I never get why certain people only look at the dress to determine which style the compleet coord is. Things like headpieces, hair, makeup, blouses, thights, shoes and accessories can change the overal feel so much.

I'm sure it would, but from a Lolita perspective this is sweet dress, sweet headdress, sweet shoes, ambiguous tights and hair, and then gothic makeup. Gothic makeup doesn't make a Lolita coordinate gothic. Nonetheless, I like it and it looks cool, but I myself wouldn't call it gothic necessarily.

Is there actually such thing as "pastel goth", whether in Lolita or other jfashions? I see the term a lot associated with aesthetic pictures I like, but not so much with actual fashion. And unfortunately a lot of the associations with pastel goth seem to be ddlg/Melanie Martinez types. Are there any gothic Lolita looks that work with pastels?

There is pastel goth fashion, in a way; it's more of a fashion trend than a subculture afaik, and while there are people who still wear it (at least on social media, idk if these people wear their fashion out of the house or just post pics on their sm for likes), it was a lot more common to see in the earlier 2010s, especially on tumblr.
Having said that, pastel goth is not jfash and not goth. It's often equated with creepy cute style, right? That was incorporated into lolita in 2013 iirc, with sweet prints on black or lavender and eyeball bows/bats/plastic pastel cross necklaces but again, it's more of a trend that came and went than an actual substyle, and like anon said, it's not gothic.

Colors and the way a coordinate is styled (ie makeup) contribute to the overall substyle it falls under. It's very possible for coordinates to walk the line between classic and gothic, of course makeup would push them more into gothic territory.

I hate how every single gothic thread involves so much bitching about what is or isn't gothic. The distinction between substyles is not cut and dry, and essentially boils down to a feeling they evoke which is highly subjective. Some brands/cuts/prints/colors/themes/whatever are obviously more geared toward evoking the gothic feel, but something can have both sweet(or classic) and goth traits and still belong in a thread like this. Nobody gives a shit if a coord isn't gothic enough according to your personal tastes.
