I may catch some flack for this, but I really admire the Guzzardi twins. Yes, I do agree that sometimes their make-up is a bit too heavy for the characters they're cosplaying, but for series such as Borderlands or Legend of Zelda it works well. Their actual cosplay costumes are always really crafted well and detailed too.

If you're confident, I'd say go for the Oz Comic-Con Championships of Cosplay (or Cosplay Active for a little less stress).

The Supanova comps have lax pre-judging that consists on the judges walking around you and asking questions when you're in line about to go in. Not great.

I don't have any experience in the other comps, though, and would love to hear from other anons that do. Some are quite specific about their categories though (skit required, anime only etc) so keep that in mind.

The only comps I have experience in are Animaga and OZCC Cosplay Active, Animaga is definitely more relaxed "we like whoever has the prettier costume/whoever does the best Love Live dance" so not really a good place for armor builds imo (unless it's like... Tone Rion from VOCALOID), but Cosplay Active is a good open level comp for costumes that aren't just sparkly cute idol shit.

I took out Best Skit in Melbourne's CA this year with a transforming dress I made in three weeks, best group went to a couple of kids in splatoon costumes but thats prooobably only because the other groups they were up against were Shitty Taobao Love Live Pair #1, Shitty Taobao Love Live Pair #2, inaccurate and poorly made Aikatsu pair, and boring looking eveelution pair. I feel like if you and your partner went in with decently made armor sets you'd have a good chance of taking out a title.

Judging was done by Artemis who is skilled in textiles and Lumin who is skilled in armor, so I feel it was pretty fair that we were judged by people who are Actually into costuming, and it wasn't biased toward one medium or the other

Agreed. I hate it too. Most comps will judge on construction /and/ performance, so it feels like cheating. I guess if you're just going for something like Best Skit it's okay, but I'm still not a fan. But I watch competitions to see crastmanship skill, and I understand others might want different things out of comps, like great choreography, dance skills, or a great in-character performance. And for these people, having contestants make their own costumes might not be such a big deal.

I've been going to cons since 201...2, and even back then comps had the rule that "you have to have made your own costume, OR if you wear a bought one, you're only eligible for best skit" which back then, skits were more scripted fanservice plays. Fast forward 5 and a half years, the skit loophole still exists, and Love Live is wildly popular with easy to learn dances and costumes on the cheap.

Plus with LL fans being such attn whores wanting to become ~real net idols!~ ~the next A-muse!~ for their city (disclaimer I actually like A-muse since they're genuinely talented and make their costumes), they take the loophole and run with it as an excuse to be allowed to get up on a stage with an audience sitting there willing to watch them, why go outside to perform if you can't guarantee a large crowd ri~ght? For cons where bought can only get best skit it's kinda whatever at this point (since nobody does skits anymore, it's almost always only LL cosplayers in their taobao costumes dancing), But from how I've been comprehending Animagas comp rules, it's a points based system where anybody can take any title, it's a matter of who gets the most points, bought or made. I haven't been working nonstop on my costume for the past 10 days just to have a teetering chance of being beat by a bunch of teens who just want internet fame for 0 effort.

I've said it once I'll say it a billion times. Madfests community stage is the perfect thing to combat bought costumes being entered into competitons, they still get their stage and audience without having to take spaces from people who made their stuff. I'm not even kidding with that, Animagas Saturday competition had every slot filled last Tuesday, and there were only 10 spaces left for Sunday's competition as of then as well. these groups just want a stage to dance on and an audience to watch, they dont have any care about competing whatsoever.

Don't worry Anon I know, I mentioned in my recent post here that im a fan of A-Muse since they make their own costumes, and Aquaria makes theirs as well right? I don't think I feel as strongly about people in bought cosplays entering competitions, but I can understand where you're coming from, seeing as there's such a disparity in effort between the entrants who make their costumes and the ones who don't. If you've bought your costume, and you haven't choreographed your own skit, people aren't going to be as interested in your skillsets because it doesn't take a lot of talent to stand on a stage bearing someone else's hard work.

I wish the other Love Live dance cover groups would realise the whole reason Aquaria and A-muse are finding success is because their hard work isn't just limited to turning up to dance practices once a fortnight.

I've always found it weird too, and speaking for melbnova, it's the perfect place for a community stage. Not smack bang in the middle of any vendors, right by where madmans almost always parked every year so they can plug LL. It gives idol groups more time too, rather than a 3-5min time limit in comps and only doing one song, they can have a 15-30 minute time slot to do their stuff.

Wresting isn't scheduled to go on all day as well isn't it? Whereas they can get an endless stream of community performances each day with pre-applications.

I should add its not just good for idol performances too, there can be quick workshops for things like hand embroidery and wig styling, there can be scripted performances, you name it as long as an application is submitted to the con beforehand. I agree-- A-muse has top costumes and they're really high energy with their dancing, but they need to work on making their movements more precise and fitting to the tempo and mood of the song rather than just flailing their limbs out in the general direction they're meant to go. It seems that with a lot of odorites, especially outside of Japan, they either dont put enough energy into their movements or they put WAY too much.

Stupid rules? Animaga's skit time limit. I'm dancing (I know, I know) on Saturday in order to be eligible for as many points and categories as possible, group entrants get 5 minutes time limit, but solos only get 3?! It's really annoying because I had to cut more than half of my song out, its not too big of a deal but at /least/ have the decency to make ALL skit time limits the same.

Just because I dont have a bunch of other people on stage with me doesn't mean my choreography is magically shorter than it would be if I had a group.

Honestly it wasn't suuuper salty, lots of performance entries. Winners for groups were
- skit, Subaru and Hokuto from Ensemble Stars
- honourable mention, squid kids (the same ones who got best group from ozcc)
- 3rd, SQ. Idols Guilty Kiss from love live
- 2nd, Bill and Dipper from gravity falls
- 1st, Musoka Live and their dance that honestly made me think the stage was going to break with how much it was shaking

That was all the groups who entered in the first place iirc so it was pretty obvious Musoka was gonna win

as for solos
- skit, Mogyutto Honoka from LL
- 3rd, some person with a massive coffin thing idfk
- 2nd, Erza Scarlet with an amazing armour build, honestly she deserved first
- 1st, my salty tired ass that panicked and forgot my dance half way throughout. YAY!

I was always worried about being a loner when I first started going to cons, but it's surprisingly not too hard to make friends, especially if you're in cosplay too. Make an effort to chat to artist alley vendors too, but only if you're gonna buy something haha.

I'll be honest, it'll probably be an easier time making friends if you're a girl. But either way, just make an effort to compliment every cosplay you like. That's always the best way to start a conversation.

Yeah, you're allowed to as long as it's different characters. SQ entering again today is less to do with the con being desperate for entrants and more to do with that group of girls being desperate for attention. And I heard there were only 2 groups today? So they got prizes by default today since even though they came last in their category, they couldn't be any worse than 2nd.

They got prizes by default on Saturday as well, there's 4 group prizes, there was 5 groups, the only group that didn't get an award was the squid kids and that almost definitely has to do with them having taken out a title for the same thing at OzCC

oh my god, shut the fuck up. what people like you consider blackface is nothing what actual blackface is.

for something to be the "OMG EVIL WACIST" blackface, there must be intent to mock, degrade, or defile the subject material. original blackface presented this front and center by openly mocking black traits, such as painting the large red ring around their lips to simulate the lips of black people.

this is not blackface. there is no mocking of black features and there is no ill intent.

at most, this is a clumsy attempt at fitting more into the character, which while it may not have hit the mark, at least shows the cosplayer has respect for the source material.

should they have just not darkened their skin? probably, it would have at least prevented any unnecessary blackface discussion. but this is not a malicious action in the least bit, and people like you need to calm down.

My all time favorite among all her cosplays would be her Spider Gwen because she looks great in it and it suits her body so well. Second would be her Domino because she looks so badass in it. I'm sorry this happened to you anon, but this is a sad reality not only at cons but any crowded areas. If there were witnesses your best bet would be to report them to anyone with authority. Else you can confront them and tell them what they're doing is wrong and they should delete the photo. Not really much you can do so if you plan on cosplaying something that is even remotely risque, go with friends or hang out with a large group.
