I'm a (hopefully soon-to-be) newlita who's waiting on her first shipment, but how's the general opinion on Taobao lolita quality nowadays? I was thinking of buying the big pieces like JSKs, OPs, and skirts from JP sellers and the things like blouses, tights, accessories, etc. from Taobao since Taobao's cheaper, or is that frowned upon? Or would it just be cheaper to order everything from Japan so I don't have to worry about shipping from two countries to the USA?

I didn't see a dumb question thread so sorry if this doesn't belong here.

Taobao is like ebay, it's a cluster of stores and every single one is different in terms of quality, and in general. I don't know them too well so I can't tell you which ones are the better ones, and I don't think it's strictly frowned upon to wear blouses and accessories from Chinese brands with Japanese brand; but please keep in mind that quality and design is very important, and you might not be able to tell when you're new.
Some Chinese brands cut corners and make odd design choices like slapping white tulle lace on cream/off white blouses, and it looks awful, while I've found that coordinating Japanese brand blouses etc. with main pieces always works out aesthetically because the blouses were specifically intended to be worn with these dresses, if that makes sense?
You can start like this if you want but imo if you want to save time and money you should just get brand blouses. Buy them secondhand if you can't afford them new.

I've spent up to $300 on a collective haul once, i.e. from two different shopping services and several different sources/sellers, iirc it got me several main pieces, blouses, socks, and accessories. I'm very patient though and comb through sales to find good deals.

It's not frowned upon per say, but it's also sale season at the moment and with blouses you can totally tell. Not only do Chinese brands just not really take the care JP brands do, but >>9945601 is right that brand blouses are pretty fail safe. Accessories aren't really worth the brand price tag unless you want a specific set, and for legwear I find you can also just look in western department stores for decent quality tights with cute designs. You can save on international shipping that way.

I can't remember the original source but I remember seeing this blogpost of a bunch of different lolitas totalling the costs for full coords. They ranged from a couple hundred to over 1000 usd. How much people actually spend at once though really depends on the person. There's a huge difference between reserving a full set new from brand stores, and trawling auction sites for individual pieces over time and accumulating them at a SS. I'm not sure if there's a mail thread going right now but it might give you a rough idea of what gulls order at least.

Brand blouses are super reasonable second-hand on Lacemarket and Closet Child. Closet Child's prices are reasonable, but shipping can be expensive so if you can find a few blouses you like on CC it will be worth it.

Brand blouses are worth the quality, and on LM sellers will discount a blouse a lot just because it's wrinkled or has a small stain that you can remove when you receive it.

It's obviously on purpose if you look at which prints they choose to do this way, and if it was a mistake they would stop doing it. I think some of those prints would look "too much" if they were brightly coloured on cotton and you couldn't do some of the details as well like the transparent cards.

AP never really topped it. Halloween prints since then were Magic Amulet, Horror Garden and Halloween Treats. Halloween Treats and Magic Amulet were normal prints on chiffon, Halloween Treats was just kinda fug and didn’t hit the mark, Magic Amulet just kind of didn’t have enough cutesy AP-ness. Horror Garden is a contender, I think, but Holy Lantern has a bit of an edge in its simplicity, whereas Horror Garden is a bit more restricted in its one-look-ness.

Holy Lantern itself is pretty special, there aren’t that many flocked prints to begin with, and still not many new flocked releases. It’s got pretty decent structural details — the zipper jsk is interesting, the hw jsk is toned down and flies under the radar pretty easily, the OP is cutesy shit. Something to appeal to most folks (so long as you aren’t too tall or too fat that it looks too tiny on you, that is).

I never really got in on the craze at all and didn’t do any of the MTOs. It’s just one of those dresses where the longer you think about it, the more it seems like a versatile dress that still looks good despite being released years ago. We’re only rolling our eyes at it because it’s like on its, idk, 6th? 8th re-re-re-re-re-re-re-rerelease? And everyone already owns it. But by itself it’s still a pretty decent dress overall.

It’s payday bitches!!!! And I worked a buttload of over time!! I’m in the mood to buy a whole new cord set. There’s this forest green anglic pretty dress with like stuffed unicorn and ram heads (gold, white and purple colors I think). I can’t find an image of it. But I wanted to see if anyone else saw it and thought it was a little too... stale? Maybe I’m overlooking the fact the colors might be a little hard to match.

Magic Amulet did well for its cutsew op, and but their op went onto sale with one of the jsks. I agree it isn’t as cute and the high waist jsk is weird. Weakest of them, with the awkward overlay.

Horror garden did pretty well, op and jsk sold out fast but not instant fast. I don’t think it was as liked here until a bit later. Bustier was the best part, and they should try that look again.

Holy lantern has a more forgiving cut on their op, and it sold out in minutes. Zipper aspect of the jsk and skirt imo are very cool, but the op ended up being the most wanted cut and especially the rarer ones like black and black.

Halloween treats did pretty well, I believe the jsk sold well, op did ok. Accessories were the highlight imo, sold out within minutes and got a restock.

The AP USA site has a rewards points system in place. It doesn't count for special orders or lucky packs tho.

The stamp cards are only for in-store purchases. I think I read on the AP card that it can be used in any store but I'd have to check.

Every other release, plus 90% of taobao stores are print releases. Half of them are predictably chiffon.

Flocked and devore releases come out less often, and simply stand out because of this. Especially if you frequently go to meetups, the prints tend to blur together after a while, so a textural print stands out more.

You don't have to like them personally. All you need is to understand there's very good reasons other girls like it so much, regardless of whether it'd look good on you personally.
