what kinds of foodstuff & prep techniques are really easy, tasty, or economical?

for example: I've stopped buying bread since a few weeks back since I bake everything myself, and I've started growing some spices in my kitchen. I buy no powdered spices, as it's much tastier (and cheaper) to grind/crush things at home. I obviously don't buy bagged tea, and coffee beans are bought whole and ground.

the basic things I see suggested online a lot is: meal prep sundays, crock pots, rice cookers, buying large quantities of food, and food close to expiring. what else is good?
