because my birthday is in september mum always made me a birthday apple pie rather than have a cake

Now that you mention it, my mother's apple pie.

Always made for Thanksgiving and Christmas, but most importantly it's what she always made for me on my birthday (which is today btw), instead of nasty birthday cake which I never liked.

No pie today, but this weekend I might try to make one, I have her recipe but have never attempted it myself.
