Tracon is coming up in a few weeks and Eternal Twilight is right after that (and evidently can't maintain its own thread), so might as well have a general Finnish thread up.

how's everyone's coords and cosplays coming along? excited for the afterparties? is there anything actually interesting in Tracon's schedule this year?

>> No.9980198

>>9980194
personally, I gave up on trying to get some big new cosplay/coord together for Tracon, will probably just throw together some dumb soldier larp for Saturday just because I have all the necessary elements for it lying around. one of my friends is planning to do a S.T.A.L.K.E.R. cosplay iirc so at least it'll make a little sense in context with that. doesn't help that I'm volunteering in a hands-on position so anything bigger costume wise would just get in the way.

as for Eternal Twilight, I'm still eternally salty that I'm missing out but I'm broke and intensely dislike visiting Hki, so I'll have to live with it.

>> No.9980222

I'm not really a fan of horror so there's hardly any interesting programs. Might skip sunday because of it.

>> No.9980448

I know chances are low but does anyone going to Hellocon know of any alternative hangouts planned for Sunday for those not going to the tea party?
A few friends and I decided to ditch the tea party since Mana won't be attending it and spend the day exploring Helsinki before the afterparty, but someone mentioned to me that there were talks of an "alternative tea party" floating around and it got me curious

I wouldn't go that far - I don't speak Finnish so most of the panels and shit are meaningless to me, but I still went both days last year and managed to find stuff to do. The less events you go to, the more time you can spend with rhythm games and tabletop and marketplace etc.
I've also found that the easiest way for me to keep myself entertained and interested in cons is to volunteer, since it gives me something to do for part of the event and usually comes with pretty decent perks (such as not having to pay)

I’ll spill the beans! From what I heard from a contestant, is that the NCC judges were completely incompetent or at least very inexperienced. The judges hardly took any look at the structure / technical side of the costume or asked about material choices. They didn’t ask anything about representation or contestant’s language skills or earlier experience from competitions. The contestant described that the whole judging situation seemed more like a formality than a real judging. Then again, why even bother to judge if you have decided the placements beforehand ;)
In no means is this an attack against Jesmo, but c’mon, even she wrote on her twitter that she isn’t happy with the costume.

This. It is my understanding that all the NCC contestants have decided to write a complaint about the judges (even the winners, but I can't confirm) to the organizers.

Some quotes I heard being recited (grain of salt, there is the risk of 'broken telephone')

"We already knew beforehand who were going to win, but then you came along and now we don't know where to put you" - contestant did not place in the end

"You have an incorrect amount of buttons on the dress"
"No, there is the correct amount, check the reference picture"
"Well I didn't count them" -judge trying to find something to shit on

"She had kind of crappy shoes, but hey, its Jesmo" - judge on Jesmo's eventual 2nd place to another contestant

>>9989362

Which part of Finland you are spending your time in? We don't have anything super cute but fantastic old buidlings and good places to get food from. Are you going to be in South, East, West or North? It would help with recommendations. In Helsinki I recommend Salu Torget for afternoon tea, Kämp for afternoon tea or brunch, The Ounce for tea and Kitty's Milkshake. Generally Finland has pretty nice tea houses and coffee salongs and one of the best specialities are waffle cafes. Unfortunately I don't know about smaller places in Helsinki. Also, I'm not totally sure but I would guess the ticket only covers commuter trains?

If you’re in the Helsinki area, then the tickets bought from HSL-app cover all forms of transportation in the Helsinki-area (bus/train/metro). You could also buy a physical card for 1-7 days of unlimited traveling in the Helsinki area, the price obviously depends on how many days you choose. It could be cheaper in the long run.
Kakkugalleria is a popular bakery/cafe in Helsinki, they have a couple of different locations. Other than that, I’d just recommend checking some Finnish lolita instagrams and see where they have spent their time to find some nice places.

I do think it's a good thing to take into account in judging though. Obviously the priority should be costume, and then skit, but in a situation where you're having a hard time choosing between two contestants it's a good dividing factor. Not necessarily a "how nice is this person" type of deal, but stuff like how well they speak other languages and if they have any prior experience travelling. International competitions can get really stressful, and sometimes there can be problems (especially with NCC I think there are complaints every year about the organization being a mess) so in those situations it's good to know the contestant can look after themselves.
Although the judging this year seems to have been an absolute mess, regardless of what anyone thinks of the contestants personally.

What are Finnish seagull’s opinions on the musicals that keep popping up in the con scene every few years? I personally don't care either way. Since they're their own program and often at a con I might not even go to, I don't think there's any harm in them. I do think they're a bit cringy, especially when you factor in that pretty much all of the people organizing it are adults, but if that's what makes them happy then might as well.
For reference though, I personally dislike skits in cosplay contests too because of the aforementioned possible cringe. I also can't stand people like Cidi who went to school for acting and now think they're brilliant at it, when in fact they're not. If they were, surely they'd have proper acting work instead of dressing up as a pokemon and jumping on small stage at a weeb convention. /salt

You have to congratulate them on the amount of work they put in their skits and CMV's, but seeing people compare other skits to them like "well, it's not Rintamasuunta" is pretty fucking rich considering how some of their work borderlines or goes beyond cringefest. Their CMVs have pretty decent cinematography but as I've understood from all the bts material they have other people doing the filming so they can act in front of the camera or just important on the set instead, yet all the glory goes to them in the end. Kinda like the Haikyuu mash up in last years Tracon was a colab but people still talk about it as a Rintsu skit.

This. Certain people keep banging their drum and acting like they're professionals. After all this hype their new cmv better be the greatest thing ever, but I have my doubts.
The technical aspect is probably very well done, considering there are some very talented people involved, but when it comes to the creative aspect, acting, script, directing, choreography etc, I excpect it will be complete crap.

Seriously, this so much. Especially when it comes to CMV's the quality is so dependant on the people behind the camera and editing, not just the cosplayers. And while their skits are good, they're just that: good. Definitely not the greates ever was, especially if you start comparing on an international level. The only thing they have going for them is their numbers, and a bunch of people willing to work in the background for them for almost zero recognition.
I have nothing against Rintsu or the people in it on a personal level, but I don't think they're worth the hype and praise people are giving them.

I'm too lazy to scroll back up on the phone but tracon feels in short: it was alright this year, there were minor annoyances in the setup of various rooms/areas (kirppis was weirdly routed), but as I get older I start liking the idea of an 18+ con more and more, not because of NSFW shit or anything but because there's so many embarrassing underages at Tracon. too bad I'm too lazy to travel anywhere else for a con.
also, while I got more deets on yaoi man's banning (apparently the reason for the ban was him being an utter dick to management) and have to sort of agree with it, it did feel a bit sad and quiet without him in sales.

I think the biggest reason for it is the fact he's working for/with SCT, hence why other cons don't want him there. Which I don't really mind, selling overpriced porn to underage attendees isn't really the most morally correct thing to do.

Because it’s in Närcon which sucks. It’s just normie bullshit.

>> No.9993433

Närcon sucks and the NCC finals have seemed fishy. And one of the problems is that we have to send 3 people per year to NCC. There aren't that many good or reasonable cosplayers in Finland, half of them don't want to participate because of the Närcon shitstorm. And we sill have to send 3 people. So some mediocre cosplayers get through the preliminaries and even simply bad ones like Cidi. Every year there is like one actually good and representation worthy cosplayer in the team and the other two are just shitty nobodies.

Then those shitty nobodies get to pic the next years team. Then it spirals down from there.

>> No.9993439

>>9993433
Don't forget finns think it's inappropriate to take part of international contests more than once so there's mostly bad ones left. I don't know why it's like that since other countries send same ones all the time without shitstorm.

>> No.9993449

>>9993178
The finals always have big organizing issues. 3 years ago there was a sizable drama concerning the finals as they fucked everything imaginable up and some of the contestants called them out for it, such as the sleeping hall being freezing and the contestants not having blankets or pillows, the lack of food, no dressing rooms or fixing/ironing tools, other contestants breaking the rules with copyrighted images, last-minute alterations, no information being told to the team... a lot more but I can't remember off the top of my head. There were even whispers that the contest was rigged that year because the judges weren't allowed to discuss the final results over as the Swedish TV channel (SVT) demanded to collect the individual points from them after each performance. They fixed most of the problems after that and the TV channel wasn't involved anymore, but it lost its reputation and never recovered.

Idk, I've heard the general consensus has gotten a bit more positive about the NCC during the last couple of years, ECC has more so gotten the shit end of the qualifier competitions these day arrangement wise. NCC at least has a better stage (if it doesn't rain), a competitor friendlier schedule, a judging that takes the skit into consideration as well as the craftsmanship and actual fucking skit rehearsals. What I've heard most of the time the ECC can give you like 5 minutes on the table-sized stage with no lighting and you have to listen to your skit on your own phone. Not that surprising when like 80% of the points come from craftsmanship, but hey, go to ECG instead if you don't want to bead and embroider until you get blind for a European cosplay final.
Not that Närcon doesn't have room to improve with arrangements and there has been confusing things like the Baltics suddenly being there as "guests", but at least they don't make you sleep on a deflating air bed anymore!

People mostly don't compete in the same qualifiers because of the whole "friend points" and "samat voittaa aina" -attitude Finns have. Presented above with the whole NCC shitstorm convo. If you get it even though you are competing in a competition you haven't qualified in and don't even qualify in the end, why bother trying something you actually have qualified in.
ECG hopefully is a new exception to the rule because of the solo and group system. If people have a hard time getting a person to pair with them for WCS I at least wouldn't mind a solo qualifying in group and the other way around two years in a row.

I don't thin NCC is da shit, it's one of the competitions where you don't have so much pressure to represent Finland because u don't do it alone.

Probably would get called fat but they were chubby at most, I don’t think Mana-Sama would have whales modeling for him. I didn’t particularly think many of them were gorgeous, but some had an odd sort of beauty to them. I was happy with the model choices. Some were so tall and others were very petite.
