Detroit.
because it isn't ten tons of cheese, and you don't have to eat it with a knife and fork. also, the crust is crisp and airy with crunchy bits like the corner bits of the brownie, as opposed to being a dense cornmeal pie crust.

not that i dislike chicago style, it's just something you need like at least 3 people to eat it and i don't know of anywhere that sells it by the slice.

detroit style is pretty close to a sicilian, or grandma pie. thick crust, crunchy on the outside, airy and soft on the inside. the OG detroit style is cheese first, toppings and sauce on top, but most chains do it like your average pizza.

heavier/more dough than your average round, but not remotely as heavy as a chicago deep dish.

the detroit coney doesn't have cheese on it. that's new york. don't forget that new york's dog is barely simmered in sewer water and served from a cart. might as well label new york utility pizza as the state's best cuisine.

SE michigan
detroit style deep dish pizza
coney dogs
shwarma
pasties (mostly a northern michigan thing)
lake perch

when you mention detroit, you have to include the surrounding neighborhoods, just because they're so easily driveable. Mabel Grey, for example, is one of the best restaurants in the area, albeit just outside of detroit. ferndale and dearborn also have some very good restaurants, with the latter obviously being more ethnic. detroit has far greater potential as a food city, if only for the fact of the abundance of real estate. with buildings being unoccupied, it's much easier for a new owner to do reconstruction without disturbing the surrounding area, which is next to impossible in cities like NYC and Chicago. also, the city has a large open farmer's market, with all the supporting businesses (including restaurants), which operates even in the dead of winter.

also, our pizza is probably better than yours.

i don't even remember the last time i ate pizza from a national chain, but papa johns was a massive letdown the last couple times.

detroit style deep dish is my pizza of choice. i daresay it is better than either new york or chicago style.
