The silhouette is unflattering, and the haori, tights and JSK are fighting for attention rather than complementing each other. All I like about it is the quality and colours of the JSK, hate the print and cut. This is nitpicky, but what's with the book bag? I did kitsuke classes for some time and everytime the teacher thought my combinations had too little contrast and wanted me to wear mustard and yellow obi and accessories. You learn to take a liking for it, eventually.

It is not required to be Asian to wear kimono. The Japanese are actually trying to encourage foreigners to wear kimono as it is a dying art they are desperate to keep alive. There have been some efforts to encourage high fashion designers to incorporate elements of the kimono into their designs to appeal to Westerns, and this is all encouraged by the Japanese cultural office (which I do not remember the official name).

imo, most of the outfits in here are cringe-tier regardless of being Asian, they take everything plus the kitchen sink and throw it all on some body with a huge fantasy wig, so the whole outfit screams "costume! look at me!" instead of "I'm stylin' and livin' my fine life"

If you want to try walolita and make it look nice, my suggestion is to treat it exactly like lolita. Pay attention to the colours, shapes and layering instead of focusing on "this is a kimono and needs an obi, haori, wooden flip flops and I need giant fabric flowers on my head so people can see how 'authentically japanese' I am from ten miles away".

Just focus on things like "this print is really pretty but the sleeves are huge, how do I balance it out and look elegant in it", don't get hung up worrying that you need platform shoes because okobo or you need a wig that looks more maiko-ish. If the outfit looks better in heels, go for heels. And try to avoid the fake-looking wigs, wa lolita may look outlandish, but using that as an excuse to go even further out just makes it look like a weeby fantasy costume instead of a dress you actually live in.

I think anons are being too harsh on the current state of Wa Lolita.
Metamorphose is doing a great job in creating a style that has the contrasting colors of kimono and Chinese palettes without looking like a costume. On the other hand, RPA is taking that influence and making the worst out of it.

To be fair, Was Lolita is finally getting attention from big brands and is growing into a very interesting direction. If you compare it to the old way Lolita, you can see the enormous improvement. Pic related is an old Bodyline was Lolita

Not Wa or Qi but still somewhat related. This hanbok lolita dress pisses me off. Hanbok consists of the skirt (chima) and a jeogori (the "shirt"). If they had made a small lolita bolero like a short sleeve jeogori style it would have gone so well with making the hanbok theme stick out better, and be better with lolita covering the shoulders. Don't call a short chima "hanbok lolita"

With cons, there's a lot of folks walking around in costumes anyway, most people will probably assume you're cosplaying if you look too outlandish. I recommend making up a character if you feel too embarassed to say you're wearing a fashion.

The bigger issue with cons is the space can sometimes be cramped, or crowded, or hot, or generally not conducive to OTT substyles. So if you're planning to have an active day and not just strut around in whatever area the cosplayers are using to hang out in, I'd definitely tone it down. One of my smaller local cons will actually measure your costume and you can't go into the AA if your costume is too big.

Without looking at your coord I don't know if tying your hair up plainly with a cord would look good. That said, random bits of cord tends to look like, well, random bits of cord. If you won't shell out for real kumihimo (I mean, no one here is gonna know if it's authentic kumihimo or not anyway), then at least opt for something like macrame or one of those fancy woven friendship bracelet-type cords and not something from the upholstery section of JoAnn's.

Also give some thought to balancing the coord, does your hair look good with the rest of the coord, or would it look better with a headbow? You can still add a kumihimo accent to the headbow any way. Like I said, think about it like a regular coord and balance things out, don't focus too hard on the "wa" kimono aspect of it.

I think the issue with most qi lolita is that they want to put too many design elements in and it becomes clusterfucky. Chinese vintage shops have made nice simple A-line JSKs, so I think indie brands want to try to make theirs unique in some way. It is, with the awareness that tastes for color coordination are historically different. Some colors that to western sensibilities "clash", have been okay in wearing kimono for centuries. That doesn't mean that you can throw whatever colors together because it takes a while to understand how that particular color system works, just that if it looks just fine for people used to kimono/traditional Japanese clothing, it will still always get wtf reactions from people who aren't. Can't speak for Qi, but again there you'll have color combinations based in the traditional Chinese sense for color.
