Watch some cooking shows, you'll pick things up after a while and internalize them.
Good Eats is good, but it's mostly following a recipe and there's less improvisation as there is in cooking competition shows. Both kinds of shows are good, but for different learning purposes (assuming the cooking competitions don't waste half the show on someone's sob story).

Cast iron (good for meats, pan pizza, etc), stainless steel, decent knives.
Post a pic of what you have if you want better suggestions, but it'll come down to what you want to cook really.

It seems like he has significantly relaxed his rules about unitaskers in the kitchen. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, Sous-Vide machines and the like open up a lot more interesting options culinary, but it closes some doors to chefs with more spartan kitchens. I'm excited but also a little wary about the direction of the show.
