There's been a lot of good stuff said already, but I'm going to add something that bothers me:

When you can clearly tell that an otherwise skilled person has half assed parts of the costume. It's just so much wasted potential when some of the pieces are so nice and then for the rest they've skimped on either materials or time.

As an example, a girl I know is a decent cosplayer. She knows how to sew, make armor and props, and she's really good with make-up. As a bonus she is also decently cute in both face and body. She could, imo, be winning master level (journeyman *definitely*) contests...but she just doesn't. She's very fast/prolific in making outfits but this is because she cuts corners absolutely everywhere. At first glance/in a thumbnail her cosplays look impressive, but when you look closer she doesn't finish her details properly. Paint will be splotchy in places, the perfectly formed armor just needed another layer of priming and sanding, her bias tape never has mitered corners and will randomly get puckered and shifted, the works. It's not usually all those things at once, but just a little at a time, but holy fuck, if she actually took her time instead of rushing, everything would look fucking amazing.

There's not much to say to her though, because she's enjoying what she's doing so it's like, you do you, if you're happy with where you're at I guess.

Anyway. A lot of that stuff I'm willing to forgive in a cosplay anyway, especially if it's kids or beginners and they're just really happy about wearing a costume out. Happy cosplayers warm my heart more than anything, although it always gives me a weird vibe when people claim to be super passionate/artists/artisans and they're just happy buying stuff or producing crappy work. I just can't empathize cause I wouldn't be satisfied with not living up to my full potential, or learning new things and working to improve.

While I do 110% agree on this one, and think it can utterly kill even the best made costume, I could see velvet working on a Sailor Scout, honestly. They're pretty highly stylised outfits, a fair way removed from proper sailor-style uniforms, and the sheen would give it a slightly 'magical' vibe, if you like.
I'd go more for military-style cosplays done in flimsy, cheap, poly/cotton plainweave, so it looks like they're wearing pyjamas.

OP here, I think eBay Amazon and aliexpress are pretty equal, since the wigs they sell most likely are from the same factories anyways, but aliexpress tend to be cheaper for the same product, plus I think the review system is better, hence why I recommend aliexpress over eBay and Amazon

If you want to be 100% sure you're getting a good wig though, buying from a store that sells wigs and has a good reputation like arda (NOT taobao resellers like spreepicky, you're wasting your money) is your safest option

I've had the same thought. Men do not gather fat in the places women do. So when a woman is really overweight they super do not look anything like the character they are going for.
It's this off dichotomy seeing a fairly fit character cosplayed by someone 80lbs bigger than their frame really should be. Like you could get away if you had an extra 20lbs on ya. Some strategic padding and tailoring can conceal it. But 80 just looks bad.

Agreed, for 'realistic' cosplay of more grounded, 'realistic' characters/properties the vast majority of wigs instantly make the end result look fake. If you were translating this character for a film would they be wearing a cosplay wig? In many cases no, they'd be cutting, coloring and styling the hair or augmenting it with hair pieces (using the real hair as a base) or using realistic wigs.

When people don't change their eyebrow color to match their wig. I think it's ugly as fuck when people have a pink, blue, purple, etc. wig and then brown eyebrows.
I'm not saying that people have to fully cover and then redraw their eyebrows. But drawing over your natural eyebrows with eyeshadow or a thin eyeliner pencil takes 2 minutes and is super easy.

I also hate when guys have a scraggly little pube-stache that they refuse to shave off for cosplay
