Question:

I've been toying with the idea of opening a small online shop with some handmade fandom-related bags and itabag bases, as well as some general fanmerch like charms and badges. I've been looking up materials and resources to start and have some specific ideas I'd like to try (also because I'm considering starting to do artists alley with a friend, so I'd like to make available online what I make for cons as well).
My question is, how much would you be willing to spend on a custom made base bag? With the amount of cheap bootleg choice, I'm a bit afraid this isn't really profitable but I'd like What sort of bag type do you prefer? What colors would you like to see? Which materials do you prefer?
I'm considering making a sew simple canvas totes with a vinyl cover in a few basic colors to put for sale as a starter but I'd love to hear people's personal preferences so I can then upgrade to more specific bag styles.

>>9763599
*but I'd like to try.

>> No.9763604

>>9763599
Quality is the most important part. I don't want a single layer of cheap material that isn't going to handle the weight. I'd expect a full lining and a decent design. Unfortunately aside from the colle (ugh that slapped their logo all over it which ruins the bag). Most bags just look really cheap and shoddy

>> No.9763605

>>9763585
Do you mean make the insert blue or give some of the charms a blue backing? Considering the main color scheme for p5 is red, black, white and sometimes yellow maybe red would work better...

>> No.9763621

>>9763604
Thank you for your input! Any specific material you're fond of or that you absolutely would not want? I have a hard time finding some materials in my home country so I'm doing online research for buying resources and any suggestions/preferences are very welcome.
Full lining for sure, I always like including a pocket inside for important belongings so, lining is definitely a given.
Design is one of my issues, I'd like to know what do people look for in a base bag. I have some designs in mind for some character/fandom specific bags but I was considering to keep those commission-based aside super popular stuff, it's honestly the plain base bags that I'm having a bit of trouble with. Do people prefer a pocket like the swimmer totes? A zippered window like wegos and alike? Having a vinyl cover to be completely removable instead?
I don't recall which one is the colle atm, is it the one with a zippered bottom?

>> No.9763624

>>9763621
Just my two cents, but I sewed my own base bag (it's a tote, nothing too fancy or complicated) and I made sure to add a zipper to be able to shut it completely, so that I could take it to cons and not have to worry about pickpockets.

>> No.9763650

>>9763624
Noted, thank you very much!
I personally can't handle wearing bags that don't fully close because I'm constantly worrying over pickpockets as well (there are quite some in my city's downtown area), so I will keep that in mind for base bags as well.

>> No.9763652

>>9763605
I meant the insert. I know about p5's color scheme, but blue and yellow are complementary, and there's already a good chunk of red in your merch. That, and I personally feel like red+yellow is an easy color combo to screw up--if both of them are too saturated it just reminds me of mcdonald's. I feel like red would only work for a backing if you made sure it's a really dark red, so the merch's bright red doesn't get lost in it.

>>9763599
Keep in mind, at cons most of your customers are going to be trendhoppers and bandwagoners, and they rarely care about their base quality as long as it's cheap. Conversely, there was a chick at magfest selling the damn cat ear backpack and angel/devil wego knockoffs for $40 and she (sadly) did pretty well. So trendhoppers definitely seem willing to spend more for cute shit.

Got my part of my December haul in! Sorry for the terrible quality phone photo. I've started planning a layout for my Yume Nikki bag, but I'm waiting on a few more things before I can official begin to pin it.

I'm not really sure what to do with the stickers? I wanted to put them in my bag but I'm hesitant to make any permanent changes to them.

>>9763779
I display most of mine on command hooks as well! The only one I haven't displayed is my heaviest bag because it's mostly acrylic charms and I'm terrified of it falling and everything breaking.

That's actually a really good point, thank you for that. I didn't really think about it but now that you mention it it is true that I see a lot of people just generally dropping money on cute/trendy shit regardless of being quality or not. I'd say I could churn out more stock with less quality control for cons and then keep the best quality for the online shop but at the same time I'd feel bad about it, doesn't seem fair. But I could definitely spend extra time on items such as base bags since they need to be sturdy and long lasting, while not spending as much time on more con-oriented items, I suppose (like themed items for fotm series).
I'm sad to hear that person selling the bootlegs for 40$ was doing good profit but not really surpised since I see it on the fb group all the time (and at cons of course, with other items. Suprisingly, itabags only recently have started to appear at my country's cons so I haven't seen anyone selling base bags yet).
Thank you once again for your input!

What makes the "best" base bag is highly opinion based. That's why there's so many different types available, because everyone likes something a little bit different. It's just like any other fashion in that regard.

I'm personally a fan of window bags (like the standard heart backpack, or the WEGO side totes). The biggest feature that I'd want in something designed specifically to be an itabag is an easy way to attach a base board to the pocket so it doesn't slide around and it doesn't sag, because that's a problem I've had in most brand bags.

I'd also want heavy duty metal zippers. If I'm buying hand made, I'm doing so for quality not price point.

You're trying to make a Knights-themed, right? Right now, none of the merch feels like it belongs together. Even if you change the layout, it'll still look unbalanced, because each piece has different things going on; the can badges are all different colors and sizes, etc. If they were all of one character, those differences wouldn't seem as dramatic, but unit bags are more difficult. They're not impossible, though; >>9750034 is a good example! Even though each character has a different color scheme, the items all match, so it looks more cohesive. Playing up the unit colors helps too, so the navy background in your bag was a good choice... it just can't pull all the weight.
Try looking for more merch from the same sets you've already bought. It should be easiest to complete those heart badges, because you've got 2/5, but I don't know how much any of the sets cost and don't care enough to check.

Imo she has a lot of good ideas for bags that would compliment a costume (the witch cauldron, coffin, and mansion bags) but for an ita bag they are too specific. I have a small handful of items on preorder (plushies, pins, there are some themed fanmade necklaces I'm going to be purchasing sometime soon), but one of the characters in this pairing is popular as hell. His official merch gets snatched up fast and/or gets sold for a high amount on secondhand sites it'll take me a while to gather more items. How acceptable is it to don a bag which is rather empty? $25 isn't too bad. That bag usually goes for 13-15$ and a $10 or less convenience fee for being able to look at it and pick it up in person is pretty reasonable. A lot of cons sell those bags in the $30-40 range, which IS a huge rip off.

You've got a nice start to your bag! It's pretty empty but WIPs all have to start somewhere.

Check out the FAQ and consider making a backing board with an appropriate fabric for your bag. Personally I've always liked black bags as a start for most series.

The guide is heavily skewed towards buying merch for Japanese fandoms, so the same sources won't work for you to pick up official goods. But some of the GF official stuff is really nice. Cool pocket watches and stuff. A Bill Cypher plushie might be a good way to take up a lot of space while you're still buying new merch - he's relatively flat so should fit in the bag.

This one is mine. It's a WIP but I wanted to imagine a corkboard inside the base bag but it's the character's (In this case, Sonic's) corkboard instead.

I know I want to put something on the sides in the inside and maybe put something on the outside but I want it to feel more personal to him and I'm struggling to figure out how. Maybe put some sticky notes in there? I want to show the corkboard in there but without it feeling bare.

Your concept is interesting for an easy to make bag with minimal effort, but it falls apart in execution. Since the cork board is smaller than the window it looks haphazard and messy instead of purposefully disheveled.

Although on a broader note, fabric covered cork board would be an interesting backing board choice for how easy it would be to rearrange items. Might be perfect for a bag that's still growing as the owner buys more merch. Standalone corkboards are frail, but could easily be cut to the right size and mounted on something cheap like a piece of thick cardboard. then they're suddenly both sturdy and practical. Make the push pins cute or thematic and it won't even matter that they're visible from an aesthetic standpoint. Pic related just looks like any other flower embellishment I've seen on a bag.

>> No.9770568

>>9770563
Hmm, I'll have to redo the cork then, unless I can put a boarder? I did double up on the cork. Otherwise, I'll have to try the thick cardboard under it. I'll have to find some proper embellishments.

Q. Does your series have a good amount of merchandise?

A. Yes, it has enough for bag.
Then buy that. It's ok to use fanmerch but you should try and fill most of your bag with official. A couple of fanmerch charms and badges can add a nice personal touch.

B. No as it has one or two, or none at all.
Then you don't have a fucking choice really.

I used to buy absurd amounts of fan merch for a certain series I like because there are so few people drawing for it so I bought whatever I could find. I ended up with like three itabags for it made mostly out of fanmerch with a lot still left over, though there is what itabag-able official merch I could find on there, plus I buy other merch and dvds to support the series. I didn't buy the fan merch specifically to make itabags with, but I just ended up with so much that I needed a way to store them nicely.

I do agree to some degree that if a series has a lot of itabag-able people should stick to official merch as much as possible but at the same time, a lot of official merch tends to look really samey which leads to a lot of similar-looking bags, which may then lead to people wanting to use fanmerch for a more unique and personal bag. Plus, some series have merch that is technically itabag-able but is ugly/doesn't fit certain base bags aesthetically or physically.

Sorry for the ramble, pic to contribute.

The original idea of itabags was teenage girls in japan stocking up on rubber straps and can badges of their absolute favorite characters and hanging them all off their bag at the same time, which then caught on as a trend after it was picked up by street fashion photographers.

So, no, the original idea of an itabag was "god I sure do fucking love this" and the community has evolved over time. The english itabag community has divisive and strong opinions about fan merch, and we're literally never going to agree because how you feel about fan merch stems directly from WHY you made your bag in the first place.

Agree with this anon >>9771281 fanmerch has it's time and place, and I don't think only using official merch is necessary for a nice itabag.

I got most items on my Miku bag in Tokyo when I went there over new years. She has tons of official merch and I bought pretty much anything of her I could find at the different merch shops, ignoring dupes and straight up ugly merch. I also went to Comiket, and there I bought lots of well made fanmade merch of her as well, because I love the character. Since she is a character that constantly gets new merch, I plan maybe swap out some of the fanmerch in the future when I can't fit more new stuff onto the bag. But some of the fanmade merch are my favorites because they are really pretty. As long as it's well made and look good I don't mind fanmerch.

I also would like to make an itabag for Rakan from LoL since he's my husbando, and he doesn't have any official merchandise, so then fanmerch is necessary.

Tl;dr: I think fanmerch can be nice as long as they are well made and look good.

You can run into the opposite problem with fanmerch, though. Some of it is so stylistic that it barely even resembles the original character anymore. Or it's done in a style or colour that clashes with a lot of official merch.

>> No.9771449

>>9771406
This is true too. On one of my bags I have some charms drawn in different styles, so I tried mixing them with repeats of official merch to try and "blend" them in. I think with unique merch that may potentially clash, you just have to choose between compromising the aesthetic of your bag or not using the merch at all if you can't find a way around it.

Agreed; this is why I'm very picky with the merch I collect. My husbando's official merch is incredibly samey so I do like to mix it up a bit, but I make sure to pick fan merch that looks good with the rest of the stuff I have rather than go for whatever kawaii desu crap that artists offer.
>Some of it is so stylistic that it barely even resembles the original character anymore
This is a huge pet peeve of mine; it's fine if someone has a different take on X character if it's just fan art, but if you're selling your art, making the characters recognizable is the bare minimum you can do.

I'm running into this issue with the official merch itself for my next project. All existing official items for what I'm collecting atm either have this ugly Mii-looking style or super adorable chibi style. Unfortunately the majority of it is the former, the latter is harder to find and has less characters available.
Also have not found any fanmerch so far, so I might have to make some myself to better match the chibis, even though the ugly items are official and a bit easier to find.

>> No.9771796

Westerners have to pay at least double for most official merch and most of the time that extra goes to shipping, not even the original company. Or its second hand which usually comes with character tax that definitely doesnt make it back to the creators. I dont think there's anything wrong with fan merch as long as it looks good since we have such a higher gate of entry into the hobby than the Japanese and other countries with Animate et al.

That being said Ive only found a small amount of fan merch for my son that isn't garbage.

This only applies if you're making a bag for a tax character. It works out cheaper for us if we buy merch for unpopular since it's usually extremely cheap compared to buying a full box, and it's bountiful.

But I'll say it again, and keep saying it:

If you can't afford it then you're in the wrong hobby. Itabags are fucking expensive, it's part of what makes them cringe, it's part of the devotion. If you can't suck it up and pay then just do something else. Even fanmerch isn't cheap.

I think with enamel pins, you are going to have to embrace the messy layout, since they'd all be unusual shapes. You can kinda puzzle-piece them around each other but it's not going to have the neatness of a badge bag.

>> No.9772526

>>9763594 is literally all enamel pins. You have to be 18 to post on 4chan.

>> No.9772529

>>9772526
obviously the visual layout works because they are all pins in the same series and the bag is a little bland as it just has pins and it clearly wouldn't work if they weren't of the same series. I have stated that I clearly lack the continuity since I'm doing one particular character that isn't as popular

>> No.9772532

>>9772525
thanks, that's a good point to consider! I wasn't thinking too much of puzzle piecing them too closely but considering their shape in the whole layout would certainly be helpful and something I'll consider

Do you not realize that practically every item used in itabags are "an unusual shape"? Rubber straps, acrylic charms, enamel pins are all oddly shaped. Ffs if you're such a long time lurker you would have seen the handful of enamel pin heavy bags posted here.

For someone who's asking how to stick pins in a bag, you sure are making a lot of assumptions.

This is bait but I'm taking it.

I have a theory that I am open to discussion on and think is an interesting concept, and not that I am claiming is iron clad fact:

Culturally, fan merch takes a similar space in American weeb culture to official goods in native Japan. If you want to stock up a bunch of pretty things for the most recent, current airing flavor of the month show at a reasonable price pulling in a pile from the AA at a convention is a similar experience to hitting a bunch of stores or gatchas if you live in Japan. Stocking up on official goods for an American fan is a more involved process with less impulse-wallet-pocket feel good fueling it, especially for a series that is recent enough it has not trickled down to vendors hall yet (who at least in my region are much slower to pick up a series than AA is).

Is Itabag Palace a safe store to buy from? I heard not so great things about Anime on Stage, and I guess they're an offshoot of that company. They're gonna be at a con I am attending and I want to know if I should even bother buying something from them.

No it's just that westerners are too cheap and lazy to pay the import costs. Most of the fanmerch bags are bandwagoners, the others are people who have no merch available to buy so they have a legit reason.

So, I bought these buttons a while back for an Saiouma itabag and basically I'm obviously going to only be using two of them, but I was thinking that perhaps I'd get a really small bag to put the other buttons on. Thoughts?

Not harsh at all. They're making a bag for the trashiest pairing in the game. They're claiming the merch is rare (it's not) and they're asking if they should be making a bag they don't give a fuck about "Because they bought these badges on a whim last year" ..typical Facebook user behavior and the cancer that's killing these threads. They don't belong in this hobby if they're this dumb. Bag is gonna look shit if they're asking such basic

the bag came a while ago, oh my goodness it's ugly. i love it.
I've gathered enough merch now my amiami shipment came today, meaning i can build the basic part now. of course I'll be adding more when i have it buy it! thanks to all of you for the help!
i just wanted to ask, do you guys think i should use grey (light or medium) or turquoise (kiibo colour) for the back piece? I'm torn.
its still a very-much wip but i wanna start pinning stuff so I don't lose them lol

Are there any authentic itabag sellers (zakkamart, itamate, etc) in Dealers room? I want to update my bag to a larger size.

Also, any bag inspo for plushies? I have a few I want to display but it won't fit in the badge/charm bag.

Is a non-window type itabag feasible? I'd love to use that wego dreamer backpack (pic related) and make a cardcaptor sakura themed one, but it'd probably have to all be flat merch.

Could turn the bottom front pocket into a window but it probably wouldn't look as nice as the already windowed bags.

Anon thoughts?
