They literally bought items from indie designers and copied their patterns. How is that not stealing? From a legal standpoint, sure, they're fine, but it's fucking rude to work in the same vendor's hall as someone, to be a sponsor at that event, and then copy someone else's patterns and sell them for profit with no credit given.

They have been really behind on vendors this year. Which vendor are you interested in? I can probably tell you if they are going or not

Legally, no, but if you don't think that what they did was tacky then I'm assuming your IQ points can be counted on one hand.

I agree that there were a couple folks who probably exaggerated what happened but if anything, this really demonstrated how out of touch Simplicity was with the audience they were trying to connect with. I certainly don't believe they were doing it with malicious intent, but I think it says a lot about their understanding of the community when they didn't think about the fact that they were purchasing items from small businesses and independent designers to frankenstein into commercial patterns. It was a very silly and ignorant move, regardless of legality.

Right, but that's the point. This isn't normalfag fashion. People's standards are way different, and so are the (sub)cultural norms of any alternative fashion or niche hobby. Like I said, even if it wasn't malicious it demonstrates how out of touch they were/are.

I decided to splurge and got a deluxe membership this year!

I thought I knew what I wanted to wear but now I'm unsure. I'm planning on wearing Fortune Tarot from meta for the tea party.

I was thinking about doing meta all weekend which I think I still want to do, but I think the blouse I wanted to wear with one of my coords got lost in the mail ;_; I have other things I can wear with it but I'm a bit bummed. Oh well. Either way the next thing I planned to wear was Dozing Cat. I wanted to wear Night Carnival as well but I'm not sure anymore. Thinking about Wonder Carousel as backup.

Anyone else wearing meta all weekend? They're one of my fave brands so I'm super excited for them to be a guest this year!

Its amazing that people still dont get how it works after it being talked about so much.

The pattern was made by a 3rd party and sold to simplicity. At best the only thing simplicity is guilty of is not checking the source of the idea (as if that's a thing that can actually be done).
The people working the simplicity booth don't always work for the company, so even if someone from simplicity purchased stuff from the booths (two of the people complaing later went back and admitted that they couldnt be 100% sure that someone from the booth did purchase from them) its gonna be hard as all hell to prove that they used it to reverse engineer a pattern.
Two of the "copied" patterns have also been published in previous OnS editions as well so they aren't anything that isnt instructions for out there already.

All of the standard people from last year are going to be there again this year, minus Lolita Collective, and there's a few new people + people who vended with LC coming by themselves.

nayrt but I mean, they do offer a badge for the following year if you contribute 3 or more panels. That's why I made sure to have three panels this year. But, that being said, since I've heard some rumors about this being the last year...

>minus Lolita Collective,

It's been known since last year that Lolita Collective wasn't returning; I don't think it was widely publicized but I remember it was discussed in last year's thread. I'm bummed too. Seems like it's possibly due to the cost of space not being worth it.

Also yikes I hope those are just rumors and not true! Rufflecon isn't perfect but as an attendee at least, I really enjoy it. I mean even if it became just a one day event it might be nice still. There's not many larger events on the east coast (especially northeast) that cater to lolitas like this.

Anyway, the schedule is out now! Any panels you're excited about? Scheduling conflicts?

Holding my breath for you to go ahead and step up to the plate anon. For that matter, do you think ruffle cons existence prevented other groups from trying this? Nope. So that puts paid to the idea that there are "Competent groups" out there willing to make a better one.

There's a /cgl panel which..... I can't see going well. Thoughts?

Hi! I'm the panelist doing the /cgl panel. I just want to say that what I'm attempting to do with this panel is to explain to newbies that CGL isn't the big, horrible place that a lot of people make it out to be. Basically the whole panel is demonstrating the usefulness of /cgl, and showing different types of threads that are genuinely helpful to lolitas.

Of course I understand it's not going to be something everyone will enjoy, and I was a little hesitant to run the panel in the first place, but I do honestly believe that /cgl has a worse reputation than it deserves at times, and that most lolitas could benefit from using it.

Thank you! I've also benefitted from it a lot over the years. I realize that its reputation has definitely become less bad over the years, but I still think a lot of people avoid it due to past drama or straight up fear.

One thing I worry slightly about is that if the panel is well-attended by people who aren't already using cgl, it might bring a lot more newbies and the bothersome questions and comments that come with them. But I don't really picture this panel being very well-attended, especially by people who aren't already on /cgl, so I'm not too worried.

There isn’t anything preventing anyone from making another Lolita specific con though. It just takes a ton of work, money, several people with good organizational skills, and people who will commit and having enough staff so as not to be overtaxed. And if anything, Rufflecon needs a staff person with better organizational skills and the ability to make executive decisions in a timely manner. I think it can be salvaged but like I said that’s really what they need. That and a better hotel.

>> No.9692460

1/2

So here's a rundown on the premium/deluxe member swag. Keep in mind this is coming from a deluxe member with two premium member friends, and who went to the feedback panel:

The premium gift bags were set up "lucky bag style", according to the staff on Thursday night, so basically some premium members got 2 tickets to get things from the marketplace, some got 3, some got 1 (but that was a mistake that was corrected. There should have been 2 or 3 per bag.) Every premium member got the same pair of socks, and some people got two of the same pair (because "lucky bag style"). HOWEVER nobody was told it would be "lucky bag style", so a lot of people were pissed because some people got much more value than others.

Deluxe bags were almost completely worthless. The bag material itself was very cheap in comparison to last years (imagine one of those reusable grocery store bags.) There were fliers for Wunderwelt, Atelier Sucré and a few other brands, and a sticker sheet. We had coupons to get things from Miss Danger and MossBadger (more on this in a second). We also had a tiny perfume sample which I immediately gave away. Finally, there was a 10% off Arda coupon. But that's it.

Consider last year's bag, where we received: two rolls of lace, two brooches, a pair of wristcuffs, a perfume sample, a mug, and three tea samples, plus some postcards.

I have photos of both of the swag from this year and last year, if anyone is interested in seeing the comparison.

Note: The lapel pins weren't in the swag bags on Thursday night. When we complained, we were originally told that there weren't any lapel pins. We immediately said that we were promised them (because we were.) Eventually they found them and we were given the pins.

>> No.9692463

>>9692460
From the feedback panel, it turns out that someone had accidentally thrown all of the pins out on Thursday night, and the staff had to literally go dumpster diving in order to retrieve the box (the pins were in bags, in a big bag, in a box, so they weren't contaminated or anything.)

Also, though, the pins were SO cheap compared to last year. Last year we had large enamel pins. This year they were tiny and plastic, and mine broke within the first 5 minutes of wearing it.

When we presented the coupon to Moss Badger, we were given a pendant. Miss Danger gave us a postcard. That obviously pissed people off because we already had so many postcards, and last year, when we gave our coupons to the vendors, they gave us actual items.

Then, we are given MORE things at the tea party. Last year, we recieved a second tote bag (Vierge Vampur), a Putumayo keychain, Putumayo sticker, a two-way hair pin from Pastel Parade, a compact mirror from Vierge Vampur, Triple Fortune pin and handkerchief. We also had postcards.

This year at the tea, we were given more postcards and a brooch from Meta.

So, the stark difference between the value of last year's swag versus this year was obviously very upsetting to many people.

From the feedback panel, we learned a lot about why this happened and how they intend to fix it. I don't know if anyone is interested in the "why", but if you are, let me know and I'll type it up.

I will say that around 75% of the problems come because they were extremely short on staff this year. They NEED more people to volunteer as staff, plain and simple. I've already recruited a few people to volunteer for next year.

If anyone has more questions or wants to know if things were talked about in the feedback panel, let me know. It might take me a little bit to get back to you because I am basically a corpse today, but I'll check periodically.

Yeah, I was someone who bought deluxe after I saw what my friend who was premium got in her bag last year and other deluxe friends' swag. Like aside from the early seating and early access to consignment + marketplace I definitely wanted in on the swag and was a little disappointed/confused when I opened my deluxe bag, because I also felt immediately that there were things missing that were promised on the website under the membership tiers. A friend of mine who was deluxe got her badge Friday morning instead of Thursday night like me and another friend and she did get her lapel pin, but I remember in the hotel room she held it up and we saw that it had already snapped in half after one day.

I know they had a lack of funding this year so I get why that's the bags were a little light this year but some of this was just kinda ridic. They only sold 5 premimums last year and this year it was initially like that too but it seems like they opened it up to 5 more for some reason (rumor I heard is to grab extra cash after they got rid of Simplicity) and because vendors were only contracted for 5 items, plus probably due to funding issues, people's bags became lucky packs. For $450 I'd be pretty damn annoyed too.

As for Miss Danger only giving out postcards, I saw another deluxe friend actually have a brooch from her as her gift for the coupons/tickets people got that were told to present them for gifts. What I heard what happened was MD had a miscommunication: the brooches were supposed to be for premium members only, and they didn't know deluxe also got the gift tickets. So people started handing them the coupon to get their free gift, and they gave them to deluxe members when they should've been for premium, then ran out. I also heard there was supposed to be postcards for premium as well but they got lost in the mail or something when trying to ship them from Russia to the USA? That said I did have a nice time but yeah, there was a ridiculous amount of communication issues among staff it seems. Personally I would say half the problems were staffing issues, and the other half was absolutely an issue of funding due to the loss of Simplicity as a sponsor.

Wunderwelt bought out Moitie which leads to me believe they have a decent amount of money; I wonder if they would consider becoming a major sponsor for the event? I think someone told me they were a sponsor at some level but it doesn't seem to me like they were a major one.

I gladly post the pictures! It'll take me a little bit to compile them though, but I will try to get them to you all asap.

>>9692499
Well, you do get free admission. So you're saving yourself $80 at least. But that may be something you can take up with staff.
Plus, for example, the people who I've recruited to volunteer are my non-lolita partner and family. They all appreciate lolita but aren't interested in going to panels, for example, so the at-con time-requirement isn't a problem for them. I know a lot of people who could easily bring their partner along, if it works for them in their situation. It's also a case of "do I want this con to have the best chance of continuing?" I understand how hard staffing is, especially if you're someone who models or does panels or vends. But there are many, many attendees who don't have those requirements who would qualify to staff.

>>9692501
I think the quality of the bags is probably the ONE thing that isn't necessarily related to the staffing issue. But, actually, in a way, it is - because so much staff was lost (not just enforcers or registration people, but organizers as well) that people who normally were in charge of just one or two things (like coordinating the Japanese guests, or in this case, coordinating the swag bag prizes) had to take over more duties that 1. they weren't familiar with running and 2. possibly weren't qualified for. Some of these staffing changes happened months ago, but some of them happened just weeks before the con. So basically people had a lot of work piled onto them and were stretched too thin.

I would also like to take this chance to say that a couple of the events that people were sad to see go, particularly the game room and karaoke, were actually panels that nobody signed up for this year. So these things weren't run by Rufflecon itself in previous years, someone would submit it as a recurring panel (as a panelist, I'm not quite sure how that would work) and this year nobody signed up for it. However I will say I think that could have been fixed if Rufflecon made a social media post once panel applications closed and expressed that nobody signed up to run them, so someone could have volunteered to do it. I know that one person in the feedback panel said that she would run karaoke next year, but of course it's a little early to decide that with 100% certainty.

>>9692538
Wunderwelt was a sponsor, but from an outside standpoint it seemed that they were a sponsor in name only, excepting the fliers the deluxe and premium members were given. I do wonder if they funded the event at all, or if that was something that could be made to happen.

With that being said however, getting Japanese guests and sponsors takes literal years to get into place (getting meta took three years, according to the feedback panel) because they only have two translators. That's another thing they really need qualified volunteers for.

And yes, what you said about Miss Danger is 100% true - the one Deluxe member who got a MD pin wasn't supposed to, and actually one of the premium members (who the pin was supposed to be for) missed out on it because of that.

It wasn't just a communication issue - one thing that has happened in years past and been fine became a big issue this year. Basically, the sponsors / vendors who donate to the swag bags are comissioned for X amount of items, at Y total value. The problem is that you may end up with 10 items worth a total of, say, $200 (so $20 per item), and then 150 more items valued at a total of $100. The feedback panel agreed at our suggestion that they should proposition X number of items at Y value PER ITEM so this doesn't happen again.

Another problem was the shipping - because of the loss of staff, the person who is normally in charge of double-checking that the sponsors had sent out their items on time didn't get a chance to do so because she had so many other responsibilities thrusted onto her last-minute.

Another thing to mention is that there was talk of possibly compensating the deluxe and premium members something post-con, which was brought up by someone in the feedback panel, but of course no official decisions could be made without consulting the chairwoman and the rest of the team. I personally don't want any compensation, even though I am disappointed. I would rather they keep the money and use that to make next year's con better.

Agreed. And I'm definitely willing to give deluxe another shot next year as well. This is all a huge example of how funding makes or breaks a con. It's unfortunate what happened with Simplicity and I am definitely trying to brainstorm ideas myself for additional sponsors to maybe suggest in the post-con feedback form they send.

It all sucks because I love this con and don't want to see it fold ;_; there's no events like this for lolitas in the northeast and it's also nice to have an event focused on us specifically (as opposed to sharing the stage at an anime con).

I was wondering that too, because usually they would announce or have a note on the schedule saying who sponsored what event and I didn't recall seeing their name anywhere.

Also seeing the translators and some of the other attendees who spoke japanese made me wish I could too. I think I am going to try to start studying the language because I'd love to be able to speak with guests like that and although I'm not interested in a regular volunteer position I think I'd probably volunteer to be a translator/interpreter if I become adept enough.

I'm one of the guests who speaks Japanese as well, and I REALLY wish I could volunteer as translator. I was actually asked to by an event organizer at a meet earlier this year, but I was honest with her and said that I don't think I'm good enough. Even though I understood about 80% of what was being said by Natsumi-san and Matsuoka-san at the history of the brand panel, that's not enough. I would need to be able to understand 100% in order to volunteer. I'm going to try to study harder this year and hopefully get better, because I think translating is one of the only things I'd be able to volunteer as...

No, what I mean is more that there were a lot of technical words that I didn't know, that the volunteer translator did. Of course she asked questions as well, but I would have had to ask around 30+ questions, whereas she asked around 5. I definitely need to study more before I'd be comfortable translating (I also have anxiety, and me feeling that inadequate at my "job" would not be good for anyone)

I'm curious: how much did you spend on this con, not including your outfits?
I'm looking at $900, and I feel like I spent a lot less than some others over the weekend. My travel expenses were higher than my friends' from new york tho.
My trip to Japan last year only set me back $3k, and I splashed some cash then. Reviewing my finances for the weekend this morning made me question whether I felt it was worth it. I would like to go to Rufflecon at least once more. Hopefully we will be able to learn from the mistakes of this year, adequately prepare some back up plans, and drum up enough support, determination, and interest to pull off a great event. I haven't volunteered in the past but plan to next year.
If it's like this or worse, though, I likely won't go again.

I understand not feeling good enough to translate for a panel but maybe good enough to help with hosting the guests? They were talking at the feedback panel about having to have people to fetch them from the airport and make sure they’re taken care of and helping run their booths and maybe you know enough Japanese to help with those kinds of things.

Do you think it's worth it? For me the consignment is cool, but I curate my purchases quite a bit. I've spent a lot of time in brand and second-hand shops, too, so it's not that novel of an experience.
Maybe I'm just falling out of love with these sort of events, or jaded by going to some really good ones, but I feel like I have more fun traveling to places than spending that money on cons and whatnot.
I do enjoy the industry aspect, but that's why I'd like to find work there, either as a small business or an employee. I still don't feel like these events have helped me in that respect, though, which is part of why I want to volunteer.

Nayrt, but which girl in the IW bolero are you referring to? If you're thinking of a girl wearing a green floral jsk and red IW bolero on Saturday, that was me. I ended up helping out a little at Triple Fortune and the other kanzashi booth next to it. I was also thinking I'd like to be a translator next year, but I'm in the same boat as the other anon where I feel my Japanese isn't good enough. I'm fine with conversational interpretation, but some of the technical terms Natsumi used I didn't understand in her explanation so I'll need to study more.
What is it like to volunteer/translate at rufflecon, for those in this thread who did? I'd like to do it but I'd want more info first.

For me, yes. A lot of my friends go and while CT is only the next state over from me, I always personally have a lot of fun hangout with my friends and comm members in this type of setting as well as meeting new people - the small convention setting makes it really easy for me to just strike up conversations with people.

It's also worth it for me personally to be able to see certain items in person or be able to buy things in person that may be harder to find online. In the consignment room I found 2 meta sailor pieces that don't always come up for sale online for really great prices. For pieces I didn't buy, it was still nice to see them in person, feel the fabric, etc. or even try certain things on. In the marketplace, I also purchased brand items that are either currently sold out online or hard to get a hold of, and purchased items from sellers who don't always update online or don't sell online at all (last year I finally got my hands on a Moss Marchen necklace - she doesn't sell online and they're hard to find secondhand). I've never been to Japan nor have I had a chance to visit the brand shops that are in the USA, so I suppose for myself, the experience is still kinda fun. Like, Sunday morning I remember I rushed down to the marketplace for the Meta fashion show pieces. I bought a dress/headbow set for $160 that would've been $300 had I bought them new from the website.

I suppose it just depends on what you personally are trying to get out of it. For me, I think it was definitely worth the money, minus the deluxe member blunders. I would absolutely love to travel to Japan or to one of the nice European events but for where I'm at right now the con is something I enjoy a lot.

Here's the deluxe swag from 2016. Starting at the top left corner and going from left to right, we have:

Belladonna wristcuffs, Mossbadger brooch, wooden brooch, Phoenix alchemy lab perfume sample, RC tote bag, Tea & Absinthe tea samples (we actually got three more of these at the tea party, so 6 total), Pastel Parade 2-way clip, 3 rolls of Simplicity lace, Vierge Vampur compact mirror, Putumayo x Show By Rock keychain, Morun x Muuna Stoik tote bag (which I initially misremembered as Vierge Vampur, sorry!), fluffy bat thing which nodody knew the source or use of, Putumayo sticker, Triple Fortune handkerchief and pin, Tea & Absinthe Mug (it wasn't this exact design, but same size), Vierge Vampur postcard, Morun x Muuna Stoik postcard, and Pastel Parade Postcard.

Yeah, that's who I'm referring to, haha. I was just wondering because I stopped by the kinzashi booth to buy a second hair clip after the owner/designer's panel and she was trying to tell me to pick out a gift but I didn't understand and I remember she had grabbed you to help interpret. I just wanted to give you a shoutout and say thank you for helping out hahaha I had kinda guessed she was trying to tell me to take something for free with my purchase, but I didn't want to just assume. I was getting ready to pull out my phone and bring up google translate when you had appeared!

To the both of you, I definitely think it may be worth trying to contact them and ask about what the job entails. Like another anon said, there may be other roles as an interpreter that you could still partake in somehow.

2017 Deluxe "swag"

(Note: I'm not completely unpacked yet, so I may have missed something. If I did, please feel free to chime in.)

Rufflecon 2017 tote bag, Printed ribbon, Princess Henna business card, Rufflecon sticker (which we got last year too, I believe) Wunderwelt flier, Miss Danger postcard, Arda Wigs business card, I Do Declare postcard, Voodoo Dolly(?) Sticker sheet, Arda Wigs postcard / coupon, Atelier Sucré postcard, American Duchess postcard (which actually has a coupon on the back that I didn't originally see), postcard for a brand I'm unsure of, poorly-photoshopped-in Mossbadger pendant (they all had different designs), and Meta brooch & postcard.

The difference in value is really stark. This year it was mostly all advertisements and coupons, which is kind of depressing.

Aww thanks for thanking me, that's really sweet. This was my first rufflecon and I had a wonderful time. Hopefully by next year I'll be better at Japanese and will be able to formally volunteer.
One thing I thought that was kinda odd was that the Japanese designers' booths didn't have interpreters with them to help out. I was talking with Kaie and Babi on Saturday and they were saying that they had interpreters Friday, but not Saturday, and that it was really difficult and tiring to run the booth with their limited English. Did rufflecon just not have enough interpreters to help with that?

nayrt but the $400 premium tickets weren't still available because the bags were shitty. Last year's deluxe and premium were amazing. This year, premium (the $400 membership) sold out the fastest (as they do every year) and to my understanding (this is not confirmed by any means), the number sold is usually 5. It was 5 again this year, but it seems like they randomly released 5 more premium tickets in an effort to make more money for the financial loss of losing Simplicity. (And thus some were still available because not everyone knew there were more)

You're welcome! I hope that's something you are able to do too!

I found that weird too; I think I heard from someone (either here or somewhere else) that there was an interpreter who quit. Not sure if that meant there was originally 3 and they were down to 2? Or if one of the two people they had for the weekend was picked up and that's it because they couldn't find any. I know when I first got to the kinzashi booth, the lady actually used Google translate on her phone to thank me for buying something the previous day, and I was thinking about why they didn't have interpreters that just stuck with the guests the whole weekend. I believe there were only two interpreters, and they may have been stretched thin trying to translate stuff at the booths, panels, and fashion shows. I felt bad for the Japanese guests and even the interpreters.

>> No.9692731

On a different note, because I feel like bitching about it here: I was at the Meta Q&A panel and things were going well, then an ita walked in. She came in when there was like 15 minutes left to go. She had on this awful frizzy pink cosplay wig, was wearing some stretched out taobao or bodyline JSK that didn't quite fit her in a flattering way at all, with stretched out socks and flats and some fugly stuffed animal purse. She got to ask the last question and fucking asked "Does Metamorphose have plans to make more affordable items for people such as high school students?"

I wanted to slap her DESU. The whole room had this collective silent groan + I heard some whispers around the room as soon as she asked that. Natsumi and Matsuoka gave her a pretty good, reasonable answer though, saying that it can be hard because the cheaper you try to make an item, the more details you have to remove, and the less cute it gets, and it loses what makes the item Metamorphose.

So basically, if you don't want to look fuckin fugly, don't be a cheap ass ita bitch.
