Whats the deal with those girls who always have to have to cosplay the main character or the high femme character all the time? In groups, they always insist on being the main girl (like miku, madoka, sailor moon, etc.) because its like they dont get enough attention in their every day life.

What is it to you what other people want to cosplay? Some people just have a taste for certain types of characters or they feel that they suit them more.
As much as I like some mature looking characters I do not have the height or facial structure to pull them off and would look ridiculous trying to do so.

i always talk about this kind of thing with my friends. there are girls who always cosplay what i like to call "ultimate waifus" they are usually characters a lot of guys swoon over for example:
sonico, dva, yuno, harley quinn, megumin, etc.
these are the same cosplayers that do "flavor of the month" cosplays too like darling in the franxx and doki doki literature club which have been the recent ones. i don't know, its basically just an attention grab to get more popularity imo.

Personally I try to be the main character in groups because my friends don't cosplay a lot, and I like to have something that is stand alone. However for shows like madoka magica all the girls are pretty great and stand alone imo so I wouldnt care. Sometimes I trade costumes with my friends so they are mc (and I'm the tall one)

Maybe they just like those characters? I have cosplayed both popular and obscure, main and secondary characters.

Also there are anime shows were the secondary characters are better and more cosplayed that the main ones, like the vampires from Owari no Seraph.

Because they go hand in hand. Of course the girls who want to cosplay girly characters will cosplay the main girl in girl shows because those characters are girly girls.

I never noticed a "high femme" thing (though I suppose now that you mentioned it they do tend to stick to super girly anime- probably due to bad taste).

I always just figured people who hoard the main character wants attention/can't handle the idea of someone in their group being better than them. Usually if they do it multiple times I'll give them a side eye.

Unless they truly are of course the best at sewing/cosplaying in their group. Then I suppose it's fine and makes sense. But then again there is nothing stopping them from purposely only letting shittier cosplayers join their group.
