I suspect that it's because you can never really properly clean the plastic part that houses the filter. Constant stream of boiling hot water and plastic parts don't mix too well.
I used to like cream or whole milk in my coffe too, but as I said that after using oat milk for a while, mixing regular milk with a hot beverage seems to make it taste like cheese and I find that disgusting now.
My french press is stainless steel and doesn't seem to catch any taste and I can actually clean it properly whenever I feel the need.
