I only went to AM once and it was last year on short notice. It was fine as I stayed mostly to myself and tried to avoid drama. I was mainly in the dealers hall. The city needs to throw more weight behind Comicpalooza. They routinely bring awesome guests, actively court locals for programming, promotion, and after-parties (admittedly hit-or-miss, usually a miss but it’s more than Matsuri does, Comicpalooza needs to stop riding Metal Geeks and Friends’s dicks so much though) and use way more of the GRB than Matsuri ever has. I was looking at the tickets earlier this week, and I saw that there were meal options? It's not even just snacks for $35 with tea and service. Based on the room it's going to be in, I highly believe it's going to be shit just like what I heard about last year (it's in that same windowless panel room iirc), but it really makes me wonder if there will be any improvement at all food-wise.

I don’t get the maid cafe thing in general because it seems sad to pay to have someone pretend to care about you for an hour, but whatever.

How much are actual maid cafes in Japan? AM cafe is $35 to sit in a windowless fluorescent lit carpeted panel room, so I’m guessing the actual experience must be several times more expensive?

50-70 bucks depending on the hour and how much you get. Imo, Swallowtail's food is fucking delicious (in japan, idk about AM) so the butler experience is just the cherry on top. Of course, at AM you're guaranteed to have a butler that actually speaks English.

They panicked like a week ago or so and wound up getting people from the Paul Mitchell school to do it because a lot of companies that did makeup at the con prior to this year got burned in the past and don't want to come back. Either the Paul Mitchell School people did their homework and backed out of the con or the announcement was made too early a la the Overwatch VAs.
