I wasn't so much denied as they stopped responding when I asked about photo rights and the like.

They didn't stop me going in, but I've heard of at least one person being denied entry and a couple of people running around with lightstands etc and no media pass

Honestly what I'm getting from the feedback is is that if you follow the rules, you're denied your inquiry, but bugger all the rules, do what you want:

Fuck those fucking queue jumpers. There were some because of poor layout and bad crowd control but there was one in particular for Jessica's Saturday morning session where he knew exactly what he was doing. Some guy talking loudly to FakeNerdBoy while Jessica was taking some early selfies with the first in line. This asshole then gets photos and signatures after turning up at 11 while the rest of the queue must have been waiting at least half an hour. I didn't notice anyone complaining about it but I was too far away from the staff to do anything about it.

That firestar_200 / Crystal person holy fuck she's a leech, All I've seen from her is her wearing her friends cosplay and trashing them and acting relevant in the cosplay community.

I turn down every party invite I've gotten from her
She throws some really sub par parties during wellington Armageddon.

I had a friend go to her most recent party and these were his words, "I went and I hated it, She consistently talked about her stream which only nets 20 viewers while my friends give her advice she doesn't listen, She's plain old fucking silly I wish she knew that her stream's not that good. Her donations should all be charged back"

That being said I heard she's cheated on her boyfriend multiple times and She's sent nudes to a bunch of people.

Dropping more about more people soon, Just need to finish work.

He basically runs around making fun of cosplay, takes the piss, acts like a general cunt to people who don't stand up for themselves or can't tell him to fuck off and stop acting like their friend. I've found it's been most effective to literally turn around and walk off when he's mid sentence. He hasn't talked to me or approached me in a year or so but I still hear stories of him being a right twat to other cosplayers.

It would be nice to bar him from events but I'm sure his girlfriend would have something to say about it.

Actually, now that I mention it - I was in one of the cosplay panels on Monday before Jessica Nigri's panel and someone wouldn't shut the fuck up at the back. It was a Mei cosplayer and she was clearly just hanging out for Jessica's panel. 90% sure it was the girlfriend. So bloody disrespectful.

Yes. Yes you could hear her. Even from halfway up the room. You couldn't hear much from the girl she was talking to but to come into a panel, pay no attention, and talk over the panelists is the very definition of disrespectful.

I've never had a problem with her either but just that one act pushed her away to someone I'd never want to associate with.

Also that panel was really interesting and very helpful!

That said, does anyone have and advice for entering comp with a purely sewn costume? Cause idk about you guys but it kinda seems to me like there's a bit of armour bias in the judging? Or am I just overthinking it being a sewer myself?

Hmm they are supposed to judge on an overall basis, so I think a mixture of sewing and armour (bonus for props) should get a good outcome.

The prizes are usually not that great so I think it's better to enter just so you can challenge yourself.

Personally I find it hard not to take people at face value. Most cosplayers in the comm seem to be pretty nice and passionate. I'll admit there can be large differences in senses of humour and that's where I find some tension to arise. People getting offended (sometimes rightly so) then just not forgiving.

It's easy to fall into the trap of "my friend doesn't like you so I don't". I try to be aware of this in myself. On the other hand if you know one of your friends has been treated poorly by someone in the comm it's really hard to let it go. Much easier to look after your friends and be seen to have "taken a side".

it's nowhere near as underground as everyone thinks it is, the sides are pretty clearly defined if you close enough to the comm.

that said, it's neither as big a thing as it often gets played out to be on here, it's simply one group that doesn't like another, there's no need for a bigger explanation to that.

the ladder exists in this comm, always has, more than likely always will, that's where 90% of the drama comes from, the rest stems from a few people being way to touchy about small things.

The only times I get worried are when people start getting physical threats or harassed in messages. The rest, as you say, is pretty minor. And of course there's just the general dislike that I see in the comm of cosplayers who act really lovely to "higher tier" cosplayers just to try and up themselves in the community. I've heard stories but never seen it for myself so again, does it even exist? Who knows! Our comm is too small for people to try and become the most popular God tier cosplayers anyway.

Alright I've been looking at this thread and lurking but haven't been bothered updating it in a few days

The trip that I do annually up to Auckland for Armageddon I was anticipating hype and the usual amazing time, but this year I got the amazing opportunity to go to Korea with Jeremy T Smith. Thanks for the tip there, photography styles vary person to person, there are some amazing photographers out there. By no means do i profess to be one of those people. Cyren has amazing talents and doesn't have the same sort of gear that I do and I admire that. My mention of it's value was to illustrate the immense amount of time I've invested in what I do. You don't have to be mathematically gifted to realise that $15k isn't something you can just get overnight or ask your parents for (unless you're rich...) Does it give me power over people or skills? No, that would be silly. Does it give me the right to decide who and what I want to take photos of? Hell yes. It's my investment of time spent at work to get the money to pay for something that I don't expect a return from, my investment in time to learn to use it, resources to attend events and so on, the list goes on. I don't *expect* anyone to like my work and I don't *expect* anyone to give me special treatment for what I own. I DO expect that people respect that I'm able to make my own choices on who to take a photo of. Like I said before if you don't like what I do or how I operate then I invite you to make the investment and buy a camera, learn to use it, buy editing software and learn to use it and be the change you want to see in the photography community.

At events, unless I'm contracted, my mission statement is, and always has been, that I'm there to document and showcase as many of the best cosplays as possible as well as anyone who would like their photo taken. Images from events are only lighting fixed and sometimes some white balance if it's really that bad. I simply don't have the time to spend 30 to 60 minutes on each of the 40-80 images I get per day of event. Most event photos are shot at sub-optimal settings due to the abysmal lighting in the event so yes, I will use 800-1200 ISO, Direct TTL or Manual flash with AWB to maximise the amount of kept shots. No one should expect shoot quality from a convention hall.

I feel it's worth mentioning though that this is not the case however for photo shoots as all images are taken between 50-200 ISO with controlled manual settings and 1-4 off angle diffused flash guns. These images make the vast majority of the images I post on my Monday/Thursday posts.

And even less people should point their flashes straight at a cosplayer. There are a very small handful of high end fashion photographers who can pull this look of, neither you or I are one of them.

You don't always have to bring your own light, Welly might be a shitty cold ass venue but it's got plenty of window light you can use. When you do have to, or just want to, bring a flash you don't always have to shoot bare, you can bounce it of a wall or ceiling for a much softer light. Auckland has a handful of spots for window light and several good bounce spots too.

Quality over quantity. You'll see yourself improve a lot faster that way.

No one gives a shit outside of you if your shooting at iso 100 or iso 10k, and no one can tell once it's posted and compressed by facebook.

I totally agree with this, the people who get named on this thread but don’t even respond (in which I believe they have seen or have been told about it) are the bigger people and don’t seem to be spreading these “stories”, whereas people who do get named and are responding within the hour are generally the so called “victims” and just getting all there shitty friends to reply anonymously about how great these people are..
So summing up if you get brought up in this thread and you have someone telling everyone here how great you are, you are a cunt and need to go bungy off a bridge with the rope around your neck
