Thanks anon, the last time I was around a /cgl/ meetup at MCM I stumbled across them by accident. It was 3 guys who I overheard talking about some drama and just the way they were talking was kind of off-putting because it felt like very closed-circle bitching. I can't remember what year it was but one of them was dressed as Moss from the IT Crowd.

Either way I don't think it matters because everyone seems to think I'm someone from a discord or something and if that Moss cosplayer still lurks these threads he's probably not gonna like me saying that about him.

That's a relief. Honestly though I've never felt inclined to go in any /cgl/ meet. I'm not saying everyone (or even most people) here are terrible, but these threads are always about drama, orgies or Michael Towers. I don't doubt the guy is a creep, but I don't like the vibe these threads give off with the constant obsession over certain individuals, it makes me feel like the UK /cgl/ community is a tight-knit village where everyone knows everyone's business and if you don't fit in you could end up ostracized and rumours about you spread. I know /cgl/ Comms in other regions are exactly the same, but that's why posting in any 'social' thread on /cgl/ is a landmine, it's like being back at school. It might be a wrong opinion, but I don't think anyone can be blamed for getting that impression when you read the threads.

I guess I just like the stupid weeb vibe of MCM where people are amazed by a weird hat or will scream references at each other from halfway across the Novotel. I don't consider being loud, fat or even annoying to be inherently bad traits. I've had bad experiences with fat autistic people too, but proportionately speaking I've found excitable weebs to be genuinely nice people as opposed to snide drama-mongers who act as though they are somehow superior to other people just because they aren't extroverted. You're at an anime convention, what were you expecting? Some sort of classy jazz club with a cosplay theme? I would rather spend my weekend having fun with positive people enjoying themselves than jaded, bitter people judging from afar in a small circle.

There's Lolita comms in most major cities, though you'll have a tough time in London as the comm is so large that the meets are more private friend cliques than comm meet ups.

In terms on conventions it depends where you are & what you're into as there's a large variety. MCM events are glorified dealers halls with a bit of everything, but they have a good cosplay scene as they host a number of international competitions. Film & Comic Con events run by Showmasters are more western focused with great guests. Eurogamer, Play Expo & Insomnia are all good gaming focused events, but I've never been so that's just going off what I've heard friends say. Hyper Japan is a good all around culture event and your best bet for Lolita & j fashion, they get good music guests too. Residential cons like Kitacon & Amecon are more anime based but is a 3 day commitment as there's no seperate day tickets and you have to pre-register. There's various Facebook social groups for each event I'd recommend joining if you're looking for friends.

Cosplayisland has a good run down of events too if you want to look for smaller events.

There was an article going round one of the trade pages saying Trading Standards were there last weekend. Apparently 1 guy had his whole stall dismantled as nothing he sold was genuine, one seller had plushies taken away for nothing being fire proof, and one guy was being done for selling bootlegs told to remove them and just quietly moved them to another stall in another hall and then got caught again....
