this guy has pretty good advice except vermouth isn't shitty. Dry vermouth on ice is a wonderful pre-dinner drink. If you enjoy drinking it straight like me the bottle going bad becomes much less of an issue - it's pretty easy to go through 750ml in the month or so it takes to go off in glasses here and there before dinner.

Spot on about bitters. WRT liqueurs i'd recommend getting some absinthe as it's used as an ingredient in some really cool cocktails, and it can be fun to sip on as well. Maybe don't if you're not a fan of anise/black licorice.
Campari is also nice to have for summertime

Gin: get a london dry and a botanical like hendricks

Whiskey/bourbon: I'd go for a sipper and a mixer each of Irish whiskeys and bourbons, and one nice scotch.

try some nicer bourbons to find one you like. Blanton's is quite good if you can find it.

tequila: only buy stuff that says 100% de agave on the bottle. Casamigos is quite good - get a reposado at minimum. Get an anejo as well if you'd like something you can sip on rocks. Fortaleza is better but spendy and harder to find. Don Julio is also pretty good and v easy to find. Don't get patron it's overhyped.
