Ask the farmer questions. IDK though I live next to (as in I can hear them moo from my house) a small semi "conventional" farm (as in they grain finish the cows) and they live most of their lives outside.


If you are worried about animal abuse avoid conventional poultry and look for pig farms that raise to your standards of ethics. Aside from PETA shock videos it seems like most people raise cows with respect. Which makes sense considering they are 2000+ lb animals that can kill you if they want to.

It's kind of like how some people abuse dogs. It's not going to stop anyone from getting a dog.

Hope you have a chest freezer so you can get a cow/pig share. My 1/4 cow has lasted me since August.

I have eaten insects before. They are not as good as terrestrial vertebrate animals. Those exoskeletons are unpleasant and we dont have the gizzard to break them down. Plus if you have a shellfish allergy, insects are out of the question.

You do realize that soy is grown for human consumption? We turn it into soybean oil and then by weight 85% if the crop is fed to livestock. That's what the meal and the residue is.

I mean, think about it. I saw a vid where a guy made sunflower oil, it took him 5 lbs of sunflowers to make 1/4 cup, or 60 grams of oil. I'm not great with math but seems like cows are eating byproducts of processed food and turning into a higher value product (milk and meat)

This is kind of how it goes for almost cash crops; You get the oil/ethanol out and the rest goes to livestock.

You shouldn't even be giving uncooked soybeans to animals to begin with, its a waste, the cooking involved in extracting oil does 2 jobs, makes your oil for humans, and makes the feed proteins more bioavailable for the animals to get nice and fat on.
In a vegan world we would have a shitload of waste.

Produce your own food to your own personal code of ethics. If you aren't a total sadist you will probably raise crops and livestock way better than any industrial farm ever could. Imagine what kind of cheese your own personal milk cow/goat/sheep could produce. You can easily share the milk with the calf/kid/lamb (which you would do anyways since you'll save money by not giving the baby formula) and the milk will be of higher quality since you won't be pushing the animal on a system purely based on production quantity.
