Nah, I feel like the early 2000’s was the tail end of ‘old school’ and the embryonic stages of ‘modern’ lolita. 2006 is just around when I first found out about lolita and I remember there being kind of a mishmash of the old school vibe and the beginnings of the “print” era where there was way less focus on the lace and more on what was printed on the fabric, of that makes sense.

Not necessarily, 2006 had plenty of beautiful and iconic designs. The release year matters to some extent, but imo what matters more is the design and materials.

I don't know why but coords like these are what Lolita really is to me. I just love it's simplicity, instead of having cupcakes on your head, star clips, other kind of busy accessories and a busy print dress.

>> No.9704863

I’ve been to meet ups where a lot of us incidentally wore old school and we were able to take some old school pictures. An old school meet sounds fun and I’d definitely attend, but I don’t think that even in a comm as large as mine there would be many people who’d be able to do true old school. You’d have people showing up in 2011 AP because “it’s old, too!” and lots of anachronistic materials e.g. chiffon blouses, modern embroidered tulle lace etc. because those are so ubiquitous now and I don’t think many people would be willing to buy an extra set of accessories or a new blouse in a colour they already have just because the lace isn’t old school enough. I only know maybe three people who would be able to put a truly old school coord together, and excluding everyone else from the meet isn’t really an option. So I think it can be done if the bar isn’t held too high.

If I had an old school meet this weekend I’d be wearing red tartan with white blouse/leg wear and black accessories. Tartan is the best.

Baby's Karami JSK is probably the classic example, the Hem Scallop JSK would also be a decent start.

Personally I would reccomend Baby over any other brand because they've released their most popular old school styles a million times so they're fairly cheap and common secondhand. Plus they're so distinct anyone familiar with the style knows right off that it's old school baby.

Look at enough old school pieces and magazines until you understand old school, then find an old school b&w dress you like instead of going for one of Baby's re-releases. Everyone who wants to try old school uses fucking hem scallop or babydoll jsk and there is nothing that says Baby's First Old School like it. There are plenty of old, easy to coord dresses b&w from Meta, Baby, AP, MAM, Cornet and other brands you could be doing instead, and then you won't look like you're jumping on the trend train.

My comm had an old school meet some time ago. Everyone tried their best but you could easily tell who actually lived those old days or knew at least the style. I get almost all of my pieces from secondhand japanese sites (mercari, fril, auctions etc) and having a small understanding of japanese is extremely useful.
Usually what I do is use keywords like brand names or acronyms, then set the search parameters to things like "ladies" "onepiece" and then sort by price. With mercari and fril, its difficult to figure out some things, (like filtering out sold items) without knowing /some/ kanji but you can probably do it with google translate.
Also, sometimes adding in colours to searches helps too. Like searching "btssb 黒" and just looking at the cheap stuff usually comes up with some good results.

>> No.9716241

Can't save you from your foolish love of white, as I almost exclusively own black. However, I feel your velveteen pain. I have dresses I'd wear all the damn time if they weren't old enough to drive themselves to a meet.

My velvets are hardy, but replacing almost any item (main piece or otherwise) in my closet would be hell, which is the worst part of liking old school.

>> No.9716245

I'm still really upset because an OP I really love started disintegrating shortly after I bought it, and I think would be too fragile for more than very gentle, infrequent use even after an expensive repair. Why does oldschool do this to us. I've seen the same OP up for sale a couple of times and always have to stop myself buying another, since I don't know if the first one I bought was just stored badly or if the material and age make it inherently fragile. The other velvets I've had have thankfully been fine.

>> No.9716253

Oh that would be awful. I've heard stories of that happening, but I guess I've been stupid lucky with velvet thus far. Velveteen ribbons are what have been awful to me. Gotten one dress where the ribbon is half bald, and another where the ends were fraying because the finishing wore out. But that's much more fixable than velvet disentigrating.

>> No.9716257

I'm so sad, I recently wore one of my older meta jsks [2004] out and the hem got stuck on something as I was walking and ripped. That's the worst part about wearing old school imo [and I wear it all the time]... it's pretty hard to replace most of them if they get damaged. :( luckily it was just the back them and the rip was pretty clean, but I don't like having damaged clohing. :( I'm going to patch it up and do what I can, but even then, I have to live knowing it's damaged.

Where's doing good aprons these days? I especially love ones with lots of pintucks, embroidery and heirloom details, but I don't have a sewing machine so I can't make one. The only one I found was Excentrique and it's way too long for oldschool. Look at this bit of wasted potential from BtSSB, it would have been gorgeous as an actual apron you could wear with lots of different dresses but they only released it as a fake apron OP...

No, a lot of people have multiples. I have a Baby dress in two colours and have other colourways of a bunch of stuff I already own on my wishlist.

Anyone know anything about dating old school items other than looking in the GLB and street snaps to find similar? Are tags (on the clothing) helpful at all, and is there anywhere that mentions different iterations of tags certain brands have gone through? I have found a couple of my really old skirts in the GLB and lolibrary, and occasionally I notice that the items in GLB ads differ from the page in lolibrary, such as the skirt shown here. I actually have it in black and it matches the listing on lolibrary, but the one in this ad is clearly different. Was this one rereleased? Maybe the final production turned out different?

>> No.9731609

Never bought from taobao so I can't help you there, but re: bloomer length, it depends on how tall you are, how long your dress is, and how much you want your bloomers to peek.
Peeking bloomers look the best when it's not obvious that they're bloomers; if the peeking lace makes your plain OTKs look like they have lace at the top, it's a good length imo.

Are you thinking of coordinating this with all white? You can do that but I'm not sure how nice the end result will look.
Anyway, stark white looks odd paired with off white or beige/ivory, especially for a skirt like this; if it makes you feel better, brand pieces that are listed as "white" are actually off white more often than not, and I don't think the shades have to match perfectly unless the difference is very obvious.

Is this a pre-btssb tag or did the seller confuse something?

>> No.9757551

Is it on lolibrary as a BtSSB piece?
A lot of Japanese sellers will list off brand stuff or pieces from small brands as being from a similar more popular brand, just so it shows up in more searches. I’ve seen Mary Magdalene pieces listed as VM or IW, RPA listed as AP etc. Maybe that’s what happened here. I don’t recognise the tag or the coat itself at all.

>> No.9757559

Because they didn't care about monster poof as much as we do now. The cut of the skirt might also just require a certain shape of petticoat. Usually non-gathered skirts (like trapezoid ones) need small A-line pettis

>> No.9757586

Yeah both skirts require an a-line petti. I tried my MLT one and it was a squeeze. Thankfully I had one of my older pettis that's really deflated (I use it for layering) and it was fine.
Honestly, both skirts feel way more wearable for everyday life ans more elegant than some of my modern pieces.

/r/ing coords made with empire waist jumperskirts and OPs, I just bought a gorgeous old school BTSSB empire waist jsk from a friend at a swap meet but have no idea how the hell to coordinate it. gothic and classic coords preferred.

>> No.9757868

Adding to this that some oldschool bell-shaped skirts with inbuilt petticoats actually need an A-line petti to look good, because the tulle inside is shaped to compensate and turn an A-line into a bell. If you put an actual bell petti into these skirts, however small, it either won't fit or will become a weird overstuffed rectangle.

>> No.9758366

Can you post a photo or a stock photo of it? It will help us help you coord it anon...

>> No.9758413

Annnd it didn't fit lol, anyone want to buy it? I'm thinking $60 + s&h. It's this in all black, I have the collar but the string in front is missing. https://lolibrary.org/items/btssb-little-princess-velveteen-op will do a proper measure and throw it up on lm later.

>> No.9758944

I'm so excited, anons. The skirt arrived today and it fits fantastic. Lolibrary has the waist at 62cm and Tokyo Alice said 64, but really it's 68 so it fits so comfortably, no need to alter at all! Now I'm REALLY going to be hunting for that top...

It's like a massive heavy blanket; a cat's best friend!

The red color will also be re-released this March. But I believe the only way to get it, is by reserving it in the A/P Harajuku store during Laforet’s Grand Bazaar on the 25th of January at 13:00.

What is the going rate for Meta velveteen stuff these days?

depends on the items. post a collagepic of the ones you want to sell, with details about condition? maybe we can suggest starting prices and you can put them up for auction

Triple Frill? OP, missing one of the detachable arm bows but in good condition, especially for it's age. Comes with underskirt. I'd give it a B rating for having a slight used feeling.

Velveteen JSK is in really great condition, A~B rating cause it looks like new.

Skirt is also in good condition, also a B rating for slight used feeling, comes with underskirt.

Headbow in blue, matches the OP, JSK & skirt, has wire in it, also in good shape, b rating.

Princess Pinafore op, lace needs ironing and the velvet has a used feeling, good condition, b rating.

Same velveteen headbow, but in black, has wire, b rating.

Probably overpaid for these iems and won't get back what I paid but I'm fine with that.
I also have a BTSSB set in Ivory I may sell, will post a pic of that too.

The BtssB set, it's velveteen, and in gorgeous condition.
But it's a smaller size, especially the skirt.
I would not recommend the skirt over 63cm waist.
At some point I found the same skirt and bought it so I could alter it, but can't bring myself to taking it apart.
The second skirt has now waist ties.
The bustier goes up to 86cm bust.

>> No.9763752

Can’t help you much with pricing, but definitely put these up for auction. I’m very interested in the two JSKs!

>> No.9763756

oh, there's 2 skirts?

the only pic I could find on Lolibrary, it's older than I thought it was

>> No.9763781

Really? The jsk's have shirring so that's good news.
The skirt is pretty small though <65cm an the OP isn't super small but it's not really generous either.

If I sell these they will definitely go on LM.
Plus I'll post a link to my auctions in the sales thead here too.
But as of right now I still don't know if I actually want them gone or not, I'm such a hoarder lol.
They are so pretty but my taste is moving towards a more mature and gothic style.
I feel guilty when these just hang in my closet when someone may actually want to wear them iyswim?

Yes, I got the same skirt 2x.
Was planning making a handbag, rectangle headddress, katyusha from it and a waist extender from it as I'm only a few cm's too large for it (my waist is 65cm and I can close the button, but it's not very comfortable) but I'm too much of a wuss to take it apart desu.
I'm only thinking of selling it cause I got the black set now, which was one of my dream sets.

>> No.9763794

What a bummer that the skirt is so small! I'm the same measurements as you so it wouldn't be much good. Can you post some pictures of the black one too? I haven't seen these before and they're really gorgeous.

File: 52 KB, 424x592, babybustier.jpg [View same] [iqdb] [saucenao] [google] [report]

This is the bustier in black, it's truly gorgeous.
And it fits like a dream (I have 85cm bust, 65cm waist).
The (black) skirt works well for me with a black elastic waist extender I bought on ebay, the bustier falls over it so none can tell anyway, same goes if you use the waist ties I guess.
I only got a stock pic off the skirt though.
I can post big detail shots of the ivory set if you like as well.

They had such small stock pics back then, but here's the black skirt.

>> No.9763868

I think I may have been the one to sell you that Meta OP, anon, and desu I'd gladly buy it back from you. I really regret selling it and have it in red now, but I like(d) the black more. Or, if you'd want to trade for the red, then I'd be down.

Sadly, mine is the blue version (sorry, the picture I posted isn't very clear).
I'm sorry you regret selling your black OP anon, hope you find it again some day.

>> No.9763883

Oops, my bad!

No worries, it's not a super rare piece, I've seen it a few times, so it'll come home one day. I think the blue and green colorways are the most sought after, though, so good luck with your sales! If it goes up on LM then I'll be watching for it. The red is so bright I probably won't wear it, but oh man, I just love this OP.

>> No.9765406 [DELETED]

A part of me is interested in this op and another part of me has enough velveteen I hardly even wear. I'd say start at $200 and go down from there.

Completely done with lolita then or just velveteen?

>> No.9765576

No on both accounts.
I'm not quitting Lolita and I still love velveteen.
Just not sure if I'm keeping these pieces, that's all.
I'm afraid I'll regret selling these though, having a hard time deciding if I want them gone or not.

I mean, he isnt the OG Usakumya, but he's still pretty old, and hella cute, I probably spent too much on him but I am really excited for him to arrive! Does anybody have the OG usakumya? I might be interested in the skirt but I wouldn't fit the bustier.

>> No.9766151

Tbh the skirt would probably be worth more if you altered it, speaking from experience tiny oldschool pieces are really difficult to sell and having lots of accessory items would be popular. Honestly I'd take it to a seamstress to extend the waist if you're scared of that part.

>> No.9766187
