Actually, we do have something really similar here in the States, that some Injuns came up with after they got stuck on a reservation - fry bread. Though it usually uses baking powder instead of yeast for the leavening. Works well with taco-style fixings on top. Its something you see at fairs a lot, though is uncommon elsewhere.
