and ETC and none of it shows my figure to best effect if it's unshirred, even if it doesn't look awkward (like, it looks like it fits but actually the waist is way larger than my real waist is, or the waist is hitting on my ribcage even though it's not supposed to be a high-waisted cut). A lot of brand skirts have very small waist measurements as well (particularly Moitie) so if you like skirts you can do skirt + custom-sized blouse.

>> No.9586307

>>9586284
Like >>9586298 said, it's less by brand and more by cut. Brands usually matter more for your preferred substyle to wear. And additionally to what that anon said, look for dresses with corset lacing in the back, you can adjust them to your liking, and avoid high waist cuts, look for cuts that emphasize your natural waist instead.

I think this is cute but I absolutely abhor those shoes. I see the bunny motif, but the puffs just lend themselves to double bunny tails visible from the front. it's just weird.

on another note: I was just thinking, would it be useful to have a site or gallery that just displayed releases in chronological order--not as detailed as lolibrary but just to keep track of/compare each season's releases from each brand? just something a little quicker and readily accessible than going through a GLB. it'd be great to be able to better spot the trends and evolutions over time.

other good brands are Atelier Boz, surface spell, and broken doll (the latter two are taobao).
Some advice I have is to NEVER incorporate pretty much ANY western modern normie gothic elements into gothic coords, like thin brows and facial piercings, fishnets, neon, etc because it looks retarded.

Well with so many duds this year they finally found the money maker. Besides I much prefer frequent re-releases of a popular dress rather than dealing with crazy scalper prices.

The actual brand gets the money, and actual fans of the dress get their dress. I can't stand people who would buy dresses just because they were "popular" or just to resell. Buying inflated secondhand doesn't help support your favorite brand.

It also creates much less demand for replicas, as the dresses are more available and reasonably priced.

I don't get why people are so annoyed at all of the Holy Lantern and Fancy Hospital re-releases when years ago people were dying for them and complaining that brands don't listen to their clientele.

Dropdown waist are awesome, normal waist are fine. Don't take anything higher, or you'll look like you'll have more weight than you really do.

I really love when brands have a corset build in, especially when it's steel boning. Corset lacing and waist ties (when closed tightly around your body, not those really loose ones) are great friends, as they allow you to accentuate your waist. Corset skirts are also great, unless your breast are enormous (as corset skirts tend to make them look bigger in proportion than a normal dress does).

I don't know what you name under "modern goth fasion" (can be either the " all black hipster look" or just "gothic like it's often worn now opposed to how it was worn in the "90"). If you wear victorian goth, you would defiantly love Atelier Pierrot.

Whether or not OP is good at makeup has no bearing on the quality of Misako's makeup, which isn't great. The lipstick is patchy and doesn't look evenly-applied, the shape of the eyeliner wings are wobbly and don't seem symmetrical (though this might be because of camera angle), the eyeshadow doesn't look blended, and her lashes are still red from the shadow because she doesn't seem to have applied any mascara.

Why do you expect people to have almost impossible levels of self control? Even if you've been on a medication that increases your appetite before, you can't expect the next person so have the same exact reaction you did to the medication. People metabolize medications at different rates so just because you were able to have better self control when it came to your appetite. Also it's very hard to adjust calories in vs calories out when your body has to acclimate to a new medication. By the time you figure shit out the damage is already done and you've gained weight. That can then put someone into a depression which then compounds the effect and then stress eating can occur and even more weight is gained.

I need help finding a seamstress that can cope with extremely old, delicate lolita items. I bought an ancient OP a couple of years ago that turned out to be made of very fragile fabric and tore when I first wore it, and I've never been able to find anyone who could repair it, since it would need patching with a similar material. Even an ugly job would be okay as long as it stabilised it and didn't do more damage, since the tears are large but in fairly unnoticeable places - under the arm and next to where one of the waist ties attaches. It's a really lovely dress, a dream item of mine, and if it turned out to genuinely be too fragile to wear I'd consider just displaying it on a mannequin in my room.

I always see people suggest looking for a local seamstress, but I've tried and it's just dry cleaners used to basic dress alterations or taking in a pair of jeans, not the kind of care ripped oldschool velveteen would need. I know a few local lolitas who sew and they all flat-out told me the repair was beyond their skill and they don't feel confident doing it, but there's only one indie brand in my country and they don't seem much better. How would I know if someone really has the skill and I'm not going to get a Truly Darling-style mess? The only people whose reputation and construction I know enough about to trust are US-based and I'm in Europe - I don't want to spend more than the dress cost on international shipping, the repair and potentially customs.

I even considered selling it to someone who might be able to take the risk to fix it themselves, but with this level of damage I doubt I could sell it for $40 and I paid over $130 + shipping when I bought it.

You might be able to get away with uploading directly for a couple of years but you might run out of storage after that, depending on how big your wardrobe is and what sort of file sizes you're uploading. I looked it up and it's definitely a 1 GB limit. I might do it just for next year anyway, although LJ's photostream is always a pain in the ass to use. Last time I used it I had to manually change every image's security to public as it wouldn't allow me to do it on upload and was defaulting to friends-only. The Castle Mirage special set in pink is actually printed missing a colour, ditto the premium CDC set. And the lace is often different or cheaper.

I don't think these any reason to look for a lolita-specific tailor, because let's be honest those are rarely at a professional skill level and it's not like velvet is exclusive to lolita. Asking around at vintage shops is a good idea as long as they're real vintage shops, not the kind of shops that sell early 2000's fast fashion to hipsters and just call it vintage to raise the price. Look for shops that sell 70s and older. Ask around, maybe join a Facebook group or two. Try to track down a legit garment restorationist and hope that they're affordable. I once tracked down a seamstress specialising in 40s/50s era tailoring and she fixed a dress right up for me. It cost €100 but considering that the dress was older than my parents and had a giant rip down the back, that wasn't so bad.

For some of them it's okay to wear knee-length dresses with tights, show their arms, wear makeup etc. but for others even showing the contour of any part of their leg is haram so they have to wear baggy pants and/or floor-length skirts. Same with the hijab itself, some are allowed to style it in a voluminous, fashionable way while others are supposed to wear it very tightly wrapped around their head with zero ornamentation. >>9588338 and >>9588339 would be considered unacceptable among the Muslims in my neighbourhood.

Ok so I'm going to come waaaay out of left field with this but this was a problem in my old com so I'm going to warn you anyways.

Are you actually interested in lolita because you want to get one outfit to make your bf smile, or is your bf forcing you to get into lolita?

We had a problem where a specific dude kept dating different young alt fashion girls and forcing them to wear lolita because he had a creepy living doll fetish and wanted them to be his perfect little doll.

So uh, if you're in a situation like that, please run away now.

If I'm totally off base with that, then what I recommend is joining your local community on facebook and maybe hitting up some local used sales, and joining the big sisters groups on facebook where they can give you more personal advice. And if you're only going for one outfit, why not just buy something cheap from Bodyline?

"otome" is also the Japanese word for "maiden". Shit was gonna be confusing from day one.

It's like naming a fashion "girl":
>I like girl clothes
>I'm really into girly fashion
>Lolita is so girly
>To the lolita girls
>girly girls in lolita?
>what's the difference between girl and lolita?

Cherry on the cake is some Japanese shops are already trying to market girly kei as a style (I don't think it's quite the same as otome or lolita, but they're certainly using it as a buzzword to bring in customers)

Not a Londoner but I go up for the Tea Party Club events once or twice a year and my general experience of London is that locals (of any race) don't usually give a shit or even stare much because they're used to seeing weird people, but tourists are a a pain in the arse. I've never been to Camden or any of the really poor parts but I've worn lolita alone in a lot of different parts of London (not just central) and generally only had trouble in tourist trap areas. Whenever I get off the Tube at a big square in the city centre I get swarmed with people with cameras, and it's really difficult to prevent them taking photos of you because some tourists don't speak much English and other tourists (esp. Americans) don't understand why you wouldn't want them to take photos and get really argumentative about it.

Outside of London you get a lot more stares but I've not had much harassment in any city I've been to, beyond the usual "Are you in a play?" etc. Majority of compliments come from white old ladies, majority of harassment comes from white teenage boys shouting stupid shit at you, PoC in general don't seem to comment either way if you're trying to make this a race thing (I'm not just saying this to be PC either, I live in an Asian area right now and I get a lot of stares but I've genuinely never had anyone Asian shout shit at me or say shit to me apart from one old lady complimenting my "vintage dress").

As spring passes, the problem that always comes about is, “I don’t have any friends. What should I do?” In April, the classes change and it is a different environment, so with that oblivious look on your face, before you know it, the people you haven’t met have all formed their own groups. Without even realizing it, you end up alone. When summer comes along you’re almost released from this problem, because you’ve gotten together with your friends for a fun summer vacation, but even during this season there are those who cannot make any friends.

>> No.9588931

>>9588924
Such people can only give up. Continue to live alone, with strength. Young ladies do not need friends. Young ladies are sublime, isolated things. The typical behavior of young boys’ heroes is to form a group…Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry, Getter Robo combined three people, even Jules Verne’s novel “Two Years Holiday” had to have fifteen boys in it, none of them independent. But little girls are different. Alice had her Wonderland adventure by herself. When Anju and Zushiou were kidnapped by Sansho Dayu, Anzu stayed there, alone, and allowed for her little brother to escape. Then there’s Meg-chan; “They say she is a person who can do anything, the little witch Meg is alone” is how the song goes.

>> No.9588932

>>9588924
Young ladies have an “absolute existence.” “Absolute” in this case means they cannot be compared to anything else, since there is this “uniqueness,” they don’t need any friends. Just like Ken-san from a yakuza movie, young ladies are stylishly alone. “But if I just opened my heart I could make friends,” they say, but you can’t open your heart to strangers without it being wasted on them. A young lady is like a brilliant sparkling jewel, and it would be reckless to allow people to see that. The easily broken if touched glasswork has a hard shell covering it. Behind this cold, tightly bound disposition, perhaps from far away someone will stare and think, what a beautiful, pitiful young girl. But this type of worldy, useless flattery is unnecessary. You should also be okay with it if they say, “What an arrogant child” or “What a melancholy child.” If you want to make friends because you can’t endure eating lunch by yourself, realize how stupid that sounds. Just like the gorgeous aristocrat “Butterfly Wife” Ryuzaki Reiko from “Ace wo Nerae!”, lonliness is always a queen’s sidekick. As for me, my only close friends are my TV and my houseplant.

IMO it's different when the grocery store is on your way back from work/uni/meets/whatever, since you're walking past there anyway. For me, it's kind of out of town and in the opposite direction to anywhere else I go so I'm basically making a special trip, which means I carry a lot because it's only worth going once a week. When I lived with a supermarket a similar distance way but on my way back from work it was easier to make multiple trips a week so I could carry less and wear whatever.

In my experience as well, supermarkets that are in a busy area (like city centre) feel more accepting because people assume you're on your way to/from somewhere like a party and pay less mind to your clothes, but when you wear unusual clothes to out-of-town ones you get worse reactions (I've worn otome to the supermarket a couple of times and just wearing a dress grabs stupid amounts of attention).

You walk a mile in lolita?
Even in the summer? Do you do it in heels too?

>>9589716
It's literally never a quick trip for me even if I went every week. It's a 30 minute walk. I guess I could be lazy and take the bus for the sake of wearing lolita to the store but that seems lazy to me. I'd rather go to the store and then come home and dress up.

I also eat out a lot so yea, I don't go grocery shopping that often. Plus my work provides me food.

I was thinking of that too, they haven't stocked them in ages.

I mean, if you were Momoko you'd make huge adjustments to your lifestyle so you could wear lolita, like how the train station was a short distance from her house by bike but you can't cycle in lolita so she walks very slowly for 40 minutes instead. I'm sure she'd consider going to the supermarket five times a week instead of one so you look more elegant reasonable, or changing your diet so you never have to cook things that could get garlic, onion or oily smells in your brand. It's on you whether you consider this sort of thing worth it. OP obviously thinks all lolitas should do this, most people don't have the time or inclination.

>changing your diet so you never have to cook things that could get garlic, onion or oily smells in your brand
As someone who used to be a line cook - that isn't going to be enough. I might as well wear any apron and pray I don't miss.

People have different lives. If I had a car, I might go to the store in brand. But I hate driving so I don't do either.

I guess it depends on what you're wearing and the shoes, most importantly.

Don't wear Antaina and cheap taobao shoes if you're going to do a lot of walking. Invest in something like a good pair of well-made, leather mary janes that you have actually tried on in a shoe store. Even better if it's broken in a little. If you're capable, bring them as backup shoes whenever you can.

>> No.9590198

>>9590190
No? Why are you guys like insistent that I wear it to go shopping?

I like walking fast. The less clothing I'm wearing the less likely it is for me to sweat, which is why wearing layers and then walking a mile to the store, and then carrying 30 lbs of groceries home is not a great idea.

My lifestyle is just different from yours.

Also, way to not address how it's 100 degrees outside where I live. Even if I walked slowly it would be awful and I would be sweating.

Except it's really difficult to find quality leather Mary Janes in colours other than black or that would suit styles other than oldschool or classic. I have a black pair that I like and are well broken-in (kind of a thin sole though, not good on some surfaces) and a cheaper oxblood pair that are okay but if you wear sweet you'd have a harder time. Then again, sweets can wear tea parties so I guess it's not too bad for them on the flat shoe front. In general I've had a really fucking hard time finding any gothic shoe that looks good that doesn't have a massive heel, a massive platform or both (RHS and flatforms are a compromise by gothic standards). I always live in hope of finding a really good-quality pair of Victorian-style ankle boots but I've never found a pair I really like - most of the repro vintage ones look too pointy or have too high a heel and are more "Victorian French prostitute" than "Victorian young lady", or are simply not that comfortable.

I also think road surface affect shoe comfort way more than people realise, and you might not notice how crappy the surfaces near you are until you walk them without sneakers. I can wear platform heels all day on an even, flat surface like a mall or dancing in a club but a lot of the pavements in my local area have unveven surfaces and are built perpendicular to a slope and it fucks my ankle up after ten minutes in even simple heels.
