This is why I always tell people not to make lolita versions of their regular clothes even if it's alternative fashion. Almost always end up looking like crap. Don't get me wrong, I like things like punk lolita. But the nice punk lolita outfits aren't trying to still be punks with punk attitude and all, they just take aspects from punk fashion and use them in lolita.

Most people who do this are too stuck up with their subcultures and want to mix them while staying true to them to actually make it look good from a fashion perspective. It kinda feels like the lack of knowledge of western subcultures is exactly why Japanese could make things like punk lolita work.

I'll admit my taste is pretty questionable, I have no real defense there, but I definitely prefer the OP pic. The petticoat hanging out in the pic you posted just looks weird, sort of like when people wear bloomers as pants (and yes people do that in Japan I'm sure, but it still looks weird).

The exposed petti is part of what makes it punk, breaking the rules of lolita and whatnot. There's nothing wrong with wearing jackets with lolita, brand release them all the time and its a staple of punk lolita. But people who attempt "punk lolita" are usually wearing some tacky thrifted normie thing that looks very out of place. it comes across as edgy or costumey (tee hee~ I'm so punk but I'm wearing a frilly dress! im such a rebel!) and it's obviously influenced by stereotypical western punk concepts instead of japanese punk, v-kei, or even kinderwhore fashion which was popular around the same time as proto gothic lolita.

It's kindof insulting that people who have no knowledge/appreciation of japanese alternative fashion or music try to define something that they have no part in.

Personally I'm more a fan of these kind of outfits (pic related) than the one >>9968917 posted, but yeah. It's not punk just because you trow a jacket on it. If it wasn't for the caption, I would have said, biker/metalhead/rocker * lolita anyways. Not that I ever seen that go well. Maybe some failed gothic attempt (the style of goth fashion where they whore latex and fishnets for clubbing mixed with lolita, where the mixing failed).

Imho, there is nothing wrong with wearing a jacket in lolita. But there is something wrong with wearing a jacket randomly on a coord, or any item randomly in a coord. I can't remember seeing a coord in which it actually fitted, and it defiantly doesn't make a normal coord a punk coord.

And yes, I do think it's kinda insulting, both to the Western alternative subcultures of which they look like ridiculed versions, which is often the result of kawaii-fying the appearance, as it is rude to the Japanese fashion and music. Either learn to understand something, or only appreciate it the way those who do understand it show it off. Trying to make stuff (like outfits) in what you don't understand just looks dumb and ignorant.

The difference with the Japanese isn't that they can mix it up and Westeners can't. It's that they aren't so fucking busy with looking like a special snowflake within an already alternative subculture that they forget to care about how it actually looks. They actually make sure to understand both looks and make it work, not create something that looks like a poser in both groups.

I'm mad at Westeners doing it because I haven't seen anyone doing it properly yet, and because most I saw are trying to be special snowflakes to begin with, who only wear it for events and photoshoots, instead of it being daily clothes they happen to wear and that suit their style. The mix just doesn't look natural, it looks way too forced. I'm just really done with this special snowflake behaviour, trying to be different even with the people who are different from the norm, and when it looks like crap hiding behind other subcultures you didn't even get well enough to get right. Similarly I'm done with taking subcultures you don't belong to and know nothing about because you like the look, and not only in lolita.

perhaps I worded poorly, but it's more the fact that I literally never saw someone take western subcultures and do them well into lolita, while I have seen Japanese take Japanese subcultures and do them well into lolita, together with the attitude most westeners have when mixing styles.

Honestly, westeners mix styles all the time as well. It works fine because they understand what they are doing. All I wish is that people understand before they crab something they don't know, instead of making a horrible mix of things they barely get and then hide behind "it's a mix, it doesn't follow all the rules. It's experimental, so not everyone has to like it" when it looks unbalanced and a total misinterpretation of a subculture.

And like I said, not just in lolita, in any fashion.

Didn't know giving an opinion on a related tread is whining if that opinion isn't positive. I don't care enough to continuously complain or worry about it in everyday life. But when I give my opinion, it doesn't become more positive just because I've been in alt fashion and subcultures for a long time.

Most people in alt subcultures can take posers apart, and they rarely come to us because they aren't fitting in anyways, so they don't bother much. But I don't know many who are actually positive about it if the subject is brought up. It's just not brought up all the time because it doesn't bother us directly beside making us look stupid to random outsiders, who often aren't that positive on us to begin with. All of them find it quite stupid to act like something you're not. Having an opinion that's not positive and everything is great is not the same as whining, and trying to explain that opinion after it comes up on a topic isn't whining either. They are there. They just tend to be more casual about it so it doesn't draw as much attention, while the extreme ones tend to have the "look at me being different. Different is so much better than normal" complex, where in the most extreme cases "normal" things are being shunned blindly because they are "normal" and therefore only for sheep who blindly follow the trend. Kinda like they feel like they have to proof that they are alternative. And it's not just special snowflakes, but I found many actual alternative people also act like this when they start out (especially kids and pubers/young adults, but sometimes also adults) and generally become more normal and calm later on.

You often won't recognise the ones with one or two alternative beauty features (I like that way of describing it), because it's not so screaming in your face. Especially in a fashion where things are already extreme and over the top, one or a few small things don't draw attention. I think the fact that people are not so busy with showing how different they are is why you mis it easily. I've seen many who have tattoos, or a piercing, but are otherwise normal looking. I have multiple alternative beauty features myself, but in lolita, it'll look like I could be normie unless you look for it.

It's on the other hand also kinda a thing with anything alternative. It's easy to set more steps once you started. People already look at you weird, so it doesn't matter much anymore if you go more extreme. Just like how many tattoo enthousiasts will keep wanting more tattoos after they got tattooed, even if they just wanted one small thing and nothing else before. It's not for everybody, some people like a few alternative beauty features but not a lot. But it's quite common that they do like multiple "weird" things simply because they are very open to things that others consider weird, so once the step to do it is set, it's easy to do the rest they want as well.

It's not just semantics, it's plain facts, and "fandom" is not a generic term either, it has specific connotations. Do you call people who are passionate about knitting "fans" of knitting?
