Ugh yes. As an (almost) former chubby chan, I got into Lolita because of VM and dieted hard to lose enough weight to fit. I was 5cm away on my waist line from being able to fit into VM. I was planning on buying myself something from the next release if I made my goal. Still probably will, since it sounds like they'll exist for at least part of 2018.

Like wtf, people complaining about the classy tailored aline dresses not fitting larger girls-- it's gonna look SHITTY on fat girls. It's not going to have the same shape if you're a fucking sphere.

It's expensive to change the patterns, use more fabric and design clothes that suit a different body shape (a body shape that the designers and staff don't have lol). I fit VM bust and waist, but the shoulder, underarm, and arm are too small. If there was more ease in the garment I could wear it comfortably. If you’re not pretty much exactly the same size, height, and body type as the fit model, most of their pieces are uncomfortable.
I think that people aren’t wishing they made 5XL, but that dresses were more comfy

The problem is that fatties tend to also be poor. It’s easy to say you will support these brands but you don’t see the numbers match when it comes down to it.

I think VMs downfall is that they waited too long to try to accommodate to what people wanted, and never did it the way people liked. Yes vm has made pieces that have shirring but really people wanted those “iconic” dresses to be rereleased with bigger sizing or shirring instead of the flowy look they went with. People wanted the structured look, and a lot of people never could fit into it because it was too tight in the shoulders, bust, waist, etc. You don’t have to be fat to struggle to fit their ops, for me my arms are a bit too big. They should have been making the pieces they did in 2016/2017 that was roomier years ago. The idea that their stuff fits small ppl only has been around for as long as I can remember and they didn’t do enough to dispel it. I think seeing westerns in the last few years opened their eyes but it’s too little too late.

Not OP, but offering size ranges in a niche fashion isn't always realistic or financially solvent. People forget that these are small businesses operating on a fairly thin profit margin. It costs more to make multiple sizes and the sales don't always justify the expense.

BTSSB tried doing affordable larger sizes for some of their classic dresses a few years back, but they stopped because the bigger sizes didn't sell well enough. I personally saw more than one fat girl walk into Baby SF to try on these dresses, then hesitate to spend $160 on them even though they fit. The L-size dresses were on the rack for months once all the other sizes were gone and ended up on sale for half off. After overhead and shipping expenses, BTSSB did not make a profit off those dresses. In the end, they just increased their general sizing in order to meet increased demand from overseas, but they still only offer one size.

JetJ has two sizes that boil down to Japanese average (size 1) and Western average (size 2). They are made-to-order only and they no longer offer custom alterations on most pieces in order to keep costs down. IW sizing stops at the equivalent of a US Women's Large at the max end of their shirred pieces.

Could VM have tried going the JetJ/IW route? Maybe. Catering more obviously to the average-sized Western body might have helped, but it still may not have saved them. VM might not have been solvent enough at any point in the past few years to add a size range even if they had wanted to.

And keep in mind that the people who are most obnoxiously vocal about not seeing dresses in their size are a minority of entitled HAES bitches who wouldn't put their money where their mouth is anyway. Japanese brands know this and have no patience for it. But they do have consideration for normal-sized Western girls who are happy to spend their money, and most brands that can manage are already are catering to that demographic.

I just now that Tokyo Pirates/Acciotokyo is in Tokyo but also offers to drive to different cities for ~5000 yen + 750 yen for every 30 minutes after a hour drive has passed. Mint Kismet lives in Osaka, but I don't know if she still offers a shopping service. She charges 15%+waiting fee+transportation fee and also only offers Registered Airmail or EMS shipping, which sucks if you're european. So yeah, you're better off with just paying your friend 50 Euro.

I really hope they do another round of winter coats before closing down for good. Their coats are by far the prettiest and most elegant in the fashion.

I'm newer to the fashion than probably most in the thread, finally gotten past my taobao and cheap sale items only phase last year and started buying full price items new from brands as I've realized it's worth it for the quality and getting the exact items you want. I'm just rather sad that newer girls may never get the chance to order new from them anymore. In the future when girls are told to stay away from Milanoo replica trash they'll be told about old VM, the long dead queen brand of classic. Personally I'm very sad I'll never get to see the press room, even if it's just a small "shop" it's still something - I head to Japan in May, just after it will close, sigh.

I'm freaking out. VM and Excentrique are the staple brands of my wardrobe. I actually don't know what I'm going to do without them. I mean, of course there will always be the secondhand market same as before. I still like Seraphim, Rosa Bianca and Sincerely but they rarely release new designs and are not always suitable for lolita. What you can do is try to find out who the designers of Excentrique are and follow their activities. There are some classic lolita brands so small they only sell things at events so you have to stalk them on twitter to know anything. I feel positive about Nimu continuing designing but it's hard to tell as long as Victorian Maiden is still in business but she already changed her social media account to her real name.

I want to stay positive but when one of my favorite brands closed down back in the day (mukuro), the designer went high-end normie lol. I bought some of her things for my office job.

IW's aesthetic is nowhere near the same. It's a classic brand, sure, but other than that I don't think it's all that relevant. Isn't this the thread where we appreciate what made VM and Excentrique stand out? I don't think it's stupid at all to feel like they're leaving a void that existing brands won't be able to fill. Personally I don't really find IW's solids and A-lines quite as elegant, they're usually a little more cute-leaning to me. The silhouettes and materials just don't have that "straight out of a Victorian/Edwardian illustration" feel, if that makes sense. I have several IW pieces that I love, but I go for a pretty different look with them than what I do with my VM.

On the other hand, anons that mentioned Seraphim and Rosa Bianca are definitely close to the mark, although sadly those aren't viable as substitutes either.

The sad thing about VM's closing is that there aren't really any other brands that consistently release designs that are similar to their aesthetic. MM's designer used to work for VM and you can see a good amount of overlap in aesthetic there but MM is pretty much dead too.

The only brand I can think of off the top of my head is Akane & Alois.

JetJ recently joined weibo and they have more followers there than on twitter or instagram, just to give you an idea on how popular they are in China. What kind of sucks is that the Chinese lolitas get direct influence on re-releases and the direction of the brand towards OTT designs while the western community had to beg for years until we got re-releases of our favourite dresses. The brands have to adapt to the market, Excentrique and VM missed out on that completely. If they had reached out for the Chinese Market in time, I'm sure they would have had a chance.
