You guys ever eat that government cheese?

Here's something I never understood - why did people inside (and even outside) of the US make fun of "government cheese"? Government cheese, as I recall, actually tasted quite good. The government prohibited the use of additives or fillers, which meant it was better than a lot of cheese being sold on the market. It wasn't a luxury product, but as far as food goes, it was solidly mid-range.

In the early 90’s my older brother named his band “Government Cheese.” He thought that they were so cool, virtually no one else did but this nerd girl who was like a 6/10. He ended up with an ordinary job as a salesman at an appliance store. He died in a car accident and n Florida when he was the passenger in a car that was traveling through some heavy fog crashed into the vehicle in front of it. I still have my brother’s old guitar, a cheap Japanese copy of a Stratocaster. I still think about his band Government Cheese and the dreams they had of stardom.
