It is plausible, I haven't seen much evidence either way that the southerners who drink, drink in a similar manner to northerners who drink, but as someone from the midwest whenever I meet southerners (and even most west coasties too for that matter) who move here they are actually quite surprised by how much casual drinking is tied to every sort of social event
