In elementary school, potato wedges were pretty plain 99% of the time.

One time though, it was seasoned and it made all the difference. It was probably just a lot of salt and pepper, but it blew my mind after being used to just normal plain potato wedges. I was volunteering with some other classmates as the person who'd put the food on the trays and nearly got in trouble for eating potato wedges during the shift.

My high school had these red cup looking things with two flaps that folded over the top that came with this kind of spicy popcorn chicken. I think the cups said munchies on them or something, can't fucking find out what they were but they were good. Toward the bottom they had really crispy breading bits with no chicken.

Not American but one of my favourites were black pudding and potato cakes with lingonberry jam that was served every now and then at every school I went to.

My favourite was cheese souffle sandwich with peanut sauce or chicken sate sandwich with peanut sauce. We dutch love our peanut sauce.

I went to elementary and middle school in a rural suburb, so our kitchen was staffed by retired old ladies. My aunt even worked there.
We had freshly cooked meals every day - none of the microwaved frozen foods people are posting here.
In middle school, we had a salad bar that was legit. I ate this on most days. I love simple chef salads.

Then I moved to an inner-city school. The "kitchen" staff were all immigrants with poor language skills who were microwaving shitty frozen foods.
The cafeteria always stunk of overcooked, spoiled broccoli - though I never saw them serve any.

We brought our own lunches to school and ate at our desks in Canada. It wasn't until I made an American friend that I realized that school lunches/lunch money/cafeterias weren't exclusive to movies and cartoons.

I only hated school lunch as nobody wanted me at their table.

The Democrats decided some people in DC knew what was best for every school in a continent spanning nation of a few hundred million people and created the Department of Education. The DOE proceeded to heap lots of regulations and requirements that weren't necessary and did nothing but flex federal power and create more bureaucracy.

This in turn caused schools to have to shift money towards meeting those retarded regulations and requirements, and the first things to suffer were lunches that went to shit. Additionally, a lot of schools made food from scratch in house, but new federal "health" regulations stopped that and required lunches come from "approved suppliers" who always had a definitely unrelated relationship with government bureaucrats.

Fast forward to the 90s/early 00s, people realize how shitty lunches have gotten and so clammer for the government to fix it. The same DOE that caused the problems now make MORE regulations and hire MORE bureaucrats to enforce them, resulting in less money to fix an issue already caused by lack of money, so schools are forced to partner with shitty mega corps that exist purely to suck government contracts to meet the regulations.

Hence you get the "nutritional value" of a meal coming from shitty $0.50 wheat buns and some fucking canned corn, all because that's to government regulations and union shops requiring purchase from overpriced "approved vendors" that's all schools can afford.

Now while the Democrats started this both political parties are to blame because there are so many jobs attached to this clusterfuck neither want to stop it and risk losing power due to taking some government employee's job.

This is also how we end up with bloated government that just gets in its own way.

They had such bomb salads and dont even get me started on the sandwich/wrap line. Processed turkey with potatoes and gravy was great
It made be look forward to thanksgiving break becaause we always had it on the day before break
Vegetables soup with grilled cheese was another good one
Also California vegetables were a GOAT side if we weren't having any of the above I'd trade my main for those veggies

Schools in Germany didn't serve lunch at all. But the school day also already ends 13:30, so no need. The children just brought their own food and than ate with the parents at home. In High School you are allowed to leave the school premises and get some food if the day is longer

Chicken patties were top tier. My favorite school lunch was mashed potatoes, gravy, roll, and chicken. Funny enough, the chicken was just a chicken patty like for the sandwiches.
We would also have snack wrap days and they were just the chicken patties cut in half and a tortilla.
Pizza was great too. Local grocery in my town sells school pizza you bake at home. Tastes just the same.

Worst lunch was easily anything fish.
