Yes, he could really cook. He grew up silver spoon with highly educated parents, attended ivy league education himself. He idolized musicians, bohemians, edgy new york punk rock area scene and did some stupid things, but a lot of people did the same in his circule at that time in history. If you went to clubs, you saw it everywhere, it was the era of miami vice before it was cracktime in the world.

He was an intellectual and was too smart to be in food service. His career was not launched as a chef, but as an author first. He just worked for someone kind who let him go on sabbatical until it lasted forever.

Bourdain was fantastic in person, says literally everyone who spent time with him. The people who hated him were mocked by him, typically in social media or within his show, vegans, hacks, rachel ray, conservatives, and the list goes on and on. But, in person he was pretty generously thoughtful to people he was showing on the show. Exception, he didn't like Iceland, like wtf funk happened to his brain in the dark of winter near the Arctic circle.
