>It depends on the mineral my dude
This is true...I'll concede that point--But I lived in the woods for a LOOOOOONG time,(and will again,) and I've had more than a few bouts with mildew.
That looks like mildew to me--But the TRUE test is always:

>Basil, sage, bay leaf, lemon balm, oregano, savory, rosemary, basil, 2 kinds of thyme, noble mint (Mentha arvensis x Mentha spicata), bergamot mint, lovage, chives, Chinese chives, southernwood, great burnet, lemon verbena, agastache, curry plant, wasabi
Imagine the smell. I only have spearmint, thyme, lemon balm, bay leaf, and chives.

Smell, tasting, and learning from the prior.
If you have a cat or a dog and have offered them a new toy or a treat, the first thing they will do with an unrecognized inanimate object is give it a little sniff. We inherently know that things smell delicious even if we can't see what's cooking - there is no reason to believe that animals (especially dogs, which are noses on legs) can't automatically do the same. This is probably subconscious.
If an animal thinks something smells good, they will lick it or nibble at it. If it tastes good, they'll eat it if the circumstance allows for eating. If it tastes bad, they won't. Learned behavior can influence this, but only to a degree.
The thing is that animals are CONSTANTLY being fooled, all the time. Sea turtles love to eat plastic bags because they love to eat jellyfish. A cat will poison itself very quickly by eating celery if its taste is masked by meat. Carnivorous flowers will release sweet or stinky smells to attract their prey (frogs, insects, small vertebrates). Even humans fall for these tricks, intentionally - we make perfume, and our kids take bites out of wax apples and chew on lead paint.
tl;dr they sniff
