Was browsing Twitter and came across a crosspost to a Reddit post detailing the fact that apparently there are going to be a bunch of Christian 'god hates fags' types with signs outside of PAX? It didn't link to an original post or a group or anything, it was just a guy saying he wanted to get some Christians together to tell these super right-wing Christians basically to fuck off and that God is, in fact, okay with fags. Should be interesting to watch

I'd say it's when you're adding sex appeal to a character who has none innately. Like, if you want to be a tits out cosplayer like everyones favorite Nigri; sure go ahead. Cosplay Quiet, Powergirl etc etc ad infinitum of characters with assets on display.

But when you're adding lingerie to a character known for being literally the opposite; it's just soft core porn with a theme. See any number of MFC Girls getting paid for being half naked.

Please note, I have no issue with people shooting porn, but don't call it cosplay. You're making porn, own it and call it what it is. When half your insta/FB is just you in lingerie, you can say you're a model/doing porn etc. But don't claim you're just a cosplayer.

I'll stick by my previous point and say this: It's themed porn. Plenty of others are doing it, from the big names I'd say Verabambi is a great example. How many lewds and nudes get linked for her? Just own it. They're not cosplayers, they're low budget hustler or Zoo magazine for nerds

Madfest, being run by Madman, has industry contacts that SMASH doesn't, so there's a different sort of appeal if you're into panels with directors and voice actors (I saw the One-Punch Man panel with the anime director and Saitama's VA and thought it was really good, they even did a live dubbing of one of the scenes). Madfest is also relatively young and seems to still be looking into areas to grow into, so I think SMASH still wins in terms of scale and range. That said, I only have Madfest Melbourne from last year to compare to, so things could be different by now. Anyone got insight from Madfest in other states this year?

I'm a weebshit myself but the problem is that I'm in Sydney and Madfest and PAX are so close together in terms of time, every year it means I have to choose one or the other.
Unfortunately, there is no way in living hell I could ever convince any of my friends to choose MadFest over PAX. Gaming trumping animu aside, everyone and their mother knows that PAX is simply a level of con that MadFest can't (yet) compare to.

But if it's that good, I might go next year instead of PAX.

Gaming and anime cons being different things in my mind, it never occurred to me to compare them. But I see your point as an interstate con-goer. That said, have you considered going to a Madfest in another state, since those would be run at different times of the year? I have no idea if the scale would be the same across the board, but Madfest tickets are at least a fair bit cheaper than PAX, which I tend to only buy 1-day for (and maybe foyer-con the Sunday.)

Gamma was okay, I actually felt like it was better last year though? They had the gamers set up in the middle of the floor instead of a separate room like last year so it took up lots of space & felt like there weren't as many actual stalls to see & things to do because of it. Also they moved the AA up to the top levels which was a neat concept but the lighting was really dark so unless stallholders brought lights it was hard to see the merch, I felt really bad for them. Okay to all the nerds (too many to reply to) asking how to get a cosplayer gf, follow simple suggestions.

Compliment costume - bonus points if you recognise what its from, mention a character or scene you love and engage in a topic about their cosplay.

Follow basic social ques - if the girl is looking around, not making eye contact, talking to other people more or not prolonging the conversation, shes not the girl for you.

Ask about media related to the costume theyre doing. I'm cosplaying bioshock at PAX and love when people talk to me about bioshock, i could go on forever. Especially if they want to talk about Borderlands aswell.

Its not hard - go make friends, be nice, a simple smile goes a long way and wear deodorant (bonus points for hair washing)

The Australian threads are always shitty because the people who normally post on it don’t go to any other part of cgl, and just assume it’s a board to bitch about cosplayers when that’s not what it’s used for at all.

I mean.. don’t get me wrong, there’s a lot of bitching. But say, if someone was posted on the bad makeup thread and took it as an opportunity to take criticism on board and learn, people would actually be fairly encouraging to that person and wouldn’t post them again.

The difference here is that instead of criticising cosplayers/lolitas in any constructive way, people will just call you a slut or a bitch.

tldr; cgl can actually be a decent resource for honest feedback. It’s just that auscom sucks in particular.

This is my viewpoint too. CGL is an excellent resource for constructive criticism and new skills. I honestly feel bad for those who dismiss CGL so quickly because there are so many talented people to learn from here, I know I've learned a great deal which is why I keep coming back.

Unfortunately what's posted in the austhread is gossip about costhots and vendettas which you've got to be a fool to actually believe it's true. I know a few of us are trying to make this thread more wholesome, which I've seen a great improvement which is fantastic.

There sure is, it becomes very apparent when you've been lurking and occasionally posting in /cgl/ for almost 5 years. Gulls tend to hate when people namefag just because they want to, they have no need to identify who they are, like if you're posting in the WIP thread it's generally ok since you're probably answering questions other anons have asked you, but still most people don't do it there anyway just because namefags always come off as self-important and like they're some amazing holier-than-thou beings. Perth MadFest was a pile of steaming dogshit.

Ticket sales were poor thanks to the late announcement of the dates. People were scrambling to enter MNCC, so we've had the lowest number of entrants for our round, for the last umpteen years. The con itself had nothing to do actually do, let alone see. If you weren't there for the art displays, then there was absolutely nothing. Not only that, but they put themselves in a weekend in January, where it's 40 degrees outside, and decided putting the fan meets and performances out there was a good idea.

I'm still salty over this con, and how much it fucked up the year for those of us who were seriously considering entering MNCC and/or OzCCC

Plenty of people are self-conscious about some physical aspect of themselves. Cosplayers get their pics taken more than most normal people, and not every tog will shoot them in a way they find flattering, which can make these complexes more prominent. Can I just thank you guys? You're some of the only people here capable of criticising someone without also saying they're a terrible person.
I also agree, Kimmy and Inkk are lovely people. An absolute delight to talk to. And they do pose well and take photos well, they're really photogenic. But there's no real sense of accomplishment or improvement with them, because it's all bought or borrowed costumes. I think it would be really cool if they even just started making parts of the costumes, or modifying the bought ones to take them to the next level.

It's like if you were selling prints with the profits going to charity, you sold 1000 prints and they cost $0.60 to produce each... thats $600 which I'm pretty sure nobody would want to pay out of pocket. Production costs aren't free, which is why they say "all profits will be going to charity" rather than "all PROCEEDS will be going to charity". I'm sure if A-Muse were an international brand they could afford to donate all proceeds to charity, but as it is they're just a bunch of young adults with a relatively small fanbase when you think about it.

If they were pocketing half of the profits and giving the other half to charity, then That wouldn't be generous and selfless. If they wanted to they could honestly probably have added labour costs into what'd be taken from the proceeds, but they're not, just the materials (which, considering I know that they tend to order them in from taobao, isn't really a lot of $ and the reason why they were able to start the auctions at $30)

Is it just me or was Madfest just really... dead today?

I was there last year and I can tell you the outdoor area on the steps was absolutely jumping with thousands of people getting their photos taken and having fun. I was there at midday today and there was 50 people at best. The isles in the convention center itself looked empty and there just didn't really seem like there was that much to do

They shot themselves in the foot with not actually telling anyone it was happening. Sure, they made an announcement for it at BrisNova last year, but how many Perth/WA people actually make the trip out every year and watch the cosplay competitions?
It's also why the WA round for MNCC was so poor. Teams were only given four weeks or something to get everything ready, not including the two weeks of Christmas/New Years.

OzCC is rumoured to be about ticket sales though, so that's really disappointing. :(

I sure was lmao my complaints with taobao cosers like the other anon said, is only the ones who either enter them into comps, or the super popular cosers who always always ALWAYS wear stuff from taobao. Before this year I was like that but after the whole soramaru incident last year, realising I wasn't having any fun just wearing taobao LL cos after taobao LL cos, I decided to finally dedicate myself to making as many of my costumes as possible. Starting next year I'm trying to limit myself to one bought costume per year! (I've only bought 2 this year.) And enter as many craftmanship comps as possible, definitely trying for Melbs OzCC championships.

Also since obviously not everybody is in my personal circle, I feel like it's worth mentioning that one of my planned costumes for Madfest was entirely handmade, I just didn't finish it in time, had a bit of a breakdown on Saturday morning and skipped the con, then wore my Saturday costume on Sunday. Nothing wrong with admitting defeat and wearing something easy rather than pushing yourself to your absolute limit to finish a costume.

Honestly I've just been on /cgl/ for many many years and if there's anything I hate, its when people sperg out replying whenever they've been posted about. Nothing but second-hand embarrassment. I'd much rather talk like an actual regular human being on here, instead of acting like an absolute dick and having that associated with me from there on out.

Plus /cgl/ is a really good source for concrit (outside of the aus thread, at least) if you actually stop and listen to what everybody's saying.
